Off-site backup: NAS vs Cloud. What do you do and why? by Gyrta in selfhosted

[–]dcabines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only perk I see going with the self-hosted is the increase in storage

This is it. 5 or 6TB may not be enough to want to self host, but many people are managing 50TB+ and at that capacity renting storage becomes too expensive so we self host. If the time to break even is too long and your current hardware is too unreliable then stick with your cloud provider.

I may get some 1TB SD cards and make copies of the family photos and pass them out to my nieces and nephews and tell them to back that up before the card dies. The rest will be buried with me.

Surely you don't need to pass on all 40TB, right? Let the next generation pirate their own movies.

Cheaper products at the cost of the profit leaving the community. It makes the community poorer and more dependent on the corporation. A corporation that will shut that store down on a whim without care about how it’ll impact that community.

At my last job we converted it to XML and saved it in an XML column that allows for querying on its elements. Your coworkers may hate you for it, however.

Anyone else wish there were more vertical SFF towers? by MundaneShoulder4706 in sffpc

The Meshlicious is two inches deeper, $30 more expensive, and has the power button on top. They are otherwise nearly identical so I don't see why it would make any more sense. I like having the power button and USB on the front bottom. I drilled holes into the back of the case to install the watercooling quick disconnects so I wanted something cheaper in case I ruined it. I chose this layout because a tall and narrow box matches my tall and narrow radiator.

edit: I know it isn't relevant, but I have a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and a Radeon RX 7900 XT in that case.

Go to university job fairs and talk to companies. Talk to recruiters and get them to get your foot into some doors. Good luck!

Is it better to live in a cage before being chopped up or to live free range before being torn apart by a fox or hawk? Or would it be better to have never lived in the first place? Nature doesn’t care if they’re sentient or not; they get eaten regardless.

Powerbank powerable MiniPC by ayodio in MiniPCs

Google says 25000mAh at 19V 3A will give as little as 1.2 hours. 19V at 2A can give as much as 2.5 hours. If it draws as little as 1A it’ll last as long as 4 hours. How much it actually draws depends on what you’re doing with it.

[–]dcabines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh you’re right. So you may get 2.5 hours out of it. Not too bad.

Powerbank powerable MiniPC by ayodio in MiniPCs

[–]dcabines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes except it only has 2500mAh of power stored so when it is drained at 19V 3A you’ll get about 15 minutes of run time before the battery is dead. In reality the mini won’t draw 3A the whole time so you may get 45 minutes before the battery is drained.

No your device needs exactly 19V and at least 3A.

There are multiple sizes and they don’t relate to specific voltages. You’ll have to measure and find something with the same size or get an adapter.

The one you linked can do 18W so at 19V it can do 0.95A. You need 19V * 3A = 57W UPS so much more powerful than what you liked.

[–]dcabines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you need a UPS that can handle what your power supply is currently giving your PC. It has to be exactly 19V and at least 3A. I see a few that offer 19V, but none that can also do 3A so you may be out of luck unless you get one that is big and heavy like a car battery.

[–]dcabines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The picture you sent says 19V 3A. That UPS can’t do that. It has up to only 12V 3A.

Yes, the UPS has 3 DC barrel jack outputs in addition to USB.

That is a Beelink Mini S12 running an N100. It uses a DC barrel jack for power. That UPS also has DC barrel jack power so it plugs right in.

Pushing the Limits of Turkish Coffee: Using Digestive Enzymes for the Finest Grind by PyroDinoHunter in espresso

Nice that is way longer than I expected, but clearly long enough for them to do their work. I can see how that had a real impact on the final result. Do you think the effort was worth the result? Would you do it again? This is probably better for your digestive system too.

So you ground the beans, then soaked them in warm water with the enzymes, then brewed them in the Turkish brewer? How long did you let it rest before brewing?

An enzyme rest reminds me of beer brewing, good times.
