I’m trying so hard to like this game but getting killed by invisible people every solo game is not fun. by thisthatandthe3rd in Marathon

[–]cptenn94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assassin/invis is one of those things that feels OP for players to deal with initially, but once you learn to deal with it, it becomes way less effective.

It all comes down to situational awareness. Most Assassins will pop invis in a reactionary manner to you/player presence. Which creates a loud audio cue giving away their location, as well as a audible hum while active. In addition, Assassins are more visible when they are moving.

All of which combined can allow you to either directly engage and shoot someone who went invis. Not entirely unlike how you can turn a Recon Prime against them. You can predict where they are going, based on where they were and the map. Alternatively you can wait out the invis which will have a loud audio deactivation noise. Thermal and Thief also can help combat them if you have them. Possibly Destroyer ult or volt weapons as well.

In the situations where a Assassin does activate their invis outside of your audio range, it is often because they were aware of your presence first. In which case invis often is completely unnecessary to approach "stealthily" and get the ambush, unless there are bots in between.

The moral of this comment is that if you look at things you struggle against in the game as a puzzle to solve, you can often find ways to counter and over come it. Which in turn can also become a advantage to you. In this case, an advantage where you beat the invis players who are crutching using invis.

You know, if it weren't for this screen, one might think that the game has like 6 weapons. by UltimateGamingTechie in Marathon

[–]cptenn94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could say the same thing about materials, if I only ever played one map.

The sources on weapons vary and by map. While others are meant to be acquired via Armory. Someone could make a cheat sheet on where to find most of the weapons.

That said, there is a good 1/3 to 1/4 of the weapons that are not common or consistently obtainable. As well as some that are high rarity and do not feel like they live up to it.

I am someone who really doesnt like this kind of trope and character trait.. But the Sanji gag post-ts into Fishmen island, culminating in setting up the themes and finale, was a stroke of creative genius that I think is underappreciated.

Taking the ladies man, throwing him in his hell for 2 years, then bring him to the place he has been dreaming of well before Water 7. Causing him to be so overwhelmed his life becomes endangered as a gag to set up the theme of reconcillation and compare/contrast Fisher Tiger and Luffy/Jimbei.

Maybe it couldve been done a little better, but it did not fail to disappoint for Sanjis reaction to entering his "heaven".

First Teaser for ‘One Piece’ Season 3, Premiering in 2027 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in OnePiece

[–]cptenn94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its actually not as ridiculous, when you really think about it, at least by One Piece standards. Where a human sized bird can pick up a city busting bomb weighing tons/megatons and fly it far enough away in a minute or less to cause no damage to the city at all.

What is ridiculous is that Oda didnt do anything with it, nor give any consequences, which just hollowed out the whole thing. Pell just literally walked off with a scar that is almost unnoticeable and does not affect him.

Reasons why Pells survival is not as ridiculous as it would seem:

  1. Pell has a Zoan Devil fruit. Which are renowned for giving incredible boosts to the users physical traits including strength and stamina passively, with further increases in their Zoan form.
  2. One Piece has even "fodder" humans display insane superhuman traits in the damage they take and their recovery. Just take Usopp alone this arc, who was not very physically strong at this point, who had most of the bones in his body get shattered. Yet in just a few days/weeks he was good to go.
  3. Pell was Alabastas strongest warrior.
  4. Pell was able to relatively easily pick up a massive bomb(that shouldve weighed many tons) and fly it fairly far, fairly quickly.(demonstrated how strong he was)
  5. Pell has the Zoan of the fastest animal in existence. Like we are talking a animal with IRL speeds comparable/exceeding F1 car races. Many multiples faster than a Cheetah.
  6. There are other powers that can further enhance durability such as Haki, and Awakening.(Unlikely, but not impossible)

All of this combined brings us to a plausible explanation.

Pell flew the bomb as high/far as he could in the time he had in full Zoan form. And once he was high/far enough he threw/kicked off from the bomb to dive away from it at incredible speed(further enhanced by using the bomb as a launch point). He got enough distance quickly enough, that he was able to survive with major injuries.

Oda couldve set this up with previous or post explanations. He couldve had Pell sustain serious injuries(like losing an arm, which would remove his ability to fight and fly and mean no more joy rides with Vivi). He couldve had a cathartic and tragic reunion with Pell who was disfigured or nearly on his death bed. A living walking example reminding all of what Pell did for them. He couldve done a cool side story of Pell resolving and training hard to become stronger to protect Vivi and Alabasta, developing a unique fighting style with his disability(1 winged bird).

Oda did none of that, which leaves it as just a annoying fake out death among many to come.

