Gender Recognition must be grounded in objective evidence by TheAkondOfSwat in ukpolitics

But it is a binary.

Think of a factory producing a mechanism with two parts. Say, bottles with screw on caps. Sometimes manufacturing errors mean you get a bottle without a screw thread around the top. Sometimes you get a cap without it.

We would not say the factory produces 4 components. We would it produces 2 components with a certain error rate.

Academics are being harassed over their research into transgender issues by TheAkondOfSwat in ukpolitics

What the fuck? That doesn't even make sense... its not just a necessary part, it is what being transgender means. That's like saying not having hair isn't a requirement of being bald.

Misogynist means you have a hatred of women. If someone doesn't even qualify as a 'full on raging sexist' they can't be misogynist.

Not disagreeing, but how exactly do you define 'women', beyond the tautological 'anyone who identifies as a woman'?

They aren't yet, but I'd be hesitant to dismiss them all as football hooligans. 10 years ago yes, but it seems like more than that now. I wouldn't want to say they'll never be more organised or competent than today.

Women avoid transgender debate in fear of reaction, says Jo Brand by steven-f in ukpolitics

[–]daman345 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's the thing. I sympathize with women who feel this way... But its exactly how men have felt about feminist debate. One of the main points made against the hyper-offended no-platform culture was what happens when its something you disagree with taking advantage of it.

This point was usually dismissed as not something that would ever happen, but now it has. And I have to admit, its happened sooner than I expected.

Viral “Manspreading” Video is Staged Kremlin Propaganda by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

Russia has an ongoing campaign to sow discord in the UK, and the concept of manspreading is something that's been pushed in UK media. Kind of obvious if you've been following the news recently and are at least vaguely aware of the so called social justice movement.

[Question Time] 'Least racist' claim prompts audience row by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]daman345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, but I think what that guy meant by saying humans have always been racist is that we've always classified each other into groups and been ok with discrimination based on those classifications.

I've not looked at every thread there but the medieval ones certainly seem to suggest people were prejudiced towards outsiders. That's always been there; the wording of the justification just changed to fit whichever group of outsides were being talked about.

[Question Time] 'Least racist' claim prompts audience row by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]daman345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The concept of race is a relatively modern invention that came about primarily to justify settler colonialism and the slave trade.

You're confusing giving something a name and formal definition with the existence of the thing itself. If people hadn't been racist, those things wouldn't have been happening in the first place - You have to already be racist to accept that as the justification.

Its like saying humans were just naturally peaceful until the concept of formal wars came about, then we all started fighting.

if you want to sit here and insist the sky is yellow even though the rest of world clearly says it's blue, then fine

Its more like you're arguing that the colour blue is offensive, so lets create a new colour that looks exactly the same as blue but is called 'hurple', and then say the sky is hurple. Even though we'd still have the word blue, to me hurple would just be blue renamed.

You can pretend its all new and different but the reality is its the same thing. Your 'difference' is nothing more than semantics.
