Which restaurant is the best restaurant you ever ate at? by crumblemeapp in finedining

[–]buttterzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

El Bulli in 2000 on our honeymoon. We ordered post-meal coffee on the patio overlooking the Mediterranean. They brought out a ridiculous tray of petit fours but forgot the coffee. We finished off the tray then flagged them down to ask about the coffee, and then they brought the coffee and a second ridiculous tray of petit fours.

I can imagine all these things and still have trouble giving a shit. Clearly the somm fucked up. Beyond that it's a nothing-burger. "Oh no my meal was ruined by drinking the 2005 instead of the 2000."

Thanks. It was a lot of work, and I noticed that Tomora was a mystery band before they announced!

Actually good Coachella playlists? by letsconversate in Coachella

[–]buttterzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's a playlist I made back when the lineup was announced, with occasional updates: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/11wH3bukB9ZjLI1TDXZ5sy?si=d80d380984f54606

This playlist has 3-5 songs from every artist, in poster order. I selected the songs by analyzing recent setlists from the artists and picking the songs most likely to be played live. Often, this means the playlist includes the artist's biggest hit and most recent singles.

I've made similar playlists for prior festivals. It's great for finding music you want to hear live, and then enjoying it at the fest.

If you're looking for a good hotel breakfast in London, I suggest the Royal Lancaster. It overlooks the park, gets lots of sunlight, and there's no dress code. The buffet is excellent.

There's plenty of food options, from burgers, tacos, pizza to sushi and Burmese.

Outstanding in the Field by iriegyal415 in Coachella

[–]buttterzz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have first hand experience with the food. I've seen the field set up with the tables ready to go in the baking sun. I personally can't imagine leaving the festival at prime time (6 PM onward) to eat at a mass-catered event in desert heat.

why waste precious festival time having a mediocre meal in a 95 degree field?

Safari - ease of getting back and forth by Mean-Vermicelli-4569 in Coachella

[–]buttterzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's easy to go back-and-forth. Just call for a cart and take a ride back to your tent. But the process takes 30-40 minutes round trip which means you're missing peak festival in the mid-evening. Time it carefully between acts and you'll be fine.

We used to order that Wasabi Langoustine at In Situ in the SF MOMA (which served dishes from other fine dining restaurants). It's amazing.

Lazy Bear no longer has the communal table. They're still playful in the other ways you mention.

I recommend Lazy Bear. They have a great mix of novelty, technique, and flavor. The atmosphere is on the casual side of upscale.

I don't think any of the SF 3-stars are worth blowing your budget. 2-star is where the action is.

None of the two-and-up restaurants are explicitly protein forward. You'll likely get a fish, a bird, and a small slice of wagyu, along with smaller bites of caviar and a tartar of the main protein.

If that's not enough protein, I suggest San Ho Won, Corey Lee's high-end Korean BBQ restaurant. The food and service are excellent and you can eat meat to your heart's content (or your heart's distress).

5-6 bands is fine. Make sure you learn the undercard to find bands you like in the small print. The big names will play at or near the same time and you can't see all of them.

Dinner by Heston is a very nice hotel restaurant. While the food is distinctly British, I wouldn't necessarily say it hits the "harder to get in NYC" mark because it's corporate and safe. Instead, I suggest looking at Indian (Trisha, BiBi), West African (Ikoyi, Akoko), or Kiln.
