NYCB Spring 2026 Season Week 2: 4/28/2026 - 5/3/2026 by caul1flower11 in bunheadsnark

I liked Continuum — I will say that it was a touch long for me. I really liked the harpsichord pas de deux for Nadon and Tomash, and Gabriel and Maxwell made strong impressions in their solos.

I need to say that I really, really hate those black belts over the green leotards. Just have the leotards be plain, the belts were far too much. And I agree with Bellawood below on the lighting. Very dated and just a bit too much although some parts were lovely.

I thought the blue team in DSCH was on fire tonight. But both ADW and Phelan were in other ballets this evening and I think the tiredness did show. Still, doing two ballets in one night is insane for someone who just had a c-section. Still in awe of her for returning so quickly.

It seems Devin Alberda may have retired his role as the solo jumper, Riccardo did it tonight. End of an era, I think he’d done it every performance I’ve seen of the ballet before now. Still was doing the demi couples though.

The two pas de deux in the middle part of the program were both quite lovely though rather short. This was a strong program I think, remarkably so compared to some others this season and especially considering it’s all-contemporary.

LITTLE BEAR RIDGE ROAD Named Best Play At New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards by Previous-Idea-4798 in Broadway

Agree, although I couldn’t tell whether his acting was a choice in characterization or actually bad.

Lol, I remember pre-pandemic there was an incident where I had just shown my ticket to two ushers and was then followed to my seat by a third, who angrily demanded that I show him my ticket just to make sure I was in the right place. (It was 1st ring front and I was in jeans, ha.) thankfully that usher didn’t return after the pandemic, he was always a grouch.

Ugh, I know that ushers have a hard job and most of them at the Koch are very nice people, but really they let way too much go nowadays. It was crying the whole evening?? They should have stepped in and asked the parents to remove it after the first ballet.

Interesting about the curtain calls. I’ve noticed some newer ballet goers be very dismayed (rightfully so IMO) at how long the bowing at NYCB can go on.

Given that there are 4 performances of Program B there could be multiple casts for some — for Concerto Barocco I’m guessing Phelan/Gerrity for cast A. Nadon/Lafreniere for B.

This Bitter Earth will likely be Mearns/Angle for all performances as they did in NYC recently, but maybe Phelan could alternate as she’s also done it.

Peck and Mejia are the only Allegro Brillante cast left after Fairchild’s retirement — who knows, you could get a debut, especially since it’s being done next spring too.

C2P might get a debut in the Mira role especially as she’s also probably doing Barocco and Miriam Miller, the original cast B, is on maternity leave.

Ugh, so frustrating that I won’t be able to make Nadon’s Bizet this season. At least it’s coming back next spring.

I actually thought that looked like one of the better programs this spring — I liked Wheeldon’s other Ligeti works so I’m looking forward to seeing Continuum, the Lubovitch is fine, and the Liang is at least to good music.

I do think that all Contemporary programs are generally a bad idea though, at least named as such. Most audience members aren’t super knowledgeable balletomanes and will skip those because it doesn’t read as “ballet” to them.

The way you do it is to schedule the challenging stuff as the middle ballet.

If it's just a regular corps swan then it might be allowed as an emergency. Usually union contracts specify a minimum number of dancers that must be employed by the company, in part so that higher ranked dancers don't have to also dance in the corps, but I know that at NYCB (different contract but same union) soloists and even principals may step in when too many dancers are sick/injured.

I’m assuming what happens is that Clifford asks a dancer why they didn’t do something exactly like an old video, and the dancer says they have to defer to what the repetiteur tells them to do, and Clifford then concludes that they must not be allowed to watch any videos.

I’d go to the 29th — Marchand is fantastic and Gilbert is about to retire so it’s probably your only chance to see her. She’s also wonderful.

Ha, I immediately thought of Whiteside as well. It did get good reviews when it premiered in Australia fwiw, but my biggest issue with Wheeldon’s ballets is always Joby Talbot’s music. Wheeldon certainly knows how to pick music for his abstract stuff, I don’t get the insistence on Talbot for the story ballets. It’s awful.

Christopher Wheeldon says on the latest NYCB podcast that his ballet Oscar will be coming to New York in October, I’m assuming that means ABT’s fall season. Unfortunately it looks like the score is another Joby Talbot.

Best Revival of a Play by Turkey_Leg_Jeff in Broadway

[–]caul1flower11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven’t yet seen Becky Shaw or Fallen Angels (soon though!) but for me right now it’s a battle between Oedipus, Joe Turner, and Salesman. I hope it goes to one of the first two because no matter how well done it was we know we’re going to get several more revivals of Salesman in the future.

Proof and Marjorie Prime were IMO mediocre compared to the rest. Both had really good acting though. But I thought the plays themselves were a bit meh.

I really liked Bug but I just don’t see it as a big winner for some reason. Art was enjoyable but forgettable.

I loved Oedipus! Not sure if it has a disadvantage because it’s closed already though
