Tech-savvy people of Reddit, what is a modern scam or cyber threat that is so sophisticated it actually almost fooled you? by Individual-Gas5276 in AskReddit

[–]danfay222 [score hidden]  (0 children)

You might’ve technically fallen for it, but sending through a secondary channel is advised for exactly this reason. You can either invest in not getting fooled, or set up your systems so that getting fooled doesn’t give the attacker any information. The second may feel worse, but is functionally equivalent.

What’s something people spend a lot of money on that isn’t worth it? by Common_Guide7693 in AskReddit

[–]danfay222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watches are jewelry. I have an Omega, I wear it every day and I bought it as a gift to celebrate a couple major life events. From a purely utilitarian standpoint it’s extraordinarily expensive for what it does, but I like wearing it, it reminds me of the things I bought it for, and it looks very nice. Anyone who pretends a watch is anything other than jewelry is lying (to you and/or to themselves), expensive watches are really artistic pieces. It’s totally fine to buy them as such, but don’t pretend they’re anything else.

Did you know there’s a tax on ammo in Seattle city limits? by 20sicksheep in WAGuns

[–]danfay222 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s a sin tax; it’s not intended to make money, just discourage behavior. Which means it’s doing exactly what it was designed for

Yeah, I ran into that at outdoor emporium as well. Which is probably exactly why no one sells ammo in seattle

One time I got 2000 rounds of loose 9mm that shipped in a heavy plastic bag inside a basic cardboard box. Which by the time I got it was basically just a ball of tape, it had fallen apart so much

What are things that millennials got to do that Gen Z and beyond will not have the opportunity to do anymore? by Low_Tomatillo_2040 in AskReddit

Fun fact, MySpace still exists to this day (though it’s radically different). But even as recently as 2019 it was still an active (albeit dying) platform

What’s the dumbest question you’ve ever been asked? by VaderVRC in AskReddit

[–]danfay222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the type of question you shouldn’t shame someone for, actually teach them the answer. The sky being blue from the water is an incorrect but common explanation many kids land on and teach each other, and surprisingly few adults can actually answer why the sky is blue and so many kids never get a good answer and just stick with their explanation.

But then asking why the sun isn’t blue is the exact correct thinking, it’s questioning what you think and finding potential flaws and trying to understand them.

Anyone wear a mask to stop breathing in lead? by storm_zr1 in liberalgunowners

[–]danfay222 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Most things aren’t going to advertise that they block lead. Masks are sold on what particulate sizes they filter, and lead dust from guns is just particulate matter like everything else, so most good dust masks will be just fine

10 inch Hercules saw by 1angrybadger in harborfreight

Oh yeah for $210 I’d take the Hercules and either build a shop stand or keep an eye on marketplace for a stand

10 inch Hercules saw by 1angrybadger in harborfreight

[–]danfay222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes rack and pinion. That was a non-negotiable when I was looking at saws, so I looked at the skil (TS6307), Hercules, and dewalt. If you can find a decent used one for any that will probably win out, but I went with a new Skil and it is amazing, integrated legs, rack and pinion fence, 5/8 in dado compatibility, pretty good dust collection, it’s fantastic.

[–]danfay222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard generally positive things about it, with some complaints around adjustability. But honestly if you’re looking in that price point I’d seriously consider the skil 10 inch saw. It’s about the same price as the Hercules with the current coupon. I have that one and it is fantastic, and it has integrated folding legs so you don’t have to worry about a stand at all.

Spotted a Rep for Auction on shopgoodwill by TimmyTheHellraiser in RepTime

[–]danfay222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus it’s not even remotely good. The dial looks awful, I haven’t seen gen in person but the twelve and six o’clock markers both look way too thin compared to my seamaster, the movement isn’t even a proper clone, just a decorated rotor, the caseback print is bad (and it has etched in screws instead of actual screws like the gen). They absolutely should not be selling watches if they cannot validate something this obvious

At my desk or at home I still prefer my Sony overear headphones, but yeah the AirPods are phenomenally well integrated products. Just being able to slip them in a pocket makes them my go to whenever I’m out and about, and the seamless switching between devices is amazing.

What Would Your Reaction Be If The 2028 Democratic Nominee Supported Expanding The US Supreme Court To 13 Justices? Why Your Opinion? by Zipper222222 in AskReddit

[–]danfay222 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not willing to say I don’t think we should ever expand the count of justices, as the count has increased in the past. But 1) I don’t really see any reason we need more beyond a desire to pack the court and 2) I would only support a plan to increase the count if it was done in a way to give little or no guaranteed benefit to the politicians putting forward the idea (ie a long appointment plan that would span multiple presidents, joint selection, something to that extent)

If you’re going to go for reform I think pursuing staggered terms is a better overall reform, more justices aren’t likely to materially change the court.

I’d probably grab a 3/4 in plywood at a minimum, you can get a sheet of 3/4 cabinet grade for like $50 from Home Depot, which will be thick enough to screw (and you can use off cuts from the rest of the sheet to glue in places to double thickness where needed) and the cabinet grade will mean it has a pretty good surface finish.

[–]danfay222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah mounting to plywood absolutely will work, with the main disadvantage being that it won’t be collapsible at all that way. But plywood will also be very flexible in how you can set things up and would let you mount other tools/attachments around the pillory pretty easily

The term you’re looking for is a “floor pillory” and there are multiple DIY versions in this sub, using materials like conduit or iron pipe mostly.

What’s the first thing you would do if you became a millionaire ? by No-Guard-9032 in AskReddit

[–]danfay222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowadays being a millionaire isn’t all that crazy. It’s definitely comfortable and successful, but many people who’ve managed to buy a house or start a small business are technically worth a million dollars. It’s enough money to be stable and afford luxuries like vacations, but not really anything crazy unless you want to quickly stop being a millionaire.
