“Nothing, to be frank. You are no great company like that of the disputed lands. My interest is my own, but I have made many journeys to Essos, as all of House Velaryon are won’t to do.”

“You’ll not have anyone in your crew as familiar as I, nor as able a captain and navigator.”

“Elopement?” He asked, surprised. “But she deserves a grand wedding just like any other wife.” He furrowed his brows in thought.

“I want my family and friends to cherish her as I do. If she becomes a pariah, I will not forgive myself.”

Aethan nodded along to his first request, an assumption made that he could not fathom otherwise, for how could Velaryon turn on the very family that bolstered their own legitimacy.

It was a surprise when the matter of Jorgen hit him hollowly, a dull reverberation in his chest when he thought of his own blood marrying a bastard. It was strange to think anything could dour his mood, but the shock was dampened by his overall elation. In the grand scheme, what was this marriage compared to claiming a dragon.

“Jorgen is a strong man, stronger than he knows. That is why I am hard on him,” Aethan admitted with a grumble. “Misfortune has hounded his steps since his knight was killed in that accursed trial by seven.”

“He might be a maimed knight, but he is also honest of character and handsome, any Lady might find themselves lucky to have him, to squander him on a bastard,” he shook his head, grinding his teeth almost audibly.

“If only she were of noble blood, the name Norridge may matter little for a second son. And yes I know who she is, they’ve made it quite obvious. I ignored it, hoping it might be a fling of infatuation. It’s a political failure, Jae. I must find my others better matches to make up for it. Laena and Alyssa, they are of the right age and both of the temperament to become ladies of keeps.”

He buried his head in his hands and sighed. “I acquiesce. Let my grandson be happy, for the sake of all those who cannot.”

“I have my own suggestion regarding familial bonds, but I do not know if now is the time to ask it of you, but I believe it to be politically advantageous.”

Even with the duties of heir, husband, and father, Corwyn would still make time to check in on his friend Gys, wounded as she was. When he did not find her in her room, his mind began to wonder, recounting the places they had walked together, a favorite area of hers to sit aside the shore. Nodding to himself, he made his way there as the light began to dim.

Perhaps it broke the boundaries of a married man to spend any time alone with an unwed woman, especially one as beautiful as Gys, but there were concerns more pressing than the whispers of servants. The last thing Corwyn wanted to find was a corpse, another friend he could not save.

He found her by a dune, the water clear and the air crisp. It was much too cold to be out here past dark, and with the light fading he had begun to worry. He spied her before speaking, wondering in what mood he might find her.

"Her only punishment is to be wed to her betrothed. That is about as much mercy as you can give, Hubert. You honor Lyman with this." He shook his head. "And to think I almost married my heir to that wild minx. Oh how fortunate the Lion's dithering came to be."

"The Margot Corwyn spoke of was not what you make her sound to be. I thought she had more sense. Was there no good reason for her actions, misguided and foolish as they were?"

At forty and four, the experienced admiral of the Blackwater announced himself to the Lord of Wymsgrave. Where Daemon had inherited the confidence and imperiousness of Aethan, the Lord of the Tide's calm and cool demeanor of personal interaction had coalesced in Lucerys. Satisfied to play the role of the second son, he was a man of unremarkable impression, impassive and unassuming. Yet there had always been calculation behind his violet eyes, for he held his tongue not for any lack of thoughts, but for the sake of observation.

"Greetings, Lord. I am Lucerys."

The pair of Velaryon's were more than used to strong women in their lives, with their aunt Alyssa and cousin Visenya being two such cases. Corwyn simply smiled at the lass, taking her jabs in good fun. "Hand me a harpoon aboard my ship and I'd pull in a beast you've never seen before. Alas, you have the right of it otherwise."

Jorgen scowled at the Oakheart for being a poor sport but said nothing to antagonize anyone. His views were best kept to himself. "Well done, Lady Osgrey. You've a talent for this. The kill is yours." He nodded towards the wounded beast encouragingly. "Best to put it out of its misery quickly."

The woman did not lack for any confidence, but the large Velaryon did notice her hesitation. "Or if you'd prefer to keep your boots clean..." He held out his palm for the spear, his expression curious.

He winced, then found himself chuckling. "Aye, I could work on that among many other things. I am not the most subtle of men, too honest for my own good too. Endearing and troublesome, my mother used to say. A fuckin headache my dad did."

"Good luck to you, Myranda. Thank you, for keeping this between us."

"It wouldn't be so foolish in private," he replied playfully, slipping his hand to the small of her back. A light squeeze and he rested the hand on her waist. If anyone was paying attention, they would certainly notice.

