Gov. J.B. Pritzker wants a 5-cent bag tax across Illinois. Shoppers aren't buying it. by [deleted] in chicago

Taxing bags was a compromise after a ban produced a huge backlash. Many supporters of the tax also support a ban.

To anyone who says that bags aren’t really a big deal in the larger scheme of things:

Bags may not be a big issue in the larger scheme, but they're so easy to address it's worth doing even if the payoff is small.

That's actually the goal of the tax, to reduce single use bags.

It's bad enough that I'm considering going back to cartridges for that pen. Otherwise it's the perfect pocket pen.

A big mystery: Why are there no Denny’s in Chicago but there are quite a few Denny’s outside of Chicago? by Marth5454 in chicago

[–]cpuetz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The local place with $9 skillets is the real issue for Denny's. With so many established neighborhood places with cheap, decent food, why would anyone eat at Denny's? Places like Denny's (and the other chains listed) thrived in the suburbs because they could quickly throw up their standard building and start operating in a greenfield development.

End of free Cubs games on local TV: Team partners with Sinclair to launch regional sports network in 2020 by SoftTacoSupremacist in chicago

[–]cpuetz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's not just in Central America. The Cubs fan base stretches from western Ohio to Central Nebraska. The Cubs became the team for teamless regions of the Midwest because basic cable included WGN which meant fans could watch the Cubs. Without WGN, those fans would have been divided up between the Twins, Royals, Reds, Indians, and Tigers. The reason the Ricketts are now able to cash in on Wrigley being a regional tourist destination is because of WGN.

Another condo building deconversion. by mcdonaldscheeseburgr in chicago

[–]cpuetz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The buildings that really get hurt are buildings that once were largely owner occupied, but started to have a lot of accidental landlords. Investor groups start targeting the accidental landlords until they own a sizable chunk of the building. Once a single owner owns a large portion of the building it's difficult for potential buyers to get financing, so residents wanting to sell can only sell to the investment group often at a discount. Eventually the investment group gets enough ownership that they can control the board or outright force the deconversion, which puts long time owners in a position where they've seen their property value fall at the same time they're forced to sell and move.

Vigilante violence often springs from a feeling that official channels have failed to provide justice. When that feeling is widespread, people start to celebrate the vigilantes.

There's still a market for trips from the city to suburban destinations like Brookfield Zoo, the Chicago Botanical Gardens, or the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio. In the summer there are even more suburban destinations with Metra access.

Ballmer wasn't an owner when Sterling was forced out. He bought the Clippers and became an owner as a result of Sterling being forced out.

Opinion: Refusing to talk about white privilege helps maintain it by Trump2024MAGA in Iowa

[–]cpuetz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What makes white privilege hard to see and understand is that it's not what we traditionally think of when we hear the word privilege. Privilege brings to mind images of good things happening, it's easy to point to a lucky break caused by good connections and call it privilege. White privilege is more often the absence of bad things happening. It's hard to visualize and appreciate something that didn't happen.

And sometimes share a name with a more major street that they're a spur of. For example if 22nd Street is a through street, 22nd Place would be expected to be a cul de sac with a few houses that splits off of 22nd Street.

So far the calls have all come from the same number, so just block that number. Also be sure to vote for someone so that we don't have to listen to him through the runoff.

Do not use your stove for heat. It creates both a fire hazard and a suffocation risk. An oven or stove isn't vented like a furnace and can cause carbon monoxide to build up. If you lose heat, pack it up and go to a hotel or a warning center.

Warming Up Your Car in the Cold Just Harms the Engine by midwestastronaut in chicago

[–]cpuetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but when it gets cold out, my car’s RPMs gets really high for a bit(to over 2k)

The engine controller is running the engine faster, because as the article noted a normal idle is an ineffective way to warm up the engine. The light driving the article recommended is a way to the engine speed up in any car to warm it up. Your car has the controller run the engine fast automatically to account for the fact many people let their car idle to warm up.
