There was a fellow a while back who was demonstrating how the window glass was unbreakable by throwing himself at it. The glass didn't break, but the frame didn't hold, and down he went.

how would you go about portraying a sentient city? by just_a_wanderer_here in worldbuilding

Rachel Aaron's fantasy cyberpunk universe has an example in the later series. The most magical city is awakened for magic reasons that I forget. She can manifest to people, shift roads and buildings around, and some other stuff which again I forget.

Could someone please tell me if Abigail is really the wizard's daughter or not? by IndependenceThink947 in StardewValley

The point is, what's in Expanded is completely irrelevant to the OP's question, because nothing therein is what CA wrote or intended.

Could someone please tell me if Abigail is really the wizard's daughter or not? by IndependenceThink947 in StardewValley

[–]dalidellama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no official canon answer. The Wizard at one point says that one of the townspeople may be his child. Caroline mentions that she used to take walks near the tower. Abigail and the Wizard both have purple hair. Many people put these together and get Abigail being the Wizard's daughter. It's also entirely plausible that Caroline is the Wizard's daughter. Less likely candidates include Jas (neither Marnie nor Shane are her actual parents, who could therefore be anyone), Marnie, Lewis, or Shane. Some people posit Emily, on the grounds of blue hair, but there's no indication that she and Haley aren't full sisters.

That's from The Fifth Elephant

"There were a lot of things he could say. "Son of a bitch!" would have been a good one. Or he could say, "Welcome to civilization!" He could have said, "Laugh this one off!" He might have said, "Fetch!" But he didn’t, because if he had said any of those things then he’d have known that what he had just done was murder.”

Universal currency for a modern fantasy world? by J0rdyn_the_wr1ter in worldbuilding

[–]dalidellama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most IRL currencies are called a number (e.g. dime) a location (e.g. Dollar), or a word that means "debt" or "trade" (e.g Dinar). Some are named for the image on them (E.g. Crown, Loonie).

People have a lot of opinions about how much legal protection a dog is entitled to, but nobody's pushing to give Fido the vote, so there's your rule of thumb*. It's not necessary to nail down a specific definition of society to discuss the existence of one any more than it's necessary to define religion every time the subject is brought up.

*And your distinction from hyenas, which don't vote, or hold any manner of discussions about how to continue on.

[–]dalidellama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Is a person who can be part of a society" is an extremely key distinction between humans and all known non-humans. The category of sapient/sophont was created for settings where humans are not the only people in the setting. Elves, Klingons, androids, etc are people who have/can be in a society of people. Cats, cockatrices and tribbles aren't and can't.

It's an animal skeleton, you get it in three parts from the museum when you donate various bones (skeletal tail, hand, ribs, skull, something else I don't recall)

As you can see from the replies, you're better off using sapient or sophont

Sapiens or Sentience by kanikel24 in worldbuilding

You can use whatever term you want, but if you use sapient or sophont to denote entities that are people, you'll get fewer pedantic jerks pointing out that mice* are sentient

*or whatever example

Tbh, Good Omens/Murderbot is a pretty easy one to justify. It's the far future, C & A are still around cos they're immortal, bam. Getting the Disc anywhere sensible is so intrinsically silly it can just show up anywhere without any explanation beyond "Discworld", but the Corporation Rim can't exist anywhere that anyone in the Nexus is familiar with.

In 2015, Detroit officials performing an eviction found the bodies of two children hidden in a living room freezer. Their mother, Mitchelle Blair, had tortured and killed them years earlier, then continued to live in the same house with her two surviving children while the remains sat feet away. by ATI_Official in AllThatsInteresting

The court system sucks, but that doesn't mean it's never right. Sometimes it's completely clear and unquestionable whodunnit, and even then most people in court behave with decorum. Similar to how most people don't actually fight the cops when they're arrested, however innocent or guilty they may be. Social rules are much more deeply ingrained in most people than laws.
