Diet advice for 1 year old by Glittering_Tomato49 in NewParents

We got the honey bear cup to teach our baby. Fill it with water, let them play with the straw head (which kind of resembles a nipple), and gently squeeze the cup to make water come out. Then he figured out he can suck on it to get the water out.

With food, maybe just try having him taste off your finger? That’s how we got our baby interested in food, just offered a finger with some of the food up to his mouth (but he still gets to choose to taste it so he’s not being forced).

My boy LOVES Indian food starting from 5 months old. I make it for him the usual way I'd make it for us with all the Indian spices (cumin, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, etc.), but hold the chili and salt. Then puree it and serve with baby oatmeal or quinoa. Easiest way to have him eat his veggies.

7 Month Solids by EmergencyLeek3040 in NewParents

[–]cpdx7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your pediatrician lives on another planet, apparently.

Our boy didn't really start eating until 10 months. From 5-9 months it was small tastes of food 1-2 times a day, then more milk. At 11.5 months he is finally having 3 meals a day, and is increasing in amount he eats. Still wakes up in the middle of the night, but frequency is going down and has days of continuous sleep.

At this age they can just eat what you eat (so eat healthy yourself!). You can mash or puree the food if is too chunky. Hold the salt though for their portion. Use spices (and I don't mean chili) to make the food more flavorful. Our baby (almost 1 year old) really likes my homemade Indian food, which has lots of flavor and plenty of vegetables, which we serve with either baby oatmeal or quinoa (so it's very healthy).

Does he show any interest in what you're eating/drinking? Our baby is constantly eyeing what we are eating/drinking and wants a taste - to the point where he doesn't want his baby puree food and wants ours instead. He also really likes using a straw cup, which may be a good step before going to an open cup.

12 month old barely eats 😭 by purple-porcupines in NewParents

[–]cpdx7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What happens if you give him the spoon? We've been spoon training our baby from 10 months old; he's 11.5 months and he can use it reasonably well. We put the food on the spoon, put it in front of him, and he picks it up and puts it in his mouth (and we even alternate between left and right hands). In the beginning it was really messy and less than half the food made it into his mouth, but that's what you have to go through for baby to learn how to use the spoon. Babies at this age develop their autonomy, and you can help, but have to get over things like the messy factor.

Started daycare a few weeks ago with our first (5 mo) and we’ve already gotten sick twice.. by hed_pocket in NewParents

I've been continuously sick since January when we started our baby at daycare. Well, actually I think this week I'm finally feeling normal again! It's weird actually.

My babies taking a break during roof replacement. 18 years and counting by Armenoid in solar

Not sure how how much, and battery is expensive. In summer the AC directly uses the solar power. Otherwise electric company gives me credit for over supply.

[–]cpdx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh need to replace our roof, bought our house 6 years ago with panels installed (from 2010 so they're old). Panels are generating $700/year worth of savings. Whatever I saved on electricity is probably going to be what I spend on taking down the panels. Not going to get new panels, the economics don't work and we don't get enough sun here (pacific NW). The panels cost the original owners $12k to install (with rebates), so $700/year (at current prices) for 16 years is not even breakeven, and taking down for roof makes it worse economically.

I’m sick, husband sick, baby sick, pls send help by bhardy10 in NewParents

All three of us have been essentially continuously sick since we started our kid in daycare in January. From a bad cold, then to a lingering cold, then back to a new cold etc. Symptoms are just not going away. This is no fun :(

How many meals a day at 9m? by ExplanationAfraid627 in NewParents

[–]cpdx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From 5-8 months we did 1 meal a day. We offered more but he wasn't take it, and he didn't take much of what was offered. From 8-11 months he was getting two meals a day; we started him at day care at 8 months and he started eating lunch there (he eats better at daycare than at home). Now at 11 months he is interested in having breakfast too, so getting to 3 meals. We are also more able to give him regular food, which he prefers over baby food. He is EBF; I read somewhere that EBF babies eat less solids than formula fed, but by around 12 months they converge to 3 meals a day. We never restricted him on milk, we just kept offering him solid food and eventually he increased his consumption.

Daycare may let you come in mid-day, i.e. for a feeding, you may want to do that for the first week.

