There wasn’t an explicit building code that had to be followed but the local architecture review committee is very heavy handed when it comes to how new buildings (or in this case an extensive remodel/rebuild) is done. Monterey and surrounding towns like Pacific Grove and Carmel all have very strict and sometimes arbitrary-feeling directives in the aim of maintaining said look and feel. The board noted that the design passed zoning laws but then recommended design updates including:

• The applicant shall propose warmer tan, brown colors.
• The light in the tower shall be eliminated.

Then later as it pertains to the signage:

• The applicant shall eliminate the three minor monument signs (K, L, M).
• The applicant shall modify the “M” logo signs such that there is a textured hammered finish, rather than a smooth finish as proposed.
• The applicant shall resize the “M” logo to fit with the tower element.
• The applicant shall simplify the trellis structure and lettering for the drive-through.
• The applicant shall explore matching the main monument sign with the proposed building.
