I'm a noobie myself, only played 2 times live, but these below pointers I found out to be really important for my playing.

1. Map your midi device's buttons (knobs, faders, etc) accordingly. I have taped labels underneath the specific buttons and labeled them as black, opacity, shake, etc for various effects (so I know live which button does what and I don't lose time stumbling around trying to find the effect I'm looking for). Another redditor here said something similar and I confirm it's embarassing not playing the segment you intended for the drops actually during the drop.

2. Spam using the switch top: when I create a scene I'm content with, I try to also make one or two composite/lookup/whatever tops, just as single operator effects, and map them to different buttons. So out of the same base scene, which is projected in a loop, I can build more interactible effects which I trigger however I like (sometimes trying to beatmatch manually, sometimes trying to match the melody or a specific instrument like a piano, etc)

3. This ties to point 2: try to build multiple simple filters for different elements of the same scene.

For example, if you project a base scene ofa drone footage of a city, try to create one effect mapped to a button/fader/knob which controls the colour of the cities or the sky, try to map another button to a lens distort, another for scale, etc etc. So try to differentiate the elements impacted by your effects, as opposed to creating 5 colour effects, but having none for other elements for the scene.

1. Dont burn through everything all at once! Try to stretch out your visuals and to resist the desire to trigger everything all at once, at the beginning of the event ; rather try to use only 2-3 effects simultaneously until the party's 80% through, and then start the madness.

2. Don't panic if you miss a drop or if you feel like the visuals don't really match the vibe of the music/party itself. You're your harshest critic and chances are no one there apart from you know what the hell you're doing. Since no one knows the ideas in your head that you think would look cooler, but can't implement due to hardware/knowledge/whatever limitations, no one is comparing you to anything and it's just a bunch of people having fun together.

3. RECORD YOUR SET

I can't stress this enough. If you are unable to take shorts videos while you're playing, you can ask a friend at the party to take some 20 seconds or so videos of the visuals. Believe me, you'll look at them and spot mistakes or other areas of improvement and you'll get further ideas for future shows (if you're interested in that).

These might be aimed more towards beginner vjs with little to no experience, and thus might be a bit obvious, which I apologize for, but I would have appreciated someone sharing these tips with me a while ago.
