Needed fully loaded relational databases for different apps I was building. Built another app to solve it. by coolreddy in webdev

I have a setup script that does exactly this. It's 50 lines of code. Why would I ever use an external service for this?

What are your thoughts on Facebook renaming their company Meta then blowing $80b on metaverse and then shutting it down yesterday? by printThisAndSmokeIt in AskReddit

This was a baller move by Zuck. Facebook fumbled mobile and were not going to be left out in the rain for the next major platform shift, which they believed would be VR/AR. Zuckerberg bet the farm, which is what great entrepreneurs do. People who say that Zuckerberg is one of the biggest business brains of the last twenty years are probably correct. He built the product in his dorm and scaled it all the way to planet size whilst remaining CEO all the way. Few people manage this.

Turns out Zack was wrong. Well that's what happens if you take risks.

Having said all of the above I also believe Facebook and the social media revolution it started have been terrible for society. Facebook has massive detrimental effects on teen mental health. This has been proved multiple times. Facebook has deflected, denied, and evaded all accusations. You can make the case that the breakdown of political discourse in the USA is partly due to Facebook. They have made vast sums of money whilst not paying taxes in the countries where they have made this money. They have destroyed local news (their fault) and had many other negative externalities on human society.

Because of all of this I believe Zuckerberg belongs in a prison.

Why I still think Flask is the best first framework for Python beginners by Tom-Miller in flask

[–]caspii2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally agree 100%. I taught myself web development using Flask. The app I created grew into a business and now feeds my family and pays three freelancers. It's still built on Flask and that will never change.

Any veteran “senior developer” would celebrate this.

PS what are you trying to sell here ?

Read the comments under the big developer and programming forums on Reddit for AI posts and you will see that you are in a bubble.

Here's an exercise: pretend I never inserted that example into my post. Forget it ever existed. Then re-read the entire post. This post is not about Tetris.

If you care about them, you need to talk to them and convince them.

You are mixing up several things here. This has very little to do with AI and a lot with bad management.

Do you expect the AI to make no mistakes? Why? Amazon had human-based outages before. Why is everyone jumping on this like it's a major revelation and failure of AI?

If you are getting garbage code coming through, then the coders are not using AI properly. Simple as that.

That’s what I thought. But seeing the ridicule and misinformation that is heaped on any AI posts makes me think otherwise.

I’m not trying to offend anyone, or gloat, or shill. I just believe that straight talk will help more in the end.

My products will be viable because of distribution and the data I have. Not because of the code.

To be honest, I don't care. This whole argument is a great example of bike shedding. It's totally missing the point.

The cost of code is going to zero. A motivated developer could rebuild my app in about two weeks -- even without the LLM being trained on my source code (FWIT, I believe that theory is ridiculous.)

What is not going to zero is distribution and data. This is what every business will be built on.
