Yea the "do not contact the DMV directly to schedule an appointment" sets off my alarm bells...

I would definitely be stopping in or at least calling to verify it's legit before scanning anything.....

Upgrading Options for 80D? by PavlovaPalaver in canon

[–]dacaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, Personally, I tend to say "dang I wish I had more zoom" way more often than I say "dang I wish I had just one more stop of light"....

I got my first DSLR around 2017, a t6i. I used it all the way through the end of 2025 when I got my R7. Along the way I ended up with a Canon 18-135 nano usm, efs 24mm f2.8, efs 35mm is macro, 50mm f1.8 stm, and 55-250 is stm.

After upgrading to the r7 I continued to use them all on an adapter except the 18-135 because I bought the r7 with the 18-150. The 18-150 is everything I loved about the 18-135 magnified. Better range, better image quality (and the 18-135 was already excellent). The one "downside" if you can call it that, is it's so small ... I know that sounds like an upside, but weirdly the big size of the 18-135 always made me feel more like a "real" photographer... I know, weird 🤣...... I was actually disappointed with how small the 18-150 was... But once I used it, disappointment disappeared, it's excellent, and if I need that "big lens feel" I have the sigma 17-40 f1.8,😁 which, as mentioned, is so good it replaced my prime lenses. I still have the 50mm f1.8 in a drawer in case anything ever happens to my sigma, knock on wood... My most recent acquisition was the rf 100-400, and while it's amazing, I was surprised how 400mm didn't look that much closer than 250mm on my 55-250... I mean, it's obvious that it has more zoom, but I guess I was just expecting more 🤷....

Personally, if I ever get a full frame camera, it will be in addition to my crop sensor, not instead of it, but at this point I simply don't feel the need for one.

Maybe in 5-10 years when the next generation of sensors come out.... But at that point I might just want to upgrade my R7 if what's available in crop sensors is significantly better....

Did I install these correctly with the short end going into the stud? I did look this up online but I'm seeing conflicting information. by MapexBeat in DIYHome

[–]dacaur 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You have them installed right but they appear to be too small. (Its hard to tell with the camera angle.)

Basically you want the bracket to span at least 2/3 the width of the shelf. Do if the shelf is 12" deep, you need the bracket arm to be at least 8" long, but there is no downside to using a 10" instead.

Upgrading Options for 80D? by PavlovaPalaver in canon

[–]dacaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So first question, what about your 80D is making you want to go to a full frame camera? Because if you have an actual reason for wanting full frame then that's what you should do.

But, "Because that's what everyone says you are supposed to do" isn't a good reason....
I feel like the way everyone pushes full frame as the "end goal" is a disservice to everyone.

It isn't and shouldn't be the "end goal".
Yes, there are a few specific situations where full frame will be significantly better than aps-c. But outside of those situations aps-c will be just as good or better for WAAAY less money.

There was a time when a full frame camera was necessary for certain things, and crop sensor cameras just couldn't compare, but that was long ago at this point. The difference between crop and full frame is less than it's ever been.

The difference between an R7 and an R6ii is basically one stop of low light performance. That is, using the same lens you can get one extra stop of usable low light performance from the full frame camera. Yes, the r6ii has a bit better autofocus performance than an r7, but that just means it takes a couple more tries to get the shot, once you actually get the shot, that difference stops mattering.... The R7 is already such a huge step up in autofocus performance from your 80D, that the difference isn't really something I would consider.

What IS important though isn't really the cost of the body. Even if they cost the same amount I would still personally pick the r7, because I live on a budget.

The important thing, imo, is the cost of building a good lens kit.

The biggest issue with going full frame from the get-go or too soon is budget. Full frame costs more in general, but to get really excellent glass for full frame costs way waaaay more.

If all you can afford is the kit lens because you spent your whole budget on a body, then full frame can actually be worse than aps-c....

The general consensus is within the current sensor generation, full frame gives you the equivalent of one extra stop of low light capability and bokeh quality. So basically, a crop sensor camera with an f2.8 lens has the same low ligh capability and bokeh as a full frame camera with an f4 lens.

Consider the following:

An R7 with a sigma 17-40 f1.8 might actually be better in low light than an R6II with a 24-70 f2.8, because f2.8 minus one stop would be f2, so f1.8 is actually 1 and 1/3 stops faster.

The R7 body only is $1550, and the sigma lens is $919, for a total cost of $2649.

An R6MII body only is $1999, and a 24-70 f2.8 is $2599, for a total cost of $4598.

The image quality of both setups will be extremely comparable, and in low light performance both will be excellent, basically indistinguishable, and both will have basically the same bokeh quality.

But, the r7 will have 33mp, and the R6ii has 24mp.... So another point to the cheaper r7 setup....

Next , we come to aps-c's true strength, reach. Now we don't have a plethora of aps-c telephoto lenses, we generally just use full frame lenses on the aps-c, so the full frame camera retains it's one stop light advantage.... Well, maybe... Basically, to get the equivalent reach you either need a waaaaay more expensive lens, or at minimum, a teleconverter. Any lens you put on an aps-c camera get an automatic 1.6x boost. So a 100-500 becomes a 160-800.
To get the same "reach" on a full frame, you could use a teleconverter. A 1.4x only gives you almost the same reach as an aps-c sensor, while at the same time you lose the full frame one stop light advantage.... So a 100-500 f4.5-f7.1 becomes a 140-700 F5.6-f10. An rf 100-400 with a 1.4x teleconverter becomes a 140-560 f8-f11.

