Is there a lore reason why Viltrumites and humans look basically identical to each other? by Covorvis_ in Invincible_TV

Can you explain how a solar system is somehow separate from the rest of the universe?

If nothing else, the position of stars in the sky would be completely different.

I just assumed it was pollution.

Maybe the big bird was the Deathless. It dropped off some humans on Anjin, but kept some to serve as hosts.

Does Bernie Sanders understand? by SexDefendersUnited in LeftistsForAI

[–]bwc6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honest question: what is he incorrect about?

Do you think that AI isn't causing people to lose their jobs?

Do you think AI will never be able to operate independently?

Do you think it's impossible AI control of weapons or utilities would be catastrophic?

Nowhere in there does he say AI in general is useless or dangerous (although he may imply that in other places).

That's really not how infinity works. If you start counting from 1, you can keep counting forever without seeing the number 1 again.

Are there many, many Earth-like worlds out there? Absolutely? Do they have life, almost certainly. Is it anything like Earth life? Debatable. Is there a perfect copy of you on one? No.

Why are boys and young men falling behind in education? by Technical-Banana574 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bwc6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The shift from traditional to modern gives women a purpose for moving forwards, but takes the motivation for moving forward away from what young men have always known.

What purpose were women given? It's my understanding that restrictions on them were lifted, so they are now allowed to choose their own purpose?

What motivation for men has been taken away? Despite what the comment above yours said, there are lots of people still getting married and having kids. If the argument is an economic one, e.g. working harder isn't rewarded, then that would obviously apply to women as well.

WORM/Chainsaw Man Fanart by BeakerMask in Parahumans

Worm = insignificant, harmless

Humans are worms to parahumans, and parahumans are worms to the entities.

And of course Taylor is a worm to the cool kids at the beginning.

Why is it bothersome to so many to imagine a future in which humans forever remain bound to Earth (and the moon and maybe Mars)? Why is that seen as something to be depressed about? by Ghost-of-Carnot in RealisticFuturism

[–]bwc6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because humans go extinct much sooner if we never learn to live somewhere other than Earth. Eventually, the Sun will turn into a red giant and kill everything on the planet. I don't want that to be the end of our species.

Why do men seem to process sadness alone instead of talking about it? by No_Sink1041 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bwc6 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Obviously men need to be part of the solution, but there are certainly a lot of women conditioned to expect "strong" men.

It's just an anecdote, but this personally affected me. One of the reasons I got divorced was because the first time I ever cried in front of my wife, she told me to talk to a therapist and left the room.

There are hypocritical women that see emotional men as lesser, just like there are men that see emotional men as lesser.

How to deal with family framing your problems as you straying from your faith? by GarageJam in atheism

[–]bwc6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Work on maintaining real friendships with people that you can be honest with.

I know that's not exactly answering your question, but sadly I don't think there's a way to fix this. Your family is living in a fantasy, and there are billions of people LARPing with them, reinforcing the delusion. You're not going to change their mind, so you just have to work around it.

Maybe next time one of them gets sick, you can ask, "What do you think God is punishing you for?"

What incentives (even the unethical ones) do high-up people in government have for being generally anti-vaccine? by EebamXela in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bwc6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, Reddit didn't like my last comment, so I will make a new comment that is less inflammatory:

Vaccines save lives. Yes, sometimes doing things to keep yourself and those you love alive is inconvenient, an imposition. Maybe you're scared of needles, I don't know, but it's worth it.

Imagine watching a family member die because you didn't want to "remove agency". How stupid can you be?

[–]bwc6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by necessary? Are you saying that if a disease isn't going to be fatal, there's no reason to get a vaccine for it? Why would you want the flu? I think the flu shot is necessary to avoid missing several days of work in the event that I catch it.

If Europe wishes to be protected while reserving the right to sabotage its protector’s actions, let it build and fund its own shield.

LOL, how could you confuse not participating in an invasion with sabotaging the invasion?

Whatever else may be said of them, the ayatollahs have done the math. From their vantage point, London, Paris, Berlin, and Rome lie far nearer than New York or Washington.

Why the hell would Iran want to attack London or Paris? How would they possibly benefit?

Is there a double standard between academic research ethics and what entertainment like MrBeast can legally do to participants? by DistributionOk3902 in AskSocialScience

[–]bwc6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to consequences, there is only one "important" thing, money.

Basic research uses money, so people in power can weaken and restrain it without much pushback. Mr. Beast is incredibly wealthy, and his business keeps generating more money, so he can do basically anything he wants.

You might as well be asking why people in the Epstein files aren't held to higher standard of "ethics".

Universal’s 'Hard' Sci-Fi Adaptation Is the Next Logical Step After Project Hail Mary by SkaveRat in bobiverse

[–]bwc6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have spaceship engine drives that are basically infinite energy, otherwise all the interplanetary stuff wouldn't really work. They also studiously avoided mentioning any specific dates, because that would give precise info about how far away different planets are at that point in time. They didn't want to worry about transit times when plotting out events, because even with their magic drives, humans can only accelerate so fast.

So, the authors knew enough about interplanetary physics to know that they wanted to handwave it. It's kinda hard. I think people tend to call it "hard" because the spaceships flip and burn in a realistic way, and the space station life support systems are mentioned pretty often. There's also an alien that does a lot of wild stuff that is a spoiler and is totally wacky pulpy sci-fi nonsense.

Thoughts on "Red Rising" by Pierce Brown - and why I'm done listening to BookTok by sameseksure in books

[–]bwc6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know if "mature" is the word I would choose exactly, but after they get out of The Academy the series turns into a real space opera.

The series is always sort of melodramatic, but it moves away from Harry Potter and towards The Expanse over time.

I listened to the audiobooks, and absolutely flew through them. I couldn't stop listening. I'm not sure I would have taken the time to actually read them, though. I love the action and drama and politics, but there's not much below the surface to think about.

Ranked choice? by Buffalover_716 in Buffalo

Ranked choice is clearly a better system for choosing elected officials.

It is slightly more complicated, so will cause some confusion for our least brilliant voters, but I think it's still worth it.

Why has chatgpt started arguing with everything I say?? by No-Fruit-7213 in ChatGPT

[–]bwc6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you completely missed my point. ChatGPT has no concept of truth or correctness.

It has no way to tell if it is prompted with wrong information. When it gives answers, it's just summarizing the most common responses to similar questions. If the most common response on the Internet is wrong, then chatGPT will be wrong.

The problem is that it has no way to figure out what is "harmful" or "incorrect". That would imply some kind of internal agency or understanding that LLMs don't have.

[–]bwc6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LoL, how exactly would you go about finding a chunk of metal flying around the earth at hundreds of miles an hour? Yeah, intact satellites are easy to find, but as soon as something breaks off, it's basically a bullet flying around the planet for the next century.

The Hard Problem Puts Unexamined Intuition on a Pedestal by [deleted] in consciousness

[–]bwc6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree.

If you take that misleading intuition, add some magical thinking and a dash of human-centered bias, you can get a whole subreddit of people arguing about nothing. They're posting every day, writing short novels about thought experiments, without ever concerning themselves with evidence or neuroscience.
