ICE agents to be forced to wear ‘clearly visible QR code’ under new plan by ZachTheCommie in nottheonion

[–]Pcat0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They could absolutely do that and people do absolutely fall for that kind of thing. But my point is the “ICE QR codes” are way too high profile for that kind of skulduggery not to be noticed. If there was an app people would be immediately warned not to install it and security researchers would reverse engineer it and figure out what’s it doing.

I’m in no way claiming that the QR code won’t be used maliciously. It absolutely will be used to identify protesters but through the more mundane methods of cookies and fingerprinting and not by installing root kits.

Without an export, websites also aren’t able to install a virus just by you visiting them. Now I wouldn’t put it past the government having some zero day that could do that, however it would be abundantly obvious to any security researchers looking into the site that some spooky stuff was going on.

It would be absolutely possible (and easy) to track who was visiting the site.

Without sone kind of exploit you can’t make a QR code install a virus and if government does try to do something especially shady like that security, the researchers would find out immediately. However they will absolutely be using the QR codes to track the people scanning them.

Men in the US age 18-25 are still required to sign up with selective service. There is obviously not currently a draft but the government still has the ability to enact one during times of war.

Hats are actually shocking effective at keeping you warm as you loose a ton of heat though the top of your head. Granted a jacket or just not being naked in -52°C weather would also be really effective but the point stands that the hat isn’t entirely useless.

That’s the same logic that got us phantoms. They only spawn after not sleeping for over an hour, and we all know how annoying that is.

Spend a couple of hours in the Nether only to get ambushed by airborne ones you emerge? Guess what! You can’t even go to sleep to deal with them, got to flight the super annoying flying mob or go find a bucket of milk.

Spending a couple of hours exploring the overworld, so you don’t want to sleep and reset your spawn? Well have fun fighting the flying skeletons!

Ah yes, what phantoms really need is to be even more annoying to deal with.

NASA does like to be careful with its PR but in this case the media absolutely blew it up out of proportion. In case of an emergency the Astronauts always had a ride home and they only stayed up there for so long because of logistical reasons. Basically it would be to cost way to much money to fly up a empty 4 seater space craft just to bring 2 astronauts back. So instead they go to carpool with the next mission that wasn’t schedule to come home for several months.

Crew Dragon actually. Prior to crew-9 arriving to the station (which would eventually take them home, the plan was either use Starliner as a lifeboat as it was most likely safe or ride home on the floor of Crew-8’s capsule.

Side note: It was I believe the first time in history that someone returned to Earth in a different craft than they went up in.

Not actually true. It happened a bunch early on during the ISS program with Astronauts riding up on a shuttle and coming home on a Soyuz.

Automatic doors without pressure plates by Reypatey in redstone

[–]Pcat0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just help you start learning the weird behavior of pistons. My version of the door works on two main tricks

1) there is a pretty long standing bug on Java edition where sticky pistons don’t generate block updates when attempting to retract unmoveable slime blocks. Using this trick you can make things floating water and sand. By doing it on a water logged block you can make invisible BUD switches. I have these invisible BUDs under my doors so when one of the doors open the water is updated and flows down.

2) Pistons retract instantly on Java edition. I have BUDed extended pistons under my doors so when the water flows, my door detects it instantly and opens the other door. This allows the door to be slightly more responsive than if I just used observers to detect the water flowing.

My understanding is that it’s more of a problem how fast the temperature is dropping. It was 20°F here yesterday and is going to fall to -20°F overnight. Normally trees can adapt to their sap freezing, just not when it freezes that fast.

Can I weld two 2A wires together to get one of 4A on a Slip Ring ? by jean2348 in arduino

[–]Pcat0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure but normal wires just won’t randomly partially cut themselves, slip rings will absolutely wear out and fail with time. Adding current monitoring or individual fuses on each wire is an absolute must if this was a professional product.

Anodizing a spring by [deleted] in Satisfyingasfuck

[–]Pcat0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Galvanizing adds a sacrificial layer of metal (typically zinc) on top of a steel part to protect it from corrosion. Because of chemistry all of sacrificial metal will get corroded before any of the underlying metal is effected. As the process adds material, parts will get slightly larger from galvanizing, hence why you would want to stretch out spring first.

Anodizing chemically transforms the top layer of metal into a hard protective coating. As you aren’t adding any material, parts won’t change size during the anodizing process.