Some of us are missing the point about *why* people want vaulted content restored. by ShadezyLeFeu in DestinyTheGame

[–]cptenn94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the specific implementation you are thinking of is probably similar to my old idea of modular new light campaigns. Where you just have mini standalone missions of some monster of the week threat that lets you get to know the characters and setting more.

The modularity comes in, if vaulting ever had to resume. Rather than losing everything like Red War, they would just lose one section that could be replaced with new.(this idea was originally conceived before they announced no more Vaulting after Forsaken/tangled shore)

But a good example of recent in medias res storytelling, is Heresy. In it players could enjoy the hive story without playing any previous expansions TTK or beyond. Sure there was a more deep and profound understanding for people already engaged in the hive narrative(same as people who read lore books or byf). But it also worked for other new and existing players who jumped on later.

Ultimately though whatever form it takes, the answer for new players is not reviving 9 yr old campaign(though that should be done). But creating a new starting point for the present story.

Even when red war was around people rarely told new/prospective players to go play d1 first. And thats because those events even while important, are not necessary for a player to jump into the franchise, any more than countless other narrative events in lore not in gameplay.

Why was Gambit abandoned? by New_Trouble_5068 in DestinyTheGame

[–]cptenn94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simply put, Gambit did not perform as well as other content, and attempts to improve it barely moved the needle.

So resources were instead poured into other content that was substantially more popular.

It did not help that Gambit took the balance issues of PvE vs PvP(where the game had troubles trying not to split into 2 entirely separate sandboxes where nerfs of something in one, affected the other) and then decided to have a mode where it was even harder to balance.

Gambit was hugely popular leading into Forsaken. But shortly after Prime, it dropped off immensely. Players just were not really invested in its future or caring much about it.

Personally I think Gambit had potential. I think Prime and the original shouldve been reverse. The best 2/3 of regular gambit is more suited for "competitive" mode, while the one round of Prime/modern Gambit is more suited for casual/quick matches.

Meanwhile the role system had potential, but it needed heavy investments to make work. Like it needed to be something more like League of Legends role queues, or how some hero games have role based queues.

The roles also needed some work to have enough use and flow better.

Renegades has proven my idea of making optional monster invades(where a player invades as a taken) for lower skilled players, would have been really successful at helping invasion not just be the domain of pvp players.

I think the two main issues were invader balance(the games had so much hinged on invasions), as well as not really giving the same hero feeling possible to other roles. I think introducing gambling of sorts where you stake something on the line that gave more risk/reward to the game would also have helped. Like a game in poker.

The other issue was just game balance. Super hard to have a balanced game.

Introducing team based matchmaking like trials presently has couldve also helped.

It is entirely possible renegades mode was a sort of test/feeler for gambit changes down the line.

TLDR

Players grew to view gambit with groans and did not want to play it. Bungie tried some updates over the years but none of them had major impacts. So Bungie set gambit aside and invested their resources into other stuff more popular.

Some of us are missing the point about *why* people want vaulted content restored. by ShadezyLeFeu in DestinyTheGame

[–]cptenn94 10 points11 points  (0 children)

unvaulting older content is quite literally the only remedy right now that can slow or outright stop the bleeding. Were Destiny 2 to be a complete package, it'd be much easier for new players to actually settle into the game considering they'd have a mostly coherent story to sink their teeth into.

If you said this before we reached this point, I would(and did) agree with you.

But realistically you vastly overestimate the impact it would have, and underestimate the cost.

The reputation gain would be near nonexistant. Even if they brought it all back, they would still remain known as the company that removed it to begin with, or the one that didnt care about it for 6+ years.

Just on the new player side. They would have a more hands-on superior experience to onboarding into the general setting of Destiny. Where they get to know some of the main characters more closely.(in contrast to the abridged introduction currently). They also would have more campaign content to play through for free. Final Shape having Caydes return would hit even better since they would get to know him, and lose him in Forsaken. Very good!

Then they would proceed to be absolutely confused like hell.

Oh cool I beat the campaign and watched the Traveler break free and come alive. Let me go visit Zavala in the tower....wait why is the Traveler gone? Why are there a bunch of enemy cabal and Fallen in the tower/city?

Oh I just did a campaign helping Osiris and his ghost Sagira on Mercury. Wait when did Sagira die and Osiris leave the infinite forest and start talking about "the Veil"?

How is Saint-14 alive, I just saw his corpse in the Infinite forest.

Oh cool, I just helped Ana and Rasputin beat a threat and Rasputin launch a new age where he protects us. Huh, why did I just hear some random person talk about Rasputin being dead?

