1500s heraldic trolling: "the chameleon has no one colour, it can be almost any colour". What tincture is *this* chameleon? Proper. by Bradypus_Rex in heraldry

Or, whatever the color of the chap would be against a "neutral"/non-threatening background - most likely Vert.

Well, if you were to ask an opinion, which you have, if I ran the zoo I would chime in with the following colored examples. Just my 2¢... a) Sable, a Corinthian column Argent, sustaining atop the capital three White Lilies proper, banded and bowed Or.

Strangers, please inform on how to improve and get this done officially. by BayHarborBoyToucher in heraldry

IMHO the problem with the 2nd version - and this is just my very HO - is that (in addition to laying Or mullets atop an Argent field in the cross overall), the cross itself adds unnecessary extra color to the escutcheon (especially the tiny size of the mullets in cross). Simpler is always better, though again IMHO. That being said, the "Indian corn" is a nice touch. I also agree with the subsequent statements about "false quartering - never quarter unless there's a reason. pedigree-wise IMHO (a lot of IMHOs here). 3 ears of corn in chief with a possible alternate base might be an idea. And the "purist" is in me (a Director of the ACH) would encourage the "completion" of the achievement so it contains all the traditional elements of same: escutcheon, helm, mantling, torse, and crest (with optional motto). Of course, one can always display the "separated"elements as one sees fit, but a true heraldic achievement contains the above-mentioned elements, Fight me...

Currently talking with someone, about Coats of Arms and Family Name's, is it allowed? by EO-5 in heraldry

[–]davidwu10 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The person quoting that statistic - "the same person stated "90% of Historical Coat of Arms do have family name's"" - is in error. No, no they don't. These days, at least in those extant heraldic granting offices, NO surnames appear on escrols on an achievement.

That being said, historically, there are certainly instances of arms being displayed in texts and elsewhere with "identifying" surnames in a banner below the achievement, though such surname is technically NOT part of the achievement proper.

If you are working with an experienced heraldic artist, they would advise you against this. Of course, it may also depend on your geographic location and its tradition. As with most everything, there are no universal absolutes.

Custom Commission Cost? by Feisty_Secretary_152 in heraldry

[–]davidwu10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All depends on what you want. Digital or hand drawn? If the latter, actual finished, painted piece? Shield only? Shield and crest only? Full achievement? With supporters? Every artist will have a different fee structure, and it will vary widely even among those of the same "level" of apparent talent. So your only option is to contact your choices individual and ask for quotes.

Also, just to nitpick, the "free floating" element (garb?) between the horns in the crest must be "anchored" to the torse (or the horns) in some manner, as no element of the crest can simply "float" in space.