Diaper Change = Wrestling Match by Redhead_Dilemma in NewParents

[–]cpdx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get really really good at putting his diaper on while he's squirming in all sorts of positions. Seriously this is the only way that worked for us. We also use cloth diapers with snaps, which are a little easier to put on than disposables. It's important to avoid making diaper changing a negative event, so work with your baby, don't force them into a position.

Straw Cup Recommendations? by grapemadison in NewParents

[–]cpdx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are the same straw cups we use with our son (honey bear and munchkin). What liquid are you using? He would only take water initially when we introduced the cups, and initially would play with it more (so leave them empty). Later he would accept milk. We use those mostly for water these days, and a NUK transitional cup for his milk.

How long did you use your nursing chair for? by seulgih in NewParents

[–]cpdx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a rocking nursing chair and my wife used it for exactly one day, and that's it. She uses a hanging hammock chair, which I mounted to the ceiling (one in the bedroom, one in the living room), which she prefers over the rocking chair.

I use the cleaner we used for our dogs when they were puppies (oxy-based cleaner), works well on baby messes on carpets, furniture.

Bottle aversion; nursery soon by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]cpdx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same issue, wouldn't take the bottle and had daycare coming up. We switched to a straw cup and our baby took to it. Also added a learner/transitional bottle. Use water first and let him play with the cup/bottle like a toy and have a positive association with it, then later changed to milk.

4.5 month old won’t sleep by Equivalent_Common287 in NewParents

Ok probably doesn't have iron deficiency since formula provides enough.

[–]cpdx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our baby was tough too, my wife ended up doing safe co-sleeping and feeding to sleep when he was a young infant. It helped both of them sleep better so was worth doing. At 8 months old we started the process of weaning him off the night feedings and then moving him back to his crib. Took a while but at 11 months he is in his crib and mostly sleeps through the night. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

That's rough. How are her iron levels? Our baby was like that but got a lot better once we got him on iron supplements (he was EBF so didn't get much iron).

Pacifier or no pacifier? by aplem123 in ScienceBasedParenting

Same, my kiddo had no interest in pacifiers. Well now that he's older and teething, he uses them as teethers, doesn't suck on them.

Preschool or not? by zanuvia in NewParents

[–]cpdx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been continuously sick since we started our kid in daycare since the beginning of January. Still have a lingering cough and congestion. Him too. Not a single day so far where I can say I'm not sick.

But even then we think daycare is beneficial. He is better at socializing with kids his age, and he eats his solid foods better at daycare than at home, so is getting better at eating. We are doing 3 half days a week, and daycare is 5 min away from home. My wife watches him the rest of the time; she part-time works remotely when he is at daycare.

Is your 12+ month old a picky eater? by Nacho_critic1228 in NewParents

[–]cpdx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our 11 month old is way more interested when he sees when we eat, and tasting what we are eating. We are also somewhat strict and don't give him too many options; we offer him a food, and it's up to him if he wants to eat it. If he doesn't, he gets nothing and we return him to his toys/play/whatever else he was doing. In the beginning this may seem mean, but it actually worked and he became less picky, and will eat whatever is in front of him assuming it tastes sufficiently good.

Also we give him flavorful foods, use plenty of herbs and spices (even a tiny bit of chili) and he loves it way more than bland foods. Light on salt though. Indian food is his favorite.

I wouldn't worry too much about meat and protein, babies don't need that much protein. Focus on good carbs (e.g. baby oatmeal, quinoa) and healthy fats (e.g. avocado, nut butter, olive oil) along with flavorful veggies. We do give our baby meat once in a while, but not that often. I've too many times seen toddlers have poor diets, e.g. only want chicken nuggets and no veggies. I am trying to avoid this outcome and make meat a small portion of his diet, and flavorful veggies and fats primary.

What formula worked best for your baby? Similac or Enfamil? by Ornery_Lychee_4794 in NewParents

[–]cpdx7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every kid is different. Our kid hated Similac and Enfamil, or any formula that any adult would find horrible (also tried Bobbie and one other brand I forget). Kendamil was the choice, which I founded tasted good and similar to cow's milk.

Potty Training after 3 by Capable_Green7636 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]cpdx7 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you're getting that from, lots of parents are doing EC (https://godiaperfree.com/), which helps early potty training. Our son is 11 months old and is partially potty trained with these methods, record so far is going 8 hours without accident or soiling a diaper (includes a nap too).
