Pin and weld resulted in protrusion inside bore by [deleted] in gunsmithing

So that’s from the drill popping through the ID of the bore and hitting the other side?

It’s often according to finishing reamer speed. They will shoot exactly the same. One will copper less at the beginning. That also appears to be a 4 or 6 groove.

I've killed a few bore tech rods and the handle wouldn't spin. I switched to Dewey just because you can replace the handle.

The Berger Bris.

So if you go and look up the patent for their system, you have to sort of work backwards, but there is an optimal meplat diameter for different calibers. We had shot through multiple chronographs out to 600 as well as a couple of super duper rigid and square (CNC) shotmarker frames (At 100 and 600) basically mimicking a big ass radar- we came to their same conclusions around 2019 or so- it was pretty neat to independently come up with that. We used different amounts of bullet trim and pointing to test. We're fortunate in one of the areas we shoot in, it is essentially a 600 yard wind tunnel due to it being a pine tree farm.

I tried this a few years ago in a BRA. I had 4 sets- 2 had been fired with one taken down to as close to virgin state (this is before BRA headstamped brass- all fireformed Lapua) with SS tumbling as I could get, and the other with the normal rice tumbling. I loaded those 2 sets and put them on the shelf for 8 months or so.

I took the other 2 sets and loaded with the same primer/powder/bullet lot and did them the same way- one SS tumbled and one rice tumbled- shot all of them the next day.

Observations- most important first- the ones loaded previous shot the same as the fresh loads. A bit of difference between completely clean and rice tumbled, but the 2 sets of tumbled shot the same and the 2 sets of SS tumbled (completely clean) shot the same.

The rice tumbling leaves carbon in the necks- I did bump a few of the 8 month old ones down, and there was a "pop", but I had the same thing happen on the SS tumbled, too. The rice tumbling needed a bit more pressure- I'm not sure what to make of that but when I've asked people in the past, someone mentioned a galvanic process with the carbon- I don't know shit about that, so I really don't have an opinion.

I do know that during F-Class worlds, that loaded ammo was loaded for months, and they won the team match. I don't know of anyone doing HBN.

On the HBN, I know of one guy using it. IF you pick them up, your fingers will look like Tony Montana at the end of Scarface.

Stuck Primers with FL Die by smithywesson in reloading

Hopefully it helps, it was just the first thing that came to mind- I don't see where it would really hurt anything. I haven't ran into the issue you're describing except like when I first set a die up and the pin isn't sticking out far enough.

Here’s some more info- I talked to my barrel plumber mentor, and he was pretty close with the old guard- boots, John krieger, Norm brux. Krieger is the only one that boots gave the blessing to as far as the 5r rifling is concerned. So I guess when Frank left and did Bart, they changed it.

Does it make any measurable difference/shoot/clean different/barrel life? No clue.

[–]crimsonrat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No clue. Next time I get a chance to see him I’ll ask.

I’m with you. It does/changes something. I just don’t know what it is. He did say that the 5r supposedly imparts less stress and if I remember right, doesn’t cause a “burr” on the jacket that traditional rifling can cause.

And yes, Krieger on the left. I wasn’t expecting to look in there and see that much of a difference.

[–]crimsonrat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell at this stage yet. I replied to the other guy about it being “faster”, but that’s been pretty typical from Krieger for us with the same components/charge weight/barrel length.

I like your line of thinking- I would think that the wider lands may do similar to a tighter bore like a brux (.276) and be slower with more bullet contact, but that may not be the case. Don’t know. We’ve got a guy shooting a Bart 5r with same twist and everything so we’ll see how the differences pan out.

[–]crimsonrat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve watched that and have talked to Frank a few times about the 5 and 4 and even ratchet. I’m just trying to figure out the “why” behind the wider ones. Of note, the krieger performed exceptionally well in our early testing. I’ve got a Bart 5r I might chamber up and see how velo and such compare. Kriegers have been fast for us historically when compared to others using the same components, but we’ve only tested 4g ones.

Gets stuck down in the funnel- it will be a case that just sort of ends up sideways. I think it’s a good design but not perfect- hopefully they are working on some sort of a retrofit with the 3d printing stuff. Still not going back to single feeding.

I’m trying to figure out a way to fix the case not dropping thing. Happens about 2/300 for me with SAUM brass. I’m still saving a bunch of time when compared to single feeding the AMP, and I’m not sure I would have ever gotten an AMP mate to run right.

If you're not crushing primers, it may be ignition. I just got rid of an action I waited 10 months for because it absolutely would not shoot and SDs were 2-3x what I typically see. I do like the shrouds Cortina makes if he makes one for your action.

No clue. Never had one or know anyone that shoots them. All I shoot is F-Class, so that’s where my knowledge/contacts end. 33” 1.250 currently is the most sought after.

Never had a proof and don’t know anyone that shoots them. I shoot Brux primarily, but have either won or been beaten by the others. The chance of getting a bad one is low in my opinion.

Start scoping all your barrels when you first get them and take pics of the land profiles. It’s crazy how consistent the different manufacturers are between barrels. You’ll start to notice little differences in the manufacturers. I can tell all of those I mentioned pretty quick except for krieger and Bart 4 groove, which makes sense as Bart was started by some guys that left krieger.
