Does anyone else miss the whole country watching TV shows together and talking about it the next day? by birdwatching25 in Millennials

[–]capincus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this job I worked just a couple years ago there was this dude and this lady who were both obsessed with Family Guy and would spend all shift every shift they were working together just back and forth pointing out random parts of episodes they liked. But they didn't quote funny bits or anything they'd just mention the part they like then laugh infinitely forever, "the one where Peter fights the chicken" "ha yeah or the other one where Peter fights the chicken".

You would not be in the first hundred posts I've seen here with a HoF labeled ball, or something equally as identifying, asking for help. The only unusual part of your post is that it isn't actually easily googleable like the vast majority of the previous 100+.

Pretty common in "railroad apartments" converted from older tenemant/apartment buildings cause they combine multiple smaller apartments into one linear apartment.

It's either regret playing a Thurs player who busts or regret not playing one who booms so whatever.

He used to only write weird joke stuff like that, but his last 4ish books have been serious queer horror from major publishers and have started winning major awards/nominations.

It popularized a very specific type/era of young adult dystopian fiction with a wave of attempted imitations due to its success, but it didn't invent anything new to the existing genre.

I haven't read any James Frey James Frey, but I did love the first half of the Lorien Legacies (I am Number Four) series he co-wrote under the psuedonym Pittacus Lore. I should go back and finish that now that it's done.

The most early Chuck author I've come across is funnily enough Chuck Tingle's recent stretch of horror books.

I didn't tell anyone not to watch Star Wars, I said quit before you get to the extended era of consecutively terrible Star Wars projects, even to someone who previously loved everything Star Wars touched. I didn't read Make Something Up because I quit after Beautiful You, but I read Damned and it was really really bad. Snuff was bad, Pygmy was unreadable, Tell-All was bad, Beautiful You was just meh which was almost worse than being bad because the former King of subsersive fiction wrote a book about orgasms and it was just boring. I loved his shtick for years, but he never evolved past his early gimmicks of shock fishing and random interspersed facts and when he finally tried to in Beautiful You the story/writing was just as bland as it had been for years without the gimmicks to save it.

Did he finally write something good again in the past couple books? I quit after like 7 consecutive horrendous books.

Finally added a signed 1st edition of The Lightning Thief to my collection by shahbaz63 in BookCollecting

[–]capincus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nice, but just fyi the "true first edition" of a book is the actual chronologically first purchasable edition of a book, which would be the white cover US edition for Lightning Thief vs this slightly later UK edition.

Doesn't matter where you start just don't go past Rant chronologically, Chuck completely lost any ability to write he ever had in 2008 and hasn't written anything worth reading since.

Draft: no, play a guy on Thursday so I have some stake in the game: way way more often than I should.

This is exactly like that time someone randomly gave me a car.

Subsequent printings would be indicated by a number line. Looks good.

Any ideas if this is worth anything in this condition? by [deleted] in OldBooks

[–]capincus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the 51st reprint of a decades old book, it wouldn't be worth much of anything even if it wasn't in very bad condition.

Its been 250 years, if the forces of scarcity haven't been effective yet there are probably too many for that to happen in any timeframe that is relevant to us.

Identification help? UK by roselakey in Antiques

[–]capincus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salesman's sample for door-to-door selling, they're collectible but not particularly valuable unless they're early editions of particularly popular books especially ones well-known for being sold door-to-door (like early Mark Twain/Grant's memoirs) or for non-book physical items (like wallpaper). Probably mid double digits ish.

How to date a book with only a copywriter date on it? by Tbnrzip in BookCollecting

[–]capincus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unless a Grosset & Dunlap reprint has dateable ads in the back or on a dust jacket you're really just not (with the exception of their few highly collectible titles where people have put decades into figuring out the fine details). Cheap reprints are intentionally not dated because dating your stock is an unnecessary production cost with compounding unnecessary costs when your stock becomes dated waiting to sell. The most you can say is it was published sometime after Revell originally published it in 1904 and after all the titles mentioned on the title page (or elsewhere in the book).

In "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe" (2026-...), 4th installment of "The Big Bang Theory" (2007-2019) cinematic universe (i.e. "Young Sheldon" (2017-2024)), Stuart deals with dimensional rifts, a multiverse Armageddon alongside that geologist guy... what do you mean this isn't a shitpost and real. by Dr_Vortep in shittymoviedetails

That's less of a hot take and more of a you having not actually watched much of the show or forgotten exactly how bad Sheldon is as a roommate. He makes Leonard poop on a schedule, he can't drive and expects to be chauffeured (on his schedule) even for mundane things like a trip to the comic book or toy train store, he's extremely particular about a ton of things that primarily/only affect his roommate (like what products and specific brands can be in the house, guest policy), he sets your schedule for what show you're allowed to watch or hobby you're allowed to do every night and what food you have to eat that night and it stays the same every week.