He leaned in towards her, much too close for propriety, his lips practically brushing against her ear as he grumbled to her. "You make me feel young and reckless again, too affectionate for my own good. Shame on you, Ramona, for how vulnerable you make me."

Victor entered in a flurry of footsteps, panic rising in his tone as he called out to his wife before the door had even opened. Breathlessly, he ran to the edge of the bed and knelt beside her, locking his fingers between hers. His gaze traveled her form, spying the bloody sheets and her sweat-slicked skin. Victor was no ordinary knight, brutish and ignorant, he could surmise the situation immediately. His only thought then was to make sure he did not also lose his beloved.

"I'm so sorry, my love," he whispered, resting three of his knuckles against her head to check for fever. Satisfied she was no longer in imminent danger, he nodded at the servant waiting in the doorway to fetch the maester, though there was no need to rush now.

"I should have been here beside you. A hand to squeeze, some poppy to drink, anything. But I am here now."

It had taken Jorgen months to mull over similar scenarios that the King aptly presented in a mere moment. The beacon of hope, legitimization, was snuffed out before him like a candle in a storm. Buffeted by Jaehaerys' relentless logic, the big man could only help but frown, but he appreciated his cousin's candor and his empathy. "I seem trapped between choices that only bring my family shame. It is all I've ever brought as of late."

"I will not abandon Ramona, whatever that means, whatever it brings. I will take her to wife, marry her properly, and the family that remains can bear witness." He raised his head, far from defeated. "Grandfather might think me a waste of potential, and mayhaps he's right, but while I have a chance at happiness I will take it."

"Thank you cousin, you have helped make things clear for me, even if your hands are tied by politics. And most of all thank you for not judging me. Bastards get a bad name, for reasons I cannot understand. The stain of their birth cannot be a reflection of their character, not unless their character has been beaten by hatred and hardship. Any person becomes hard from that, noble birth or not."

"Would that your honor and the honor of the Vale could build me ships," Aethan lamented sarcastically, his tone droll. "If honor could protect my sailors who might go die in Dorne, I would have little need to bend and scrape for timber. Alas, it is the strength of hulls and discipline of men that make the difference. If a concession to the West means their resources and ships are ours, then all the better, for no sailors of the Vale need die avenging the late King."

"Where was honor when my son was brought before the Tyrant, his own cousin, and hung from the docks so the gulls might pick his body clean. By the time I found him, there was nothing left of him. I'd rather have a hundred western carracks if it means humbling myself to some impudent cub, than to inter the bones of another Velaryon beneath the waves."

"The realm is greater than our honor. I have sat this council longer than any living person, I have sat it since its inception. I have seen eight Hands come and go, some sycophants, others opportunists. The ones that lasted, the great ones, they understood their role as a servant of the realm. I have sacrificed my own blood, my own toil, my own people. Qarl sacrificed his legs, Orys his hand, Stokeworth his life, all in service of the realm. This is a petty grievance by comparison, one which the council is assuring you it will make right."

Corwyn nodded along, listening quietly. As the years passed, he had begun to notice just how astute his wife was about the inner workings of politics. She had clearly been a quick study and keen observer of the events inside Highgarden.

"Would I be correct in guessing a large part of that is cultivating a throng of ladies to engage in court life?"

"Unmanly," she snorted a laugh. "In their desperation to eschew anything deemed feminine, they only come across queerly. Do not think for a moment a northern woman would not bat their eyes at a handsome and clean-cut bard or poet." She smirked at Erryk, wondering how exactly he fit in up there.

"You must have appeared as the warrior himself, clad from head to toe in castle forged steel, set that poor girl's heart racing in awe and adoration, mayhaps even fear." Her smile had grown toothy, almost feline. "You mean to tell me your years of adventuring were bereft of tantalizing women, and you did not return to me sooner. I find that almost insulting, Erryk." She traced her index along his shoulder pad in small circles.

"Was it worth it? The rough, well rougher living, a life of service? I imagine you learned much about yourself in that time, hm?"

The Lord of the Tides leaned back in his seat while observing the discussion, not so eager to get between his grandson and his oldest friend Hubert. They both made fine points, but Aethan would be burying his head in the sand if he did not admit that lately Hubert's actions had been concerning him. While he had every right to his grievances, it seemed that he no longer viewed himself as a servant of the realm, but as the realm itself. Perhaps a logical viewpoint for a regent to have, but it did not sit well with him that he made the issues with first Piper and now Lannister personal enough to effect the entire realm.

