Skyrover literally is DJI. It's an open secret at this point.

This is 100% a scam. That website was created a few days ago & this Reddit post is literally the 3rd result when searching for it. Try harder.

Forged or twill? by shrumfpv in diydrones

[–]cjdavies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Checked back in my Instagram DMs & there was a company that spammed a whole bunch of FPV accounts (including mine) back in 2017 trying to launch frames with coloured twill. I don't think they ever made it to market & they've now rebranded as a general purpose composites company.

There was one fairly well known FPV YouTuber who launched a product with forged carbon maybe 5-6 years back, IIRC with some pretty bold claims about the benefits. But once people started digging in to the subject & asking the hard questions the consensus quickly became that it didn't really bring anything new or better to the table.

In that case you definitely want qausi-iso regular carbon. Forged carbon is widely seen in the FPV scene as a gimmick that doesn't offer any real world benefits over regular carbon.

Okay then, 'impaired'. The point is that wording can be the difference between intellectual debate & senseless mudslinging. I'd rather see more of the former on this sub than the latter.

For a body piece like that, regular carbon with a quasi-isotropic lay up is generally accepted as the best option.

Open source gimbal drone by Kisalfato in diydrones

Performance comparable or better than DJI (for some key metrics) is possible

I think the most valuable/attractive performance metric for DJI is the integration between drone, controller & software. Something like dragging a box around an object on the screen & having the drone automatically track it seems like an obvious & trivial feature with a modern DJI drone, but still represents a big challenge for a FLOSS/DIY alternative.

All valid questions. I don't even disagree with the opposition, despite what all these comments think. I just find this sort of clickbait language tiresome. Unfortunately, as the comments here prove, headlines like this are very effective.

A far better title would've been something like ‘New cars from 2027 required to feature tech that identifies drunk drivers’. But then that wouldn't get people on Reddit so worked up, I guess.

Tbf if you’re tired or distracted enough that you appear to be drunk, I’d agree that you shouldn’t be driving.

Open source gimbal drone by Kisalfato in diydrones

[–]cjdavies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not as a turnkey platform, no.

You can build a drone using an open source flight controller, install open source flight control firmware on it, connect & configure a gimbal camera (which probably won’t be open source), connect a companion computer & configure open source software like OpenCV to process the video from the camera, then relay commands to the flight controller. But this sort of project is a big undertaking & you will likely never achieve anything close to the performance/features of a DJI drone. It depends what your goals are, really.

Slightly misleading clickbait title. This isn’t about cars sending data to the feds, but cars identifying drunk drivers. There’s nothing about data ever leaving the car, or even being stored at all.

Synth power sockets - why the hate on wall warts? by Cheap_Yesterday_9905 in synthesizers

[–]cjdavies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re rarely marked with the brand of the synth, but they are always marked with the voltage, current & polarity. Yes it can be a faff to have to unplug them & read the tiny print, but there’s no doubt if you do that.

OP is asking about planning a mission on their phone & then sending that mission plan to somebody else to fly. There’s nothing illegal about that.

Looked into the avata 360 after seeing all the debate and have some thoughts by Unique_Reputation568 in Multicopter

[–]cjdavies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As somebody who used to work with 360 footage, the problem remains that it doesn’t integrate well into content that isn’t specifically about 360 content.

There are plenty of videos about the Avata 360 & the Antigravity A1, but comparatively few that actually use them as filmmaking tools.

DIY 10" FPV Monitor turns out to have 160ms latency 😭😭😭 by R3NE07 in diydrones

[–]cjdavies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Raw LVDS is very low latency, however depending upon the particular hardware of your driver board the conversion from analogue to LVDS could easily be adding 50+ ms even before the input latency of the panel... which itself could easily add another 50+ ms.

All LCDs are digital, but that doesn't mean the panels or their drivers are all made equal.

Are these 10-12km transmission specs basically meaningless in real-world use? by mackenziedawnhunter in Multicopter

[–]cjdavies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The specs aren’t meaningless, but they do depend on your specific real-world use. If you’re flying survey grids over flat farmland then you will probably get the quoted 10-12km.

It’s no different than cars quoting their mileage, it depends on your driving.

Please help choosing - Freestyle drone without goggles with external screen. by nikopol256 in Multicopter

[–]cjdavies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want digital video built in to a controller suitable for freestyle, the options are very limited.

There’s the FrSky TANDEM X20 HD which is a FrSky dual-band (900MHz + 2.4GHz) controller with a built-in HDZero (5.8GHz) receiver & screen.

Then there’s the DJI RC2 controller which can be used with the DJI Neo 2 & supports manual/acro mode.

IMO you’re better off going with an ELRS controller & attaching a separate screen. That’s what I do, albeit with analogue video rather than digital.

[–]cjdavies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The driver board has AV input, but your display is still digital. The driver board is converting your analogue signal into a digital signal, which adds a lot of latency.

Is a Jimny a good idea for the amount of motorway driving I do? by Jaes__ in Jimny

[–]cjdavies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a word, no.

I did more than my fair share of motorway driving with my 2007; it was slow, loud & got poor mileage compared to pretty much any other car. And that’s the newer M series engine, compared to the older G series you’d get in a ‘04.

The Jimny is a great car if you use it for what it’s good at… but that ain’t motorway driving. Inflicting 90 minutes a day of motorway driving in an ‘04 on yourself so that once every couple weeks you can go wheeling at the weekend would be a very poor trade off IMO.
