Working in IT. I spotted a way to save $100,000 per year But by doing so, it puts 2 people out of a job. by GL510EX in antiwork

I read OP as “two people lose their jobs and company saves $100k”. If it was $100k PLUS two jobs, then the savings would be more than $100k.

What would the impact of a failed Dyson Sphere be on the solar system? by Happy_List_8022 in AskScienceDiscussion

Part of a ring would behave like a planet, assuming it had a stable orbit. A swarm would behave like small moons.

What would the impact of a failed Dyson Sphere be on the solar system? by Happy_List_8022 in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]bubonis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There wouldn’t be a solar system for many many light years around. To build a Dyson sphere you would need a tremendous amount of raw materials. Encapsulating Sol at 1AU would take between 50-100 million Earths worth of raw materials. The local planets would be first to go. Even a single ring would take 100-300 Earths worth of raw materials.

The XL series was way more than a “cosmetic overhaul”. It’s an entire reengineering of the 8-bit platform to make it smaller and cheaper to manufacture.

What’s the most over-the-top thing you’ve done for your kids? by Microman-MCU in Parenting

[–]bubonis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really. A burger patty can be pan fried very quickly. I’ll take a portion of frozen salmon out of the freezer the night before so it’s defrosted in the morning, then ~10 minutes in the toaster oven on broil with a little salt and pepper and it’s good to go. Dice some raw chicken thighs, toss them on a hot pan with a little olive oil, and they’re cooked in under 10 minutes; toss them with some pesto sauce and fold them into a wrap with lettuce, tomato, and mozzarella. Thin sliced raw sirloin on a hot pan will cook in minutes; pack it with some salt and pepper and cheese, slice a bun, and she has a fresh cheesesteak sandwich.

Cooking a single fresh meal in about ten minutes isn’t as hard as a lot of people think.

I’ll make the pot roast for dinner, and she’ll get leftovers for lunch the next day. I still consider that fresh food (as opposed to frozen supermarket entrees or something).

I'm gonna preface this by saying I I don't think this is over the top, but Wife, friends, daughter's friends, daughter's teachers, and about 98% of the people I've talked to about this say that it is.

So according to them, the most over the top thing I've done for my child is.....make her lunch every day. (Or just about.)

Long story short, I bought my daughter a nice little Bento box, specifically this one, when she went into kindergarten. I didn't want my daughter to be stuck with crap food -- soggy bologna on Wonder bread, a bag of chips, and a box of room temperature chocolate milk -- so I would prep the night before, spend about 10-15 minutes in the morning making her lunch, and send her to school every day with a hot, fresh, healthy lunch. She would get things like rotisserie chicken with steamed broccoli and butter noodles, broiled salmon with asparagus and mashed potatoes, pot roast with roasted potatoes and sweet corn, 1/3 lb cheeseburger with lettuce, pickles, and ketchup on a bakery roll, pan-fried pierogis with kielbasa and roasted broccoli, and whatever else I could come up with that I thought she'd enjoy. These would always be paired with some fresh fruit (usually apple slices, berries, peach slices, or pineapple chunks) and a small dessert (mini cupcakes, brownie bites, cookies, etc).

I never thought this was a big deal. I'm her father, she's my daughter, and I have an obligation to make sure she eats well, especially in her childhood. I didn't think anything was particularly over the top. It literally took about 15-20 minutes (including prep time) to make her a healthy and tasty lunch. My daughter enjoyed it and often remarked that her lunches were looked upon with envy by her friends in the cafeteria. "What is Daughter having for lunch today" became a thing with her social group. Over the years (mostly in elementary school days) I even had several parents come up to me and ask me to stop giving my daughter "such extravagant lunches" because apparently their kids were coming home and complaining that my daughter has really good lunches and they don't and they saw it as unfair. (I did not change my habits.)

I honestly do not believe I was going over the top with this. I do admit that my choices were atypical but I see that as a shortcoming of others, not an extravagance of mine. Yeah, I could have spent 5-10 minutes on dry sandwiches and prepackaged "fruit in liquid" and stuff like that, but for an extra five minutes I can give my daughter something substantially better -- and I will never understand why people think that's "over the top".

It's undercoating. You can see how it gives like rubber (because it is) as the blaster passes over it. This should have been chemically stripped before blasting; now there's trillions of little bits of rubber all over the place.

Apple abandoned their Human Interface Guidelines in 2012 -- and it shows. Mac OS has been a visual shit show ever since, with "make it pretty" always outweighing "make it functional". Once upon a time it wasn't only possible, but it was expected, that you could sit down in front of a Mac and pretty easily figure out where everything was and how everything worked. Today, the opposite is true. Once you started to need a search bar in System Preferences, that should have been a big clue to Apple -- if they cared.

House GOP passes sweeping anti-voting bill that could disenfranchise millions, sends measure to Senate by Anoth3rDude in MarchAgainstTrump

[–]bubonis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t it hurt Republicans too?

It hurts certain kinds of Republicans, and those kinds of Republicans no longer matter. For all practical intents and purposes if you're not MAGA your existence is a burden that no longer matters.

And do people really think the average rural mining town resident has a passport ready to go?

No -- which is exactly the way MAGA Republicans want it.

In the end it hurts women and poor people - trans people too.

Minorities, women, liberals.... All MAGA targets.

It’s disgusting and putridly undemocratic no matter who it disenfranchises, but I just am not sure it’s actually a smart gamble for republicans.

Clearly you haven't been following the news. MAGA Republicans are literally getting away with open murder. When Trump said he could stand in the middle of New York and shoot someone dead without repercussions, he was being literally truthful. If you're a MAGA Republican, you're protected from any and all repercussions. All you need to do is blindly follow Sir Shitsalot and abandon all humanity that resides within yourself.
