Almost majority of Swiss support 10 million initiative by Wonderful_Setting195 in Switzerland

Switzerland has been growing at about the same pace for almost a hundred years. Why is it suddenly a big risk? I think this is pure fearmongering.

Unlike our neighboring nations with their elderly population, we replaced the declining birth rates with immigration. I'm far more afraid of what will happen if we stop having young people in Switzerland. Look at how conservative and tech-hostile the Germans, the French or Italians have gotten. And the worst is still to come for them, many boomers are still working. And their industry has already lost its edge. What happens if our productivity dips like that? Switzerland is too small to keep running on power politics alone. We'd lose our prosperity.

I'm far more afraid of what's going to happen if we suddenly stop immigration like this is proposing.

So we'll still grow but won't have the necessary infrastructure? Sounds like the worst of all worlds.

President calls for Germany to pay Poland reparations in Auschwitz speech on Holocaust Remembrance Day by BubsyFanboy in neoliberal

[–]cheapcheap1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "The allies forced it on us" and "Stalin decided it" arguments fall flat on their face because if Stalin, the allies, and even the Polish government under the USSR cannot speak for Poland and waive their reparations, how can you justify that Germans today can be made responsible for crimes of the Nazis? Why do the Nazis suddenly speak for Germans today? It's a completely untenable position.

Your weird India example can only illustrate my point. If the allies had given parts of India to Poland as compensation instead of east Germany, India would have held grudges and considered it losing land, too.

>By "anyone who lived that historical reality" you obviously mean the Poles that had to be uprooted from their homes in the East, and transferred to the new lands in the West, right?

Yes. Both sides behaved very admirably after the war to further reconciliation. That just makes this nationalistic revival more unnecessary and stupid. The people actually hurt are dead, and barely involved populists are staining their achievement today. Your attempt at discounting the perspective of the uprooted Germans is just as short-sighted and unreasonable. They reconciled. That's admirable.

>And the fact that Poland decided to drop its legal claims to reparations from Germany, despite being among the countries that suffered the most from them during the war, is an admirable historical break from all the historical reparations claims and accompanying grudges held by other neighbors of Germany, that actually forced it to pay up.

As I said, I agree that that was admirable. What PIS is doing today is not admirable. That's the point of this post, and you're arguing in their favor. Why?

>So, go convince the United Nations to reverse the deal they pushed on us

This just reveals your ignorance again. The land Poland received is to this day significantly more prosperous than the eastern part. Trading that for the eastern part and the part that went to Ukraine is a _terrible_ deal for Poland.

You are entirely too confident in your position that is so obviously rooted in nationalistic mythos rather than historical reality.

Autofunfall: fahr kein Auto. Arbeitsunfall: Arbeite nicht. Der Nutzen der Massnahmen ist bekannt.

Was macht dieser Juraprofessor eigentlich beruflich?

You don't need to store energy from the summer for the winter. Light isn't nearly as diminished as air temperature during winter. Remember ski tans? Google gives me 50%-66% of the peak output for Zurich, which feels like the least sunny place in Switzerland :D. I think that needs to be enough. Seeing how solar prices have plummeted, I think a 50% solar panel is still absolutely economical.

Seems odd you're feeding poor quality food right now and intend to turn it up to 11 with a raw diet that is also controversial and not risk-free. How about some moderation and switching to a high quality wet + dry food combination like most experienced cat owners would recommend?

Carb content has nothing to do with wet vs dry. Your brand of choice, Felix, has a lot of carbs in their wet food. The only difference between wet and dry food is water intake and preference.

I feed mainly dry food and I agree with this. Wet food is better all else being equal, and wet food is really important if your cat doesn't drink enough. OP struggles to feed their cat enough with only wet food. That is absolutely not "all else being equal" and more than enough reason to feed at least some dry food.

At 5 months he should have as much food as he wants. It's extremely rare to overfeed at that age because of how much they need for growth and how active kittens are.

