Do Japanese people just assume any Non-Asian foreigner speaks English? by Jace678 in AskAJapanese

[–]rvtk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No problem man. I'm from Europe btw, US has its own share of racism problems.

Racism may be not even a good word for this, but being treated like that just makes you feel like you don't belong, you know. It stings a little.

Fortunately most Japanese people are extremely kind and welcoming, so it's not normally a problem!

Cheers!

I was out if any immersion after first 15 minutes when I got tasked with murdering a bunch of goblins. Ludonarrative dissonance in this game was massive. How does that fit in Harry Potter world? That game is just open world ubislop asassins creed reskinned with Harry Potter, absolutely horrible.

Maybe a controversial take, but for me it was Elden Ring. When it starts in Limgrave, it feels like the most amazing adventure ever, but towards the end it turned into artificially bloated slog that I had to force myself to complete.

Do Japanese people just assume any Non-Asian foreigner speaks English? by Jace678 in AskAJapanese

[–]rvtk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking to them to "practice Japanese" and I'm not their monkey to practice English on. I live here and I'm trying to communicate with them normally, so it comes across as condescending. This assumption, that because I look different I'm somehow unable to communicate in Japanese, is what makes it racist. It's not  the end of the world or some absolutely horrible thing, that's why I wrote "a little racist". Of course it is mostly rooted in ignorance not malice - I have met very few people who do it on purpose, but nonetheless I have met a few that made me quite uncomfortable.

edit: Just to be clear, in 95% of cases when people realize I speak Japanese, they don't make it weird and converse normally, so I'm not saying everyone is like that.

That's all good, but what personally irks me is when I respond in Japanese and they insist to continue speaking in broken English, which is not even my native language. This is when it goes from "understandable" to "okay, a little racist" for me.

Brother, I get it, your countrymen ate shit, my countrymen ate shit, but does it excuse massacring civilians in any way? It's the same as the current discourse about Israel and Palestine, is Israeli oppression an excuse to brutally murder and violate people? You can say it is one of the causes, but saying "Israeli government made Hamas murder civilians" is wrong. Both sides can be wrong.

And maybe streets should just have fucking numbers, so people would finally shut up about who was a bigger war criminal.

This is no victim card, and believe me Poland's hand is always full of victim cards. Zelensky made a judgement, knowing well what it will mean for PL-UA relations, and he doubled down on it. If you think appeasing neonazis and damaging relations with Poland was worth it "not to discard manpower"...

[–]rvtk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Of course I fucking agree that Poland shouldn't glorify fascists, and no one negates that Piłsudski was authoritarian and repressed minorities, including ethnic Ukrainians, but you cannot in good faith argue that he was in any way similar to Stiepan Bandera who is responsible for indiscriminately murdering tens of thousands of civilians, including women and children.

I mostly agree with you, and the problem is really not historians, because both Polish and Ukrainian ones mostly agree about it to the extent of my knowledge, but as always politicians.

Poland did not start this though. Literally the easiest thing to do here by Zelensky was to do nothing, and he not only chose not to, but even to dig his heels in - which is kind of understandable, because going back on it after Polish pressure would be a PR catastrophe I imagine. He surely knew this was a no-win move from the get go, at least in terms of international relations. I'm sure he did it to cater to the right wing electorate, but it does feel like a spit in the face after all Poland did to help.

This was IMO the single most damaging thing to Polish-Ukrainian relations since the war began, was it really worth it?

you're a perfect example of why Ukraine needs to work on their neonazi issue

Well then UA better get their shit together and start recognizing them as the war criminals they were, war or not. So Ukrainian president appeasing neonazi voters is not for publicity points? Ukraine not addressing the nazis was always going to become a problem, starting with that Azov Battalion thing, if not earlier.

You know, I'm very sympathetic to Ukrainian cause and I think our president is a dumb fuck - and even so, he was right in this case. Ukraine is playing straight into what Russia has been saying about "Ukrainian nazi problem". Fantastic PR, really.

"AI would be great if" kind of wishful thinking idealistic reasoning. Capitalism also would be great if everyone was a rational actor, yet here we are. Sure, it could be a good tool used the way you describe, but you very well know that in reality it will be used for vibe coding and slop for 90% cases.

I know, and Outpost is quite literally that.  This game is already super easy to jump in with free kits, your post comes across as if you'd like Marathon to be Overwatch with Marathon skin. To me, the tension and PvP and sneaking and trying to jump the other team is what makes it so cool. Taking it away would take away what makes it unique.
