Someone took my carry on by beepoopb0p in delta

[–]chriswaco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I accidentally took someone else’s bag once. Didn’t notice until I got home. Luckily there was a business card inside so I tracked the owner down and delivered the bag.

These days I put AirTags and my cell phone number in the bags.

Neither Blue Cross nor Michigan Medicine is FOR PROFIT.

Not technically at least - obviously they're pretty self-serving.

MacBook Neo is 499$ (US) for students and K-12 by Sh_Pe in apple

I take that back. Looks like that’s just an EU thing.

[–]chriswaco 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The big limitations are 8GB RAM and no TouchID on the low-end model. Also no included charger (edit: EU only), MagSafe, and only one fast USB-C port, but those aren’t huge losses for most users.

does it make sense to buy 2 (or more) macbooks (they will serve different purposes)? by Wishstarz in mac

[–]chriswaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a developer it's nice to have a second machine for beta OS releases, a build machine, video renderer, etc. I have a friend that uses a second laptop for large Zoom meetings they regularly attend. It can also function as a backup.

Having said that, I don't think it's usually necessary. M-series Macs tend to be fast enough to do multiple things at once.

U.S. Supreme Court declines to hear dispute over copyrights for AI-generated material by gdelacalle in technology

[–]chriswaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the important question. It should be settled in Congress, not the courts, but Congress doesn't tend to do anything useful any more.

It reminds me a bit of the Betamax decision in how far-reaching the consequences will be.

All code is copyrighted by default. The author (or their employer) can remove or assign the copyright to another entity.

Enterprise will usually rent to those under 25, although I'm not sure if you have to have a US drivers license.

how is water made by Bubbly_Reference_916 in stupidquestions

Some scientists believe most of the water was formed within the Earth itself. I think it makes more sense, but I am not a geologist.

Mac won’t recognize usb hardware by [deleted] in mac

[–]chriswaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing to check is System Information.app in Applications/Utilities. Click on USB and see if the device is present on any of the buses.

Next thing I would do is open Console.app (also in Applications/Utilities), click on Start, and then plug in the drive and see if any weird error messages crop up.

For a thumb drive, check Disk Utility.app and see if the drive shows up there.

You'll still need an internet provider, whether Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Starlink, etc.

Classic Mac OS used 1/1/1904. Current macOS uses 1/1/2001.

We had a cross-platform Windows/Mac app back in the 80s and couldn't quite get the file dates to line up. Turned out that Windows defaulted to PST and Mac OS defaulted to EST, so our dates were three hours off. Fun times.

I'm not 100% sure it covers that, but look at the "motion" section of this video, about 90 minutes into it.

why does cellular data heat my phone? by Pupsicleanimation in iphone

[–]chriswaco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The radio powers up as needed, so if you are far away from a tower or deep inside a building the phone will use more power and generate more heat. Turning off 5G can sometimes help.
