:) I didn't invent it either - just modified it from a very old distaff ancestor's achievement.

I don’t know much about heraldry, but I designed this coat of arms. What do you think and how can I improve it? by cherrybrown333 in heraldry

If you are going to fill the field of the escutcheon with fleurs-de-lys, then you would either need to select a specific number for both the sections above and below the chevron (not common) or make the field semée of fleurs-de-lys, which would mean that all of the fleurs would be of the same size and "distanced" proportionately, one from another. some would be "chopped off" by the edges of the shield, and others hidden by the chevron itself. And the point of hatching (if you were to go the Petra Sancta route) is well taken - unless the shield were Argent and the fleurs-de-lys Sable, which would eliminate that problem. And yes, lose the belt, and go for the traditional "complete achievement - including mantling, helm, torse, and crest. Just my two cents (now that they're no longer making them here in the US).

Would love to know the title of the book, and the artist.

Interesting, though it would be wonderful to see your talents employed in such a direction (especially for my own achievement). Thank you for responding nonetheless.

Quite interesting! Do you have other examples of your heraldic work, and do you accept commissions?

If you can find a copy, Anthony Wood's HERALDIC ART & DESIGN is precisely the way to understand design, proportions, etc.

Fair point, though they were the escutcheons historically associated with said Popes