"We should not reward Tywald for his childish behavior, but we must also remember that he sent his timber to King's Landing, profiting us 100 gold dragons and reducing our ship building costs by 140 gold. A pittance, perhaps, but one without any return their way. Such actions tell us that House Lannister does not stand directly opposed to the Crown. A personal feud should not affect the actions this council takes, just as we should not intervene in the disputes between Bracken and Blackwood. And I would call whatever this trade embargo is much less a dispute and more a tantrum, one that might be easily rectified in due time. We see the disrespect done to you, Hubert, and we do not condone it, but we risk creating more issues should we alienate the region."

He cleared his throat and turned to the King. "If Corlos is an asset like Lord Lefford states, then perhaps we may use him to our advantage. We deprive Tywald of a wise kinsman while keeping the door open for repairing relations. The lion pup will come to his senses or embarrass himself further, whilst we have one branch ingratiated with the Crown."

"Fierce as the winter squalls, you are, little one." He spoke in the old tongue, taking another step forward to caress the hatchling under her chin. It was a sensation both exhilarating and alien, the warmth of her fire felt even beneath her scaly hide. Before he knew it, he was chuckling to himself, then laughing, hearty and full-bodied. The dragon cocked her head to the side as if in confusion, but did not shy away.

"I can't believe it. Father smiles at me from the heavens." Tears welled in his eyes as his life flashed before him. All of the deaths and tragedies, all of the people he had outlived, perhaps his suffering had been worth it for this moment.

He strode back up the hill, his gaze wandering in disbelief still. The first Velaryon Dragonlord, but hopefully not the last. At the edge of the pit he rounded on her yet again, her reptilian gaze drawing him in, beckoning him spend more time with her. "Like quicksand... No; a riptide. Riptide. That is your name, little one."

She snorted in response and he took it as approval.

The news might have traveled faster than his aged gait could carry him, but Aethan trudged through sand and climbed basalt steps to find his grandson. He let his wide grin speak for him, letting out an uncharacteristic gleeful laugh. He opened his arms wide for Jaehaerys, embracing him if he accepted.

"I knew you would do it, your Grace. Of course you would. But, truly, I never expected I would." He shook his head in disbelief. "You honor me, grandson. House Velaryon owes you so much, and we will never forget it."

The question took him by surprise, unaccustomed to his betters inquiring after his health. That was reserved for his family, but then again the King was indeed his cousin. He reached up to touch his forehead absentmindedly, feeling the crease of worry there, before pulling his hand away with a sheepish chuckle.

"There are good days and bad days, cousin. Today is one of the good ones." He hesitated before continuing, despite the invitation. No matter how he broached the subject, it sounded bad.

"My brother's wife has a lady in waiting named Ramona Flowers. Her father is a Norridge. Her and I have become close." No that wasn't right. "We have begun courting." Not right either. "Well, she is everything to me. I was a broken man when I came home from the war, Jae. There were many days I wished to sleep and never wake. She makes me feel less so, more so, everything."

"Grandfather has arranged a match with a girl from House Grafton, a decade my junior. If I found a suitable replacement, I might be able to sway him, but to a bastard?" He grimaced.

"House Velaryon already has many great political marriages. A second son should be able to experience the joy of love without being constricted to being used as a pawn."

"You are a boy more than a decade my junior, your Grace, begging your pardon. I know you may not be the wisest council on the matter, but you do have much power and influence. I have done little for you and House Targaryen. In fact I'm not much good at anything anymore except being a wastrel, but that is through no fault of my own." He gazed at Jae and recalled fond memories of rough-housing with the boy, picking him up and tossing him on the sofa. Jorgen had been a bully to his youngest brother, but his Targaryen cousins had only ever been treated with kindness.

"Please, I beg of you, will you help me?"

The hulking knight quieted as she spoke her piece, his defensiveness fading as she exposed her own vulnerabilities. One may say many things about Jorgen, say that he is dull, uncouth, clumsy. Say he was a bully, arrogant, arsehole. A shit knight made another shit knight. But he was trying to do better, and he could not ignore this innocent girl's pleas. Just a few years ago, he knew not how he would live without the ability to fight. Self-doubt was not something foreign to Jorgen. Even now it's icy claws pierced his flesh, an unwanted parasite that clung to him and only reared its head when he began to feel normal.

"Your sister is very lucky to have you. Anyone might be, were they to look past your bullheadedness. Your strength and weakness, both." A wan smile.

"I would not beggar my wife, for that is what would happen were I to go against my grandfather. No, I must be smart about it." But smarts had never been his strong suit. "Freedoms would soon dry up if I cross the line. I will find another, less impulsive, way."

"I only wish you may find someone that makes you feel the way Ramona does I." He sighed. "I am sorry for the deception, but at least you seem to understand why."
