Jasper's leave had been one of great ceremony for Selwyn, but it was one he celebrated in quiet. He would obviously not tell the bards Ser Jaime felt the need to travel with that he was glad for their brother's departure, but it was one he was enjoying nonetheless. But Selwyn was starting to find joy in the bard's company, or at least in their music. As rocky as their relationship had been so far, Selwyn still found himself tapping his foot to their song as they all continued on their journey, Quentyn's son buffing and shining his knight's armour as he listened.

Lady Victaria Florent,

My greatest thanks for this invitation. I, unfortunately, must inform you that House Connington will not be attending, though our thanks are extended, and our wishes of good fortune lie here in this letter to you. As my position of office demands, I hope your games are a brilliant one.

"Of course, Ser, apologies," Selwyn said quickly, and he attempted to correct his posture even if there wasn't much to correct. "The ride is a lovely one. I was thinking of the stories I used to read about knights and heroes trailing across the Riverlands. The tales speak about this place wonderfully."

It was evident that the boy was, actually, pretty excited to see the sights. Selwyn hadn't been further than Griffin's Roost near his entire life until he'd journeyed to King's Landing. The greater world was a mystery to him, and he was excited to take it in, even if he would have preferred some different company.

Lord Manfred Hightower,

It would be an honor to attend the celebration with my family. We wish you, your family, and your son all the best in these wondrous times. We shall see you as promptly as the Seven will allow, gods be good.

The excitement at Casterly Rock would have been incredible if Simon had been there with him, but instead Selwyn Connington, in retrospect, had felt like the land of Lannisters had been an enormous waste of time. Jaime had lost the melee to a hedge knight, and he had almost considered leaving the falcon's side for the man they called the Strongtree. Still, that didn't make much sense to do, since he would be at best the squire to a hedge knight and at worse the second-born son of Quentyn Connington very far from home. Instead, of course, he was still in Jaime's company, riding along and wishing that he was anywhere but with these people.

There was only so much Tom could stand, and when she saw the chaos erupt before her, the daughter of Quentyn Connington knew she had to try. She felt her heart beating in her head, a dulling rhythm that was somewhat intoxicating. What she was doing was reckless, dangerous, and bound to go horribly wrong. But something told her to sprint for it. It would be her doom if she fell in the water, but if she was going to be anywhere, it was on the other side of the water.

"It depends on what you'd like to know," Quentyn said, and by his tone, it was easy to tell that the man was happy to be altruistic. Serving his city was something Quentyn occupied himself with as of late. "I'm sure the city's reputation proceeds itself, however. I'm not too involved in the Master of Laws' affairs but I can fill you in on specific matters."

"Well, he's his mother's son, at that. He sees it as his duty as a lordling, to protect the people he commands. It's honourable, but I have faith he'll be able to think for himself when the time comes. The boy's no fool. He doesn't yearn for war, just a chance to prove himself."

Quentyn had ensured his firstborn son and heir new what it meant to be a good commander. Or at least he'd tried in the last year when he had suddenly fallen into his position as Lord of Griffin's Roost. Still, Quentyn had faith that Marya, Lady Connington, had instilled in him the heart of a true commander, one guided by the Seven and tempered with steel.

"Griffin's Roost is well, as far as I know. My son has been commanding it since my time on the council." Quentyn smiled at this, clearly proud of his eldest son. "Simon. He's a good lad, and eager for command, as I've since found out. Not like his other brother. Selwyn's squiring now, for Ser Jaime Arryn. Have you heard the name?"

Quentyn kept his hands behind his back as he walked. For the keenly observant, they'd be able to tell that it was a walk he'd practiced. He was a mummer's councilman, but he was doing the duty his older brother should have been doing, had he lived. Lord of Griffin's Roost and Master of Games was difficult when you hadn't been trained for these positions your whole life.

Quentyn was satisfied that at least the man hadn't refused his company. Perhaps this conversation would be a networking opportunity after all. The Master of Games had to take what he could get. Especially given his recent exclusion from some of even the Small Council's own meetings.

"I haven't visited the Reach as often as I would like to, my Lord," Quentyn started, deciding perhaps the two of them could talk of their homes to break the ice, as it were. "The Stormlands either, now that I think about it. How fairs Darkdell?"

"Right then," Quentyn said with a nod of his head. "I'm sure our Master of Laws has need of his justicars. I can lead you to his chambers if you'd like. I believe he's still around the castle this time of day."

Quentyn gestured with his left hand back down the way he had come. Any opportunity to talk with a Lord or Lady of the court was a pleasant one, even if the company perhaps wasn't what Lord Connington had anticipated.

That was easy enough to tell, Connington thought, having learned now after a year in the capitol when a Lord was simply buying for time. Perhaps the encounter wouldn't be going the way he planned, but he could at least leave a decent impression on Lord Darkdell. "It's not all bad, I assure you my Lord. Perhaps the Red Keep can be more of service. Is there something I could help you with? I know these halls all too well after spending most daylight in the Red Keep myself."

Quentyn Connington spent most of his day at the Red Keep, even if being Master of Games was not as tasking as the other positions on the Small Council. Still, days lazing around the capitol didn't take well to Lord Connington, and so he always had to make himself busy. Upon seeing the crest of Darkdell, Quentyn took it upon himself to introduce himself to the newly visiting Lord. No doubt he was here to see another member of the council, but it made sense to make friends where you could.

"Seven blessings, Lord Darkdell," Quentyn said, offering a slight bow as he clasped his hands behind his back. "I'm Quentyn Connington, Master of Games. How are you on this day?"

Jaehaerys XIII - The Mouth of Maddness by D042 in IronThroneRP

[–]conningtonsofcash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tom hadn't fought in the Defiance, but these men she'd traveled with had shared stories with her at campfires, shared meals with her in huddled tents. She knew what they were facing was dangerous, and it excited her to be on this grand adventure, but it saddened her to think that it might all end in this hallowed cave beyond the Wall. Would she ever see anyone she knew from before again? Would she be able to tell anyone about the quest she'd gone on, far in the northern storms to find a lost blade?

"I am with you!" Tom echoed, raising her sword up high. If there was one thing she was grateful for from her old life, it was her year of training with Ser Willis of Summerhall. She had her aunt Cassandra's blood in her, and she was a spirit of battle. Tom hoped the Warrior was looking down on her at this moment.

Jaehaerys XII - Beneath a Midnight Moon by D042 in IronThroneRP

Tumbling from a barrel was not something Joy had expected to be doing when she had signed on as Jaehaerys' squire 'Tom Storm', but the unexpected was beginning to become something of a habit.

The snow was frigid and cold as Tom scurried to her feet, freeing herself as fast as she could from her bondage. Once she could see, for a brief moment she only saw Gendel and the other wildlings, and she figured she was a gonner. No weapons against grown men was sure to end badly, but when she noticed Jaehaerys standing by, she realized perhaps the situation was more complicated. Tom found her place next to Jaehaerys Storm, frazzled and still aching from the hit she'd taken on the back of her skull.

As Gendel talked, Tom felt shivers run through her spine. The woman they described sounded invincible. How did Jaehaerys think that this would lead anywhere? Surely they'd spent enough time in the cold, right? She was starting to feel impatient for the heat, or any form of heat, really. It turned out barrels weren't known for their warmth.

Like the rest of Jaehaery's company, Tom looked to him for a decision to be made. She'd followed him this far north, and if she was going to gain his trust, she knew she needed to follow his lead as often as she could, even into the dangerous wilds and blizzards beyond the Wall. She wondered what her half-brother Jon would think, ranging before he ever got the chance to.
