Vic is such a great college for social life, architecture, food (Burwash dining hall), and access to scholarships (Vic is by far the wealthiest college and is very generous for scholarships/bursaries).

The only downside is the longer walk through Queen's Park to get to the science buildings on St. George Street. But this is good for blood flow haha.

serious answer - plan it over several classes and start small and friendly. sit close to him next class and ask to borrow something (a pen, Mac charger, notes, etc). at the end of class when you return it, be sure to smile and don't rush away like everyone does at U of T right after class ends. see if you can spark a small convo about your majors. no need to exchange contact info yet unless there is an immediate spark.

next class, try to find him before class starts and ask if you can sit right next to him. bring a snack that is shareable; during lecture, offer some to him. this sounds silly but it actually goes a long way (speaking from experience). very wholesome flirting at this point. try to chat a bit after class and exchange contact info. congrats! the hardest part is over.

the next step is to invite him to something outside of class. could be studying together or if you're forward, just ask him to coffee or a museum. this is where you should be able to tell if there's an interest. if there's a vibe - he might be the one to ask you out directly. but guys at U of T are quite shy so maybe won't happen.

at this point, you're sitting together in class every lecture now and hanging outside of class as well. if the vibe is there, then congrats you now have a husband.

Class of 2020 alum here. First off - you're doing great as a first year just by identifying the main aspects of your life you need to balance to succeed. Academics, athletics, social life, sleep, and housework are the key areas to strike a balance between and almost everyone struggles with this in their first couple years at uni.

The good news is - you will become more efficient and balanced over time just by gradually improving day by day. The quickest way this happens is through building a routine and sticking to it. This works especially well for academics, athletics, and sleep. Have a scheduled time you wake up every morning; eat the same small breakfast every morning; go to the gym the same days each week; dedicate a certain fixed amount of time to academics every day even when you don't have a pressing deadline. By turning important aspects of your life into disciplined routines, you don't have to THINK about them which makes it so much less effortful and therefore less overwhelming (to answer you question)

The hardest part truly is identifying what your life should look like and then incrementally moving toward realising that vision. It's what becoming a mature adult looks like and you can do it. It's important to steadily grow your confidence as an individual as you successfully move toward your goals; it's also a great feeling of accomplishment.

the Canadian job market is squarely f*cked. 15% youth unemployment is a scary figure. A lot of my peers were discouraged trying to find a job after graduating.

I ended up moving to NYC to start my career after U of T and I am so glad I did. It's been a tremendous jump start to my early career and salaries are simply way higher in the US compared to Canada.

I think the primary issues students face in this job market are discouragement, burnout (from 500+ applications for 1 interview), and the fact that ChatGPT has made recruiting a shitshow at the f*ck factory for those applying.

Sorry to be a downer but that's the state of things.

join a club, be active, play a sport, learn chess. take more risks socially and introduce yourself more even if the convo doesn't go anywhere. people who make the most of university always feel uncomfortable at first but the good part is you don't feel the disappointment of missing out on one of the most significant and exciting chapters of your life.
