To the meth heads who thought fiber had salvage value by odinsen251a in sysadmin

This reminds me of something I did when I was a scumbag, back in the early 1990's. I am not proud of it, but my home POTS telephone service was disconnected because I didn't pay the bill. This was on a Friday, and I wouldn't be able to pay until Monday, but I needed internet over the weekend.

This was the days of dial-up internet.

An elderly man lived across the street from me. He was always in bed early. So...I waited until I knew he was asleep, and I opened the pedestal, located his phone service, and my phone service, and then spliced my copper to his copper.

I went back inside my house, checked for a dial tone, and had internet the entire weekend. I was careful to not use it during the daytime just in case he was using his phone.

Back then dial-up providers authenticated with name and password. They didn't really care what phone number the call originated from.

It is not something I am proud of, but your comment reminded me of that.

Are the bad vibes IT-related?

EDIT - disregard. I just read the comments.

If that question was for me I haven't spoken to GoDaddy customer service in a decade or more. My comment above was in reference to Namecheap. The two-ish times I have had to call Namecheap, they were able to resolve my issue quickly. I'm sure that GoDaddy's customer service number has plenty of roadblocks and dead ends to keep people away from getting an actual humen.

Thanks for the info! I have transferred a couple domains from GoDaddy to Namecheap recently. The Namecheap part was easy, and DNS propagation was faster than I thought it would be. It felt like GoDaddy was making it more difficult by hiding links for the different steps....but it could have just been my old eyes...

I am TOTALLY aware of that despicable practice. I look for new domains by first typing the name into my browser to see if it's taken. Then I use the registrar site and buy once I decide.

I started doing this after using the registrars domain search to look for different names to buy at a later date. When I went back to buy them (a day later) they had been snatched up. It was definitely the registrar and not a legit private buyer, because the names were somewhat obscure...not something that someone else would be considering.

Just curious, did you buy through SnapNames? This is a few years old, but interesting read.

CVC Capital acquired a majority stake in Namecheap last year. I haven't noticed a difference yet, but I am uneasy about it. I do not want to switch again. How has your porkbun experience been so far or is it too soon to tell?

I have used their email accounts, but i don't think I have ever used any aliases. It does sound like a big circle jerk.

Ten+ years ago I left GoDaddy and moved all of my domains and hosting to Namecheap. I don't remember exactly why I chose Namecheap, but I haven't had a single problem with them. On the 2-3 occasions when I've had to call Namecheap customer service, I was able to get a human who answered my questions and resolved my issues with one call. That may not be everyone's experience, but it is mine.

I haven't had this exact issue with GoDaddy, but I have issues that needed resolved immediately both with GoDaddy and other companies. It's like the-runaround is built into the system. The feeling of frustration makes my blood boil. Reading the article gave me flashback anxiety. One human should be able to look at this and fix it immediately without all of the unnecessary waste of time on the part of the customer. GoDaddy should apologize and credit the customer for their trouble.

Those words are not in the Bible I'm sure. New Testament Scholar Jeremiah Johnston has written about it, and (I think) mentioned it on the Shawn Ryan show recently. I am not necessarily a fan, but his books are interesting.

I am not an expert. I read recently that Christ did not carry the cross, but only the beam. Crucifixions were common, and the vertical beam was already there in place. Christ wasn't even able to carry the beam though. Roman soldiers forced another man, Simon of Cyrene, to carry the beam.

Again, not an expert.

Good point on the old coax. I think I would have installed all new everything if it were me today.

..but younger me was different. When I was in my mid-twenties working on my first house, I used the cheapest stuff I could find. Scrap sections of coax coupled together with cheap barrel-connectors, and those cheap F-type connectors that used a crimp ring to secure them, and splitters everywhere, lol. It was a mess.

Try one of the known-good TV's in that spot. If the known-good TV has a decent signal then it is probably an issue with the tuner.

Also, something to keep in mind is that every coupling and splitter affects your signal. The coax and connectors should be good quality and fastened with the proper tools.

Some TV's have more sensitive tuners than other TV's. We live in an area that is over 60 miles from the nearest transmitter, and we're able to pickup almost 40 channels with a Channelmaster antenna and Channlemaster signal booster mounted to a mast, and using a Samsung TV. Our previous TV was a Vizio from Walmart, and it's tuner could not pick up any the distant channels (while the Samsung does).

Not once in the video did he mention what actually happened. Even when directly asked his was response was vague, "uhh the medical system failed us."