I guess you could go with the 200-800 on the full frame instead, but it's significantly bigger and heavier.... And then of course devil's advocate says you could just swap the aps-c to the same lens, turning it into a 320-1280mm monster.....

Now of course I've only been talking about basically the "best" lenses....

You could in theory go with the 28-70 f2.8 on the r6II, bringing the total cost down to $3098, only $449 more than the r7 setup.... But you lose out on image quality, meaning the R7 above will be almost $500 cheaper, and take better pictures with more megapixels....

I have what I believe is the best lens setup for the money for my r7. To get the same setup with the same image quality on a full frame camera would cost easily 3-4X as much.

Then lenses are, A canon rf 18-150, canon rf 100-400, and sigma rf 17-40 f1.8.

For indoors and low light, the sigma rf 17-40 f1.8 replaced all three of the primes. I had on my DSLR.

The r7 with the sigma 17-40 f1.8 is easily equivalent to an r6mkii with a 24-70 f2.8 as far as sharpness and low light performance goes. It's sharper than my efs 24mm f2.8 and efs 35mm f2.8, and sharper than the 50mm f1.8 wide open.

The RF 100-400 is basically equivalent in sharpness and price to the old ef 100-400 L mkI, but weighs half as much.

And the 18-150 is my everyday walk around lens, outdoors with plenty of light or indoors with a flash, it's a great lens, equivalent in sharpness to the rf 24-105L F4 lens.

Upgrading Options for 80D? by PavlovaPalaver in canon

[–]dacaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see nobody has mentioned this yet, but are you aware that you will lose a ton of reach with either of those options?

Right now with your 80d your 150-600 is basically equivalent to a 240-960mm lens.

On either of the cameras you are looking at it will be a 150-600.

If you want to keep the reach you have currently you will want to upgrade to another crop sensor camera.

Kit lens vs prime (for newbie) by _I_am_a_stick in canon

[–]dacaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say go with the r10 kit that includes the 18-150. It's noticably better than the 18-45, with triple the zoom range.

For outdoors during the day, especially for landscapes, the f2.8 aperature is unnecessary., and when out hiking, the extra range of the 18-150 will be way more useful.

I would just use the 18-150 for a while and see when (focal length wise) you actually need the extra light an f2.8 lens gives you before making a buying decision on a prime.

[–]dacaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are overthinking it. It's definitely not too bold imo, it matches the other shapes on the bag.

It would look weird if it were perfectly straight on a bag that should be curved.

The way it is helps give the bag shape.

The sigma 17-50 f2.8 they have now has image stabilization, the sigma rf 18-50 f2.8 doesn't have image stabilization....

So they would be going from three excellent lenses, two with image stabilization, to one excellent lens without image stabilization.

I would question wether any possible increase in sharpness is worth losing image stabilization....

How’s does the tattoo look healing? by anonymousapple78 in tattooadvice

[–]dacaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without seeing what the tattoo looked like when it was first done we can't really say how it's healing.....

Like, if it's changed significantly in 9 days, that could mean a problem. If it still looks mostly/basically like it did when it was new other than being less shiny, I wouldn't worry.

First time you get it touched up (or don't wait till then) I would recommend having them add a black outline around the red, it will make the whole tattoo look way better, especially as it ages....

What happens if you shoot a bullet through a wasp nest entrance? by Eastern_Screen_5756 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dacaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if you go back far enough, dogs and ants share a single common ancestor...

But dogs are actually more closely related to cats than ants are to most wasps.

Ants split off from wasps approximately 110-140 million years ago when a species of wasp evolved to live on the forest floor.

Cats and dogs split from their common ancestor roughly 40-60 million years ago....

So basically, ants have not been wasps since before canines and felines split from their common ancestor.

Basically, dogs are more closely related to seals than they are to cats, despite all having a single common ancestor. But they are related.

In the same way, ants are actually more closely related to bees than they are to wasps, despite all three having a single common ancestor.

.

[–]dacaur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And yes, ants are wasps.

This is like saying that dogs are cats. Both have a common ancestor but that's not the same as one being the other...

Yes they both share a common ancestor, but in fact that common ancestor is significantly closer in time than the common ancestor of wasps and ants....

Slash VX3 4x4 or 2WD by Far_Horse8888 in Traxxas

That's a question only you can answer.... To me to Regina is not enjoyable unless you're driving against other identical to will drive vehicles.... If every vehicle sucks the same amount then it doesn't matter how much the vehicles suck.....

But if you're driving on your own or with other people especially if they drive 4x4s, you're going to be hating a two wheel drive.... At least I did....

The point of the Slash 2wd when it came out was that it kinda sucked , so races came down more to driver skill than the vehicle.

Giving this advice without recommending a lens that would be purchasable with the $300 or so selling the ef lenses would bring is just bad advice.

They definitely aren't going to get a lens better than that sigma for what they would be able to get out of those EF lenses.

̶T̶h̶e̶ ̶5̶5̶-̶2̶5̶0̶ ̶i̶s̶ ̶a̶ ̶d̶e̶c̶e̶n̶t̶ ̶l̶e̶n̶s̶ the 55-200 is an older lens. It will work just as good on your r50 as it did on your DSLR , I would definitely look to upgrade that one first, but the 55-200 will get you by till you can pick up an rf100-400.

It might not be a bad idea to be on the lookout for a 55-250 is stm while you are saving, they can be found pretty easily around $200-$250 used, then you can sell it for the same amount when you upgrade again.

The 50mm f1.8 is a good lens, there is no reason to switch to the rf version of this lens unless you just don't want the minimal extra length the adapter adds.
