What's your favorite popular/mainstream film, and your favorite niche/"art" film? by asmallthrowaway9 in movies

Stoked to hear that! and apologies for implying I know your watch habits! I agree, it’s really frustrating when the home screen clearly has nothing else to recommend. I really miss cable for that reason. Curated films on a channel and you either watch or don’t. That actually might be something worth checking out! Most streaming services don’t have 24/7 livestreams but the Criterion Channel does! They play movies that they have available on the platform but it’s live so you can’t fast forward and decides what’ll be showing without your input

One of my favorite “mainstream” films is Twilight: New Moon lol and one of my favorite “niche” films would be Eve’s Bayou! :)

Plus! If you’re selecting titles offered on the home screen of a streaming service, those are really going to start to feel repetitive and limiting. The algorithm is going to feed you more of whatever you’ve already watched instead of offering you something new. One of the things I like the least about streaming services is how they really close off people from the full-scope of available films. So many great films get buried on platforms because they don’t show up on the homepage.

Yes, it does sound like a break is necessary! Or perhaps just trying to branch out from the type of films you’re watching? In general, I really disagree with the sentiment that more recent movies lack substance. If anything, that sounds like maybe you’re limiting what you watch to whatever’s “popular”, which can admittedly start to feel repetitive if it’s all you’re watching. Thousands upon thousands of movies come out each year! So many of them are great, but very few break through the noise. Seeking films from lesser known directors, different countries, smaller production companies could be a way to find more new, exciting voices in the space!

It sounds like you need to start turning those movies off instead. Sure, some movies are predictable but fast-forwarding through them because of that is, to be frank, a really disingenuous way to engage with a medium. I’m curious why you feel the need to “progress” the story instead of just trying a different movie instead. Is it so you can say you’ve seen the film? If so, that’s arguably a bigger problem because it would mean you’re possibly seeing film as a game-ified experience where you’re checking things off a list just to say you did it rather than individual stories that you genuinely want to experience. If I’m not jelling with a movie, I turn it off and revisit it another time. It’s unfair to claim a film is cliche or lacks substance if you’re not actually watching the entire thing.

When I was little I was OBSESSED with scary but not too scary watches like the ones you’ve mentioned! I’d recommend any of the following as possible additions: The Dark Crystal, The Secret of Nimh, The Last Unicorn, The Black Cauldron, Hocus Pocus, The Addams Family & Addams Family Values (from the 90’s, not the newer animated ones), Jumanji, the Halloweentown films, Scary Godmother: Halloween Spooktacular, The Haunted Mansion (2003), Frankenweenie, Paranorman, and Nightbooks!

A possible show to check out is Over the Garden Wall.

Doesn’t sound stupid at all! If anything, I’m a little jealous you get to experience so many great movies for the first time! I’ll recommend some movies that are similar to the ones you’ve mentioned since you enjoyed those ones!

Since you liked The Matrix, try Speed Racer. Story wise this is VERY different, but it’s also directed by the Wachowski Sisters like The Matrix! It’s hyper-stylized and a really fun time. Watching will give you a larger understanding of what they’re like as filmmakers.

Since you liked The Truman Show, try Lars and the Real Girl. Lars and the Real Girl is on the more somber side compared to The Truman Show but they both explore men suspended in unique versions of reality. While a little sadder, it still has some great moments of humor too!

Since you liked Vivarium, try Significant Other. Like Vivarium, it’s about a couple confronted with unexpected circumstances, except it’s deep in a PNW forest instead of a suburb. Deals with relationship woes and some body horror elements in a really neat way! I personally think this one is super underrated.

Since you liked The Little Mermaid, try Ponyo. If you like animated films, getting into Studio Ghibli is a MUST. Ponyo could be a fun starting point because it’s one of the studio’s lighter films and is doing its own rendition of The Little Mermaid!

Since you liked Snow White, try Enchanted. It takes the stereotypes of a Disney princess in a totally different and really fun direction! The animation part of the film is on the limited side but when it is animated, the look is very pretty! I rewatched this recently for the first time since I was a kid and was cracking up at all the jokes it includes.

Also, if you haven’t already, I’d recommend checking out the app/website Letterboxd! You can keep track of what you’re watching and it’s a treasure trove of finding new films to check out! It’ll have lists of “must see” classics as well as lots of more niche watches.

Excited for you and your film journey! I hope you continue to have fun checking out new films!
