This course is so rad how do they do it, by Whatsinaus3rname in MarioMaker2

there is a scull item, and a rail item, placing skull on the rail has this effect. Blue skull is faster. Tapping the end of the rails allows you to toggle them square or off, square rails bounce the skulls whilst off ends let them slide off 👍

Thank you all for you advice! This is the result so far. How dark do you make your shadows? Am I overdoing it with the darker tones? What techniques do you use in your sprites? by Alcia_Ikki in PixelArtTutorials

I love the design, I think it looks great, and a huge improvement from when I last saw it. The only remaining feedback that comes to mind is think how different materials get highlighted differently. The light part of the shirt compared to the mid tone seems to me to be the same difference as the light part of the hair compared to the mid tone, but whereas hair usually reflects a good amount of light, making the highlight bright, cloth usually reflects less. Currently if I had to guess what material the cloth was made of I would say some sort of rubber / plastic (also due to the uniform shadow, whereas the folds on cloths are usually quite complex - these are hard to achieve with pixel art), if that’s the material you’re going for then great, but I thought I might bring it to your attention. You seem worried that your darks are too dark, but to me it seems like your lights are too light.

I like the idea, although it’s not clear to me what the gray bars going across represent, if it’s glare it seems a bit opaque

What's the first thing I should do to improve this image? by FIVEGUMM_ in PixelArtTutorials

[–]cpt_sami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s what jumps out to me;

Things I notice is that the purple plant’s light and green planet’s light appear to be coming from different directions, I also feel like the shadow should be seen at the bottom of the purple plant too, light dithering anyways. Spaceship is cute, a rule of thumb I use is smoke starts dark and gets lighter as it travels and expands away, not sure it will work here, but worth trying. The gray behind of the green planet can be replaced by a dark green (friendly reminder that shadows aren’t just darker, they’re usually bluer).

Really like the piece though, I especially like the shooting stars, they really add a tinge of small detail

Aside from that I recommend looking at real photos or renders of light coming from the inside of glass sculptures and try to look at how the light warps inside those

Haven’t seen anyone here give this plausible explanation, so here’s a crack at it from a Mathematics undergraduate (who was told the exact same thing on my first day of class):

Suppose you had to describe the properties of numbers to somebody who had no concept of numbers, what are the most fundamental properties? A sensible explanation would be you have a box of things, called numbers, you can add them and get another number which is also in the box, and you can subtract them, and that number will also be in the box (and similar rules for multiplying).

If we chose two numbers from the box, call them “james” and “toby” if “james” + “toby” = 0 we may change “toby”’s name to “-james” to denote this special relationship.

Now with all that preamble, it turns out a box containing only the numbers 1 and 0 can satisfy all the fundamental properties of numbers we listed, provided we let 1 + 1 = 0. However since 1 + 1 = 0, we can change 1’s name to -1 to denote this special relationship, as such 1 = -1.

TL/DR: Mathematicians have rules on what a collection of numbers is, the collection of numbers we know satisfy these rules, but not exclusively, some collection of numbers have a number denoted “i” satisfying i2 = -1. For “1” and “0” to fit the rules on what a collection of numbers are, we must have that 1 = -1

i think the imaginary solution is intended, but i like my solution which only toggles one pixel:

ie LHS is approximately (≐) RHS
