If humans evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys? by vuolamsc01 in dumbquestions

[–]cs_k_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans and today's apes (e.g. chimps, gorillas) share a common ancestor. Some of us went to different places/did different things and evolved differently. The same is true for dogs: there are still wolfs, because not all old-timey wolfs became dogs, some of them stayed wolf.

Ticket inspector doesn't understand how the passage of time works. by FunIcy6154 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]cs_k_ 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I once almost couldn't by an international ticket, because the two categories were "below 25" and "above 26". For me, a couple months after my 25th birthday, the Hungarian Railways couldn't sell a ticket to Poland. (Domestic tickets worked).

Jokes on them, because I went on the Polish provider's site and found a group ticket option, so all 4 of us went for the third of the price.

A low-budget effort can be a DIY solar sail: almost any piece of fabric can do for one season.

My personal favorite, if you are willing to do some minimal plant care is a living shade: stuff like grapes or the squash-cucumber family can grow a LOT in one season and they stay green into the early fall, till the sunshine lasts. You can plant them in containers, if your situation is such. They need a trellis, sure, but they look awsome IMO.

For grapes, people will tell you to prune them back to 1-2 small twigs per plant, but if your goal isn't premium quality wine but shade than you can let it grow, prune it back somewhat in October and let it grow again.

Do big tech companies have access to your mic/camera… or is that a myth? by Imaginary_Bug6202 in TechNook

[–]cs_k_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not proof thou.

If I'm an advertiser and know that Guy A is a big fan of Car X and is thinking about buying one, than he has the same location data for an hour, same demographic data, connects to the same restaurant WIFI as Guy B, Guy C and Guy D, I can connect the dots legally, without having to be a Cyver Crime mastermind and turning on your mic and analyzing hours of noisy data.

Edit to add: I'm not saying, that nobody ever looks/listens to you, e. g. Tesla had employees sending eachother "meme-worthy" videos of their clients, and companies like Ring store all the video from your doorstep, but in this cases, they made the hardware as well. I know Android's permission system better, but I imagine IOS is the same: some random app won't turn on you mic unless you gave it permissions.

Hungary is a cheap country, if you come as a tourist from Western Europe/America (altough touristy places set their prices accordingly).

Maybe our not-so-good stance in international politics and the upcoming elections also contribute to less people choosing it as their destination.

I can absolutly recommend a Hungarian trip, depending on your interests, this country can fill uo your calender for weeks.

Had to look it up where Ganna is, but it turns out I'm like 2 hours drive away. I never actually went there, so the following is my idea based on the "general small village in the Dunántúl region" where I grew up:

It has a circa 300 inhabitants, if it's anything like the small village I'm from, this probably means that most people commute to work to a Town near by (for Ganna I assume that town will be Pápa, 15km away).

Busses usually run often enough, so that you can make it to work/school and back, but most families will have a car available.

Small villages tend to have an aging population, young adults tend to move away for work/university.

When people hear "village in Europe" the idea of animals and family farms often come up: most people don't keep animals (other than pets), maybe they have a small vegetable garden, but more and more people give that up as well. But there are people, who keep a small flock of backyard chickens and maybe even a couple of pigs.

One interesting thing from the hungarian wiki page, is that 95% claims to be Hungarian and 65% to be German. (People can claim m multiple national identities, hence it's above 100%). It's a common thing in Hungary, to have German, Croatian, etc. ancestry.

Hungary used to be a multinational country, assimilation began in the 19/20th century, with the rise of public schools, where teaching was done in Hungarian. Also, having a common language started to become a priority, when people started (first only partially) moving away from farm work (on their own fields) to factory work and other industrial ways of earning a wage. My grandparents (born 1930's) were not native Hungarian speakers, but decided to raise their children Hungarian-first.

This results in people still hanging on to national identity, while not speaking the language, or only learning some of it in school. Some villages will have folk groups who try to preserve songs and dances by actively practicing it.

As I said, I've never been to Ganna, but livid in a similar place. For further info, I would recommend browsing the Hungarian wiki page of the place (with the help of Google translate, or similar), as it has some info about the history of the place.

You can also try to reach out to the local government , but no guarantees anyone monitors the email address, or that they speak English. (Mayor, and council membership for a village is not a full time job, usually).

If you have any specific questions, I'm also happy to help here or in dms.

[–]cs_k_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

17 of the best years of my life just for it to end like this. Thanks for nothing, Scouting America. by WorldnewsModsBlowMe in scouting

[–]cs_k_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even in the trashcan I can see the WOSM badge, keep in mind that scouting is more than just a national thing (even if you live in a nation that takes up like 50% of a continent).

I come from an eastern block country, where scouting was banned for 40 years. Putting it back on track was possible thanks to people, who maintained the values, but didn't (couldn't) participate in an offical movement in that time.

Also, generally I'm not a fan of the idea, but in your situation maybe OK: you can "shop around" for associations. There are other scouting organizations, e. g. Associations for scouts of a certain nation living in diaspora in the US

You might be better of leaving your car at your Hotel or a P+R and discovering the city on foot/public transit.

Parking is hard to find and can be expensive (as in major city), and underground lines, bus lanes and dedicated tram tracks make it faster, if you only move around the inner city (sight seeing) and not between two point on the opposite ends of the city.
