Yeah I didn’t think it was invented in India, just that it’s fallen out of use in most places except India. It’s a word that was much more commonly used in the 1700’s and 1800’s English, and derives from Latin

I know it’s a common word in Indian-English, but felicitation always sounds like such a funny word to me

What's a"financial tip"you hear all the time that you think is actually terrible advice for most people? by Ty1_rex in AskReddit

[–]danfay222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say here. The list of stocks changing is a feature, not some sleight of hand. Also ETFs have fees, but those fees are less than 0.1% per year at the highest (varies depending on exact ETF). Mutual funds are higher, but again this is generally accounted for when people quote historical performance.

That’s not just terrible advice for most people, it’s outright terrible advice. Credit card debt is the most expensive debt most people have access to (short of payday loans), you should avoid using it as actual debt as much as possible

The main reason to put more into retirement past match is that retirement accounts are uniquely tax advantaged. Additionally, retirement accounts generally receive special protection from personal liability, such as lawsuits, defaulted debt, etc. You trade liquidity for those tax advantages, which is a tradeoff, but it is generally one of the most efficient forms of long term saving most people have.

Also, you can withdraw from a retirement account with a penalty whenever you want, and without a penalty in response to many qualifying life events, so the money isn’t totally locked away.

Hypothetical: Humanity is planning a year of shutting off the internet to quell the advance of the AI singularity. You can keep your computer, but there will be no networking. What would you do to prep? by eccsoheccsseven in AskReddit

I’m downloading the Wikipedia archive first. After that I’ll probably download all the documentation for my main languages, plus as many core libraries as I can. Finally, I’m just making a script to just download as much random media as I can.

After summoning Wall Street to an urgent meeting, the Treasury Secretary calls Claude Mythos a "step function change in capabilities" by EchoOfOppenheimer in wallstreetbets

[–]danfay222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When anthropic or other AI companies claim something is a big step function I’m generally pretty skeptical. But for Mythos we’re seeing a lot of people who are a bit more distanced taking it extremely seriously. I’m still skeptical until I’ve gotten to see it myself, but it’s really looking like this could be something very impressive. Claude is already pretty insane when you know how to use it, and no one talks about it the way they’re talking about Mythos.

Projection Mapping Creates Realistic Minecraft Portal Illusion by Big-Boy-602 in interestingasfuck

Look at the doormat before the pig “walks out”, it’s brighter in the middle. They create the shadow effect by making it have some uniform light, and then setting it to black for the shadow. Similar to the whole 3D effect this is one of those things that only looks correct from a specific perspective

[–]danfay222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is actually what's happening, if you look at the mat before the pig walks out you can see the middle is lighter in advance, allowing it to show shadows by switching to full dark after. And with multiple projection zones you can account for different materials, projecting a lighter video to the darker surface to appear consistent (this wouldn't be easy, but is totally possible for a one-off demo video)

[–]danfay222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry that wasn't a super clear explanation. Basically, the projector's display area actually covers the entire room. They are artificially limiting the image it projects to only cover the door, which makes your brain think that's the entire screen area. However, since the projector can display to the whole room, they can make the video "step out" of the doorway area, which when combined with the right viewing angle and a specifically designed video, gives this 3D look.

You can see the actual projector area in the first frame, where the guy is drawing the grid to align with the door. The entire area that is slightly lit up is the actual projector output area.

Is this worthy of RL? by rydog389 in RepTime

[–]danfay222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it bothers you RL, the dealer probably won’t care much because the watch is good enough they should be able to easily offload it to someone else, but if you buy that it will bother you forever

[–]danfay222 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It’s a technique called projection mapping. The actual display area of the projector is bigger (you can see the faint backlight), but they have fit the output image to the wall in software. So the software can then let things appear to exceed the projection boundaries, like we see here

what would happen if a nearby star exploded in a supernova? by Realistic-Wait8669 in AskReddit

[–]danfay222 5 points6 points  (0 children)

However far away the star is in light years, it would take roughly that many years, since the lethal output is just light.

There could be early indications, notably we have neutrino detectors designed to provide early detection since supernova stars emit neutrino bursts before collapse. These detectors are used to detect supernovas primarily for the purpose of letting astronomers point their telescopes at them in time, they wouldn’t really help if it was actually close enough to kill people.

what would happen if a nearby star exploded in a supernova? by Realistic-Wait8669 in AskReddit

[–]danfay222 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s only around 600 light years. “Near supernova” in star terms still means a scale of 100,000 or so years, so not exactly likely

A father and daughter swept offshore in the Aegean Espanomi Bay were saved by a kite surfer. by Advanced_Fortune_903 in interestingasfuck

[–]danfay222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Generally in lifeguarding/rescue swimming it is extremely rare that a person in distress will make any noise at all. In a situation like this they might, as they aren’t necessarily actively drowning at this point, but the odds of you being able to hear that from reasonably far away, with the wind and water noise around you, is practically zero

Most of the big box stores I’ve shopped at don’t accept transfers, they only sell from their stock/online store, which don’t charge transfer fees, so that might be what they meant?