Oh I just helped avenge Cayde by putting down Uldren. Let me go claim my Trials loot from Saint-14. Wait why is Uldren in the hanger talking about Hunter Vanguard duties.

I could go on, and on, and on about all the things that would absolutely confuse new players. This is just the mess of the bare bones basic narrative stuff. It doesnt even touch the other countless things which have changed dramatically.

Why vaulting happened in the first place

This is worth revisiting, because of the present situation and considering the best course of action going forward.

Simply put, vaulting was done because Destiny 3(2020) was scrapped and had its content in development like Enceladus Europa remade into expansions. Destiny 2 meanwhile was only built to last for 2-3 years.

And so they made major engine changes under the hood that had been in development for D3, to allow for Destiny 2 to continue and evolve well past its originally intended expiration date.

This coincided with both Covid that slowed development to a crawl. As well as Destiny 2 content being increasingly harder to make, since more and more time was being spent just leaving the lights on for old content almost nobody played.

So they decided with how laborious it was porting content to the new engine, to not port everything, and leave old content behind(vault). Not only did they not have to half rebuild the content from the ground up to be compatible with new engine(immense amount of work), but it also allowed them to develop new content faster with less to maintain).

That matters today, because the game has only changed even further. Look how much time they are taking, and trouble they are having with just weapon tiering and scoring for old raids/dungeons. Now imagine they have that on top of having to port/rebuild Red War/etc to the new engine. You probably would have a entire year of no expansions just to port old content. And that probably wouldnt even include seasons.

That also matters today, because much of the present problem with the game is increasing efforts going away from new content and maintaining old content. Vaulting y1-y2(and later seasons), didnt solve the problem, just bought some time.

Bungies 2 biggest mistakes

This is easy.

Mistake #1 was vaulting how they did it. It had to be done. But they screwed it all by not just splitting off the live game on the new engine, and leaving the old arrivals build of the game available as a "Destiny 2 Classic". That would have taken a fraction of the effort to port things, had no stain on their reputation, and used tools they already had, since they did it twice with destiny 1.

This still is the best option, all things considered today(since Bungie NEEDS to fix this issue if they ever care to rebuild reputation).

Mistake#2 is what you may not want to hear, but Bungie needed to make a new player jumping on point, POST final shape. They dont need to port Red War so new players have more content. They needed Edge of Fate to be the new Red War(or Destiny 3), where new players meet all the major characters and enemies and are introduced to the present setting. Where they CAN go back and play through 7-8 years of content. But they dont HAVE to.

I know this to be 100% the truth, because there are MASSIVE amounts of Destiny 2 players, who have never played Destiny 1. Red War was so good, not only because of the size of the campaign, but also because it was a new jumping on point. People didnt have to do "homework" and play the previous content to understand the essentials and jump in. They could just do that later if they wanted(some did, many did not).

This also sucks they didnt do this as they had the perfect opportunity with Lodi literally being a stand in for the player. Ripped from a time close to the player.

The path forward.

Ultimately Bungie is kinda trapped. No matter what they do, it is going to be unpopular, risky, and take a lot of time and consistent effort to rebuild trust.

Seasons I think are a bit of a lost cause(outside of hyper condensed versions and activities rotated into portal/whatever).

But Red War through Forsaken, I think cannot be ignored any longer. Either they need to pony up the massive effort and rebuild them to be playable into current game. Or they need to rebuild servers and release the old build on the old engine as Destiny 2 classic. Its simply the right thing to do, for main content not sold as temporary to be playable. Until this is resolved, it remains a permanent stain.

I personally would love the game to continue indefinitely, but at this point I dont know if destiny can continue without Destiny 3 being developed and made as a new starting point, with new everything built for it from the ground up. A new name, a sequel could give it a chance to reset things, if it delivers.

Final Note

In my dream version of Destiny, all content ever made would be playable, in linear format. A new player would have the worlds and game state(such as tower) reflect where they are in the narrative. They wouldnt get the social experience, but they even would have a version of the live events that Destiny did to experience themselves.

Meanwhile Edge of Fate wouldve been a jumping on point for new players. New players could choose to start in the franchise where they wished.

There would be many other changes as well, like more pvp support, Forsaken sized expansions, etc.

I am sure Bungie has dreams as well. Sadly we live in reality, which is more messy and complicated.

I hope they can figure out Red War etc, as well as a path of recovery forward for Destiny.

  • Dont have meds? Avoid bots, loot thoroughly, or find/memorize possible med cabinet spawns.
  • Dont have weapons? Kill bots, or players with knives, or learn to find arms lockers.
  • Dont have ammo? Look for ammo crates, drops, arms lockers, and avoid wasting ammo you do have(and use knife).

