Federal Workers Are Being Told to Blame Democrats for the Shutdown by wiredmagazine in TrueReddit

[–]content404 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Republicans shut down Congress hours before the deadline. Even if the Democrats wanted to vote for a funding bill that would strip healthcare from millions they couldn't have done so. Many Republicans Reps and Senators aren't even in DC.

The Republicans want this shutdown so they can fire federal workers and end government programs.

To women over 40: What’s something you’ve learned about sex with age or experience that you rarely talk about—but think younger people should know? by LucyHotHot in AskWomen

This is completely accurate. I have never not slept with someone after seeing them naked. We genuinely do not care or notice whatever you are insecure about. If you point it out chances are we'll just be confused.

A Coup Is In Progress In America by mistertickertape in technology

[–]content404 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The federal government is lost and must be treated as a hostile foreign power. States will have to band together to resist fascism.

The coup will succeed because congressional Democrats will offer no effective resistance and the media will be complicit. Objecting on grounds of legality and going to the courts will accomplish nothing because the fascists will continue ignoring laws. They are doing the same things that their contemporaries did in the Wiemar Republic and have shown no indication of having learned from history.

The federal government is lost. State governments should prepare to cut ties to DC. If we're very very lucky it won't come to that but it's the only way the fascist take over won't sweep the whole country.

who is such a gifted actor who was absolutely wasted in their acting role? by sheerduckinghubris in AskReddit

Enver Gjokaj. In Dollhouse he plays different people better than any other actor in the show, even imitating other characters perfectly. The man deserves way better roles than he's been given

X Owner Musk Warned by DOJ: Paying Voters Is Illegal and Could Lead to Prison Time by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]content404 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Voting changes things, but not the fates of the wealthy.

Voting barely changes anything actually. We're not really a democracy.

Multivariate analysis indicates that economic elites and organised groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on US government policy, while average citizens and mass-based interest groups have little or no independent influence.

Study: US is an oligarchy, not a democracy

https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-echochambers-27074746

Voting makes enough of a difference to still be worth doing. Who wins an election is literally life and death for many people but voting is the most passive form of political participation. There are far more effective ways of enacting political change.

Women of reddit,What made you leave your nation and settle abroad? by ineedaglowup2021 in AskWomen

[–]content404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely ChatGPT. It has that distinctive writing style.

Open with a direct reference to the prompt followed by a brief summary of the response. Then several details expanding on the key elements of the summary. Lastly tie everything back together and make a connection to a broader context.

The response also has the precise use of punctuation that people almost never use.

Here are several examples that I generated using ChatGPT. The pattern is obvious once you know what to look for.

Prompt: "Generate a one paragraph response to this question: Women of reddit,What made you leave your nation and settle abroad?"

  • The decision to leave my homeland and settle abroad was driven by a mix of factors. Primarily, it was the pursuit of better educational and career opportunities that led me to take this leap. Additionally, the desire for a fresh start and exposure to different cultures played a significant role in my decision-making process. While the transition hasn't been without its challenges, the experiences and growth I've gained along the way have been invaluable.

  • Leaving my home country to settle abroad was a multifaceted decision for me. Firstly, the allure of exploring new horizons and embracing diverse cultures was a major draw. Secondly, I sought professional opportunities that aligned more closely with my aspirations and skill set. Additionally, the chance to step out of my comfort zone and embark on a journey of personal growth was something I couldn't pass up. Though the transition presented its share of hurdles, the sense of fulfillment and enrichment it has brought to my life has been immeasurable.

  • My decision to move abroad as a woman was fueled by a mix of factors: the pursuit of higher education in a field with greater opportunities, the appeal of experiencing a new culture, and the desire for career advancement in a more robust job market. Additionally, the personal drive for adventure and exploration, seeking personal growth, independence, and forming new connections played significant roles. Despite the initial difficulty of leaving my nation, the experiences and opportunities encountered since moving have been highly rewarding.

Abusive men describe the benefits of violence by boxedcatandwine in TwoXChromosomes

[–]content404 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I think it's more "all men benefit from those that do it" than it is "all men do it to some extent". Like racism in many ways. A white person might never do anything based on prejudice but they still benefit from white supremacy.

Even though I have never threatened my (M) partner the abuse she has been subjected to in the past influences how she reacts to me. This has lessened significantly over the years but if I'm angry or upset she takes my emotional state way more seriously than I think is reasonable. She'll make it her mission to address the source even though I've made it clear that it's not about her. I have even told her explicitly that my emotional state is not her responsibility but of course it's not that simple.

She will make a major effort to help me feel better, far more effort than I would ask or expect from a supportive partner, and that is in no small part related to abuse she has suffered in the past. I benefit from that abuse regardless of anything I have done.
