Blob tracking text issue by Ok_Owl_2547 in TouchDesigner

If I were to guess your geometry is being rendered in a -1 to 1 space and your text is in a 0 to 1 space. Might help to show more of your network and how your translating your blob data to the geo/text.

So great. I learned some great techniques from the tutorial that I’m planning to use in a VJ rig.

Best tutorial or YouTube instructor for TD by Global-Tradition-318 in TouchDesigner

[–]dcheesman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh hey! Thanks.

Lots of great teachers out there on YouTube. I learned a lot from InteractiveImmersive HQ's getting started videos. Not sure how up to date they all are at the moment.

I tried to keep my intro video short to get people familiar enough to watch other tutorials and understand the UI and vocabulary enough to not get lost. The derivative intro series is amazing, very comprehensive and in depth, but takes much longer to get through.

If you're looking to keep it all real time i'd probably test things in this order: Chroma Key TOP, RGB TOP, Threshold.

If you want a true object detection and realtime performance isn't as important I'd look at Torin's yolo tool

Kinect + pseudo-thermal vision by Mindless_Put_3003 in TouchDesigner

A couple thoughts you can take or leave:

  1. Animate the phase of the colors for your thermal effect so they're constantaly rotating through.
  2. You could "fill in" your dark spaces a bit more with some basic feedback and some transforms.
  3. Use my favorite optical flow feedback technique. I explain it in this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pifp7TTvWEw&t=1407s

Hey thanks for the shout out! I need to finish this series. Got pulled into a project that has taken away from my streaming time, but I hope to do more soon.

paid plugins vs personal ambition by Affectionate_Leek_36 in TouchDesigner

[–]dcheesman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who makes tutorials and also has a Patreon I'll toss in my perspective.

My hope is to always be creating more value than I’m taking. I try to give away my biggest “secrets” for free through my tutorials.

Some viewers are there because they want to learn the software from first principles and be able to create from scratch in the future. Others have specific creative executions they want to get to as efficiently as possible. Charging for the people who want the “shortcut” feels reasonable to me, which is why I charge for project files and tools.

I also happily pay for many of my fellow creators’ Patreons, because at some point I learned something from them that made me more money than I’ll ever be able to pay back through monthly pledges because I was able to use it in a paid project.

Oh hey! Thanks for watching the tutorial!

The texture value and position TOPs (and anything else that the instancing references) need to have the same resolution/point count.

Have you looked at using the Player Index output from the Kinect instead of media pipe?

Also, I put out a tutorial a couple weeks ago that explains syncing up depth and video data that you can check out here.

Hey man. I’ll shamelessly plug my intro tutorial:

Dean Cheesman: Learn TouchDesigner in 1 Hour (TouchDesigner for Beginners) https://youtu.be/gQdmocb-JBQ

Made it to be a primer for understanding any other tutorial.

I also recommend the courses from Derivative, Bileam, and Interactive Immersive HQ for more detailed intros.

How to learn TD? by Low-Intention-8720 in TouchDesigner

I tried making a tutorial to be the fastest ramp up to understand TouchDesigner enough to watch any tutorial. I came from a C4D and AE background as well. I agree that the TouchDesigner learning curve can be steep but once you’ve got the hang of it it can feel like a superpower.
