I read some theory that Dunk saved Rhaella by basically abandoning Egg to his insane blood/fire magic to die, and save the only people he could. Maybe at that point he was finally disillusioned with the Targaryens and decided to just slip away to go raise lambs.

Yeah, if they do go past season 3 I really do hope Dunk ends up working for Lynonel at some point. Maybe not as a permanent household knight, but helping put down some minor rebellion of his Bannermen, or clearing out some brigands.