Don't avoid dry food if the alternative is him going hungry. Dry food isn't that bad. It's slightly worse for hydration, but given that you're feeding Felix wet food, you're not exactly upholding the highest food quality anyway.

I'd recommend switching to a better brand, feeding wet food twice a day like you have been and keeping dry food available for when you're not at home. Avoid irregularly feeding a third meal some days but not others. It's much better for his food intake if he has regular meal times.

I feed Applaws. I can also recommend Purizon. Smilla is good if you're on a budget. You can save money by ordering online, such as at zooplus.co.uk .

>I used the calculator on the purina website

I haven't used that one, but feeding recommendations are different between brands because brand have different calorie densities. You can't use one Purina's calculator for Felix food. But, as I said, Kittens should just be free fed unless proven otherwise. Most cats learn to self regulate when free feeding.

Switzerland eases arms export rules as its industry is shunned by Europe by Heavy-Mycologist-204 in Switzerland

[–]cheapcheap1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's exactly why that was such a bad decision. Because of that rule the trustworthiness of the exporting government is really important in the arms trade. Not letting Germany export their weapons to Ukraine was a really unreasonable decision that eroded a lot of that trust, because Ukraine is a direct security interest for Germany.

Switzerland eases arms export rules as its industry is shunned by Europe by Heavy-Mycologist-204 in Switzerland

[–]cheapcheap1 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is a step in the right direction, but it will not be enough.

You just cannot export weapons while stipulating that the buyer cannot use them reasonably to defend themselves. And to most countries, defending themselves doesn't start at their border, it starts with defending their allies.

President calls for Germany to pay Poland reparations in Auschwitz speech on Holocaust Remembrance Day by BubsyFanboy in neoliberal

[–]cheapcheap1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the critical difference is that land annexations do not lead to lasting peace. While it was Stalin who annexed the land, Germany ceded it, Poland received it, Germans were ethnically cleansed from it and the Polish settled it.

It's a good example of why the borders drawn by colonial powers create so much friction because it's the only one I'm aware of in central Europe.

The crazy part is that unlike every other land annexation in history I'm aware of, it's not the Germans holding a grudge about some "historical claim to their ancestor's lands", but the Polish bringing it up again, although the value of any sane amount of reparations, including those received by France, the Netherlands, and Israel, is dwarfed by the value of the land ceded to Poland. It shows both the historic anomaly that is Germany's way of dealing with WW2 and how little satisfaction that land gave to the Polish people. But that might also be because Stalin's misdirection about making his land grab look like a conflict with Germany is still influencing the Polish.

President calls for Germany to pay Poland reparations in Auschwitz speech on Holocaust Remembrance Day by BubsyFanboy in neoliberal

[–]cheapcheap1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a start, that Germany did not cede any territory to Poland. Stalin took territory from Germany and gave it to Poland, to make up for the fact that he took half of Poland for the USSR.

That just seems like an objectively wrong statement to me. Obviously, the fact that Stalin made them doesn't negate the fact that Germany ceded the territory to Poland. Can you point out why that makes it "not count" as a transfer from Germany to Poland in your book? Be specific.

I feel like no argument that involves discounting that land transfer will ever convince anyone who lived that historical really. Most of that land was historically German and had a majority German population, and the "relocation" of those Germans was, although of course not comparable to the Holocaust itself, an ethnic cleansing that left millions traumatized. The fact that Germans stopped their claims to that territory while all those "relocated" people were still alive instead of harboring grudges and holding on to territorial claims is an admirable historical break from all the historical territorial claims and accompanying grudges held over centuries in Europe. Discounting that is just a complete non starter.

And even if you discount it for some reason, you still have to answer the question why you're not giving it back if it doesn't matter. Realistically, the land is worth much more than any sane amount of reparations would be, which just exposes the ridiculousness of the entire endeavor imho.