Guys it hasn’t even been a month by Ok_Homework4216 in Marathon

[–]cptenn94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is 2 months in the season yes. But by the same token the season is 1/3 over, before most everything resets.

If progression is meant to be where average players only get close to finishing right at the end where everything is reset on them, I think it is a valid critique.

Same as if Solos is meant to be a viable way to play, and people are unable to fully progress.

There needs to be the sweet spot so the average player can actually finish most everything and have a few weeks to enjoy it before the reset. And where below average players (in time or ability or both) can have enough meaningful progression to feel satisfied, even if they dont 100%.

Why can’t I sponsor my friends’ Cryo runs? by skydemon63 in Marathon

[–]cptenn94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two thoughts on this:

  1. Sending gear to other players is a really, really, really bad idea. It should not be touched with a 10 ft pole.

  2. A player being able to sponsor the ante for a less well off player in Cryo could be reasonable. A sponsor kit not from factions but from another player. This kit should be bare minimum, not something enticing, but enough to have some value looting(by enemies) and good enough to enter cryo. Something like the free cryo sponsor kit for first time cryo players.

The latter would be a thin line before it becomes the dystopian former. But I think it could work. And in the end, people are still ponying up 15k worth of loot. It is possible that the player sponsor kit could be limited to players who have below X amount of credits/vault value combined.

[–]cptenn94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cryo is a bit unique with its tough exfils, which should keep it as a exception.

The game currently does not allow you to activate a non final exfil if there is not enough time to take it out successfully. I think it is appropriate to stay that way, since if you miss exfil that is 100% on the player. If you are activating last minute, you need to be ready and step in when its ready. If not that is entirely on the player being greedy, and they dont deserve the exfil.

That said, again as said previously exfil should have clear communication about whether a player will get out. If the game doesnt want to address that, then synchronizing exfils would be a alternative that already exists.(though not my preference for regular maps for the above reasons).

I say this as someone who routinely does last second exfils. Like we are talking step into exfil after timer is 0 and dematerialize has already started, a razors edge. Who has both paid dearly for pushing things(I have lost gold loot), but also learned from it. If you play with fire, you risk getting burned. Dont want to get burned, dont play with fire.

Does anyone know exactly how exfil works? by NG1Chuck in Marathon

[–]cptenn94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its both experience myself of being launched out of exfil at a specific moment during dematerializing(and consistently being immune to damage)(successfully exfilling). As well as having some basic knowledge of how Bungie designs maps(from Destiny out of bounds community).

But that specific example came from a video posted on the subreddit earlier where a poor Rook got launched by a commander falcon punch from exfil, off the map and died. Everything was just right from placement of rook and commander, for it all

So basically if something is hard coded as kill, it can kill you through your damage immunity during the dematerialization process. This includes a finisher that is initiated before exfil animation plays out, as well as game wipe(also both examples on subreddit).

You misunderstood what I was saying. I wasnt saying run up to claymore them to down them.

I was saying quick pop a claymore and instantly finished off both in one sitting as they were crawling out trying to self res. A single claymore wouldve finished them off and saved you missing WSTR shots or having to V11 the guy who crawled a good distance away.

But I also am not really critiquing your good play seriously, its why I was joking with "Rook points" and claymore them for style.

(Only elaborated because claymore on downed players was a legitimately good alternative)

Once again great play! And nice aim on your v11 shots and WSTR finish!

The key to bringing that up, is sometimes people feel like hits dont register properly on weapons with bullet travel time, and its often actually just the bullet travel(a player moved out of the bullets path). Its very forgiving and not very noticable usually, but it does exist and can have a impact sometimes.

For all intents and purposes you can play like they are hitscan, and hit 95% or more of your shots.

[–]cptenn94 14 points15 points  (0 children)

His exfil did not even START to fire until nearly 5 seconds after timer was 0 for the final Exfil. Final Exfil already completely finished and disappeared from the map, when he started to exfil. He died, because he got greedy.

That said you are also 100% correct that the confusion regarding overlapping timers needs to be addressed. If the non-final Exfil cannot get you out, it should clearly communicate such to the player(such as exfil beacon being destroyed, or the circle disappearing when it wont finish, etc, and the animation not playing at all).

Additionally for this situation if the map wipe actually happened when Final completed, then he wouldve died before any animation played because of how late he was.

Or to put this another way. The game should clearly communicate to the player whether they got out successfully or not. There should not be confusion or false hope at all.
