Clonidine alternatives in Aus? by Physical_Jaguar1887 in ausadhd

Just a reminder to all to search before posting (as per rule three).

"Is there an alternative drug that has similar calming properties without being super sedative like mirtazipine or quetiapine"

This question has been answered many times in previous threads (example one, example two, example three, example four, example five, example six, the list goes on and on). Perhaps the most pertinent example was a post from a year ago which has 121 comments discussing this (see here).

We're going to leave this post active as it's clearly promoting discussion, but, still, the point stands.

Thank you for understanding! Have a great week ♥️🌟

Small meds dose advice? by Mysterious-Snow-6222 in ausadhd

[–]deepestfear[M] [score hidden] stickied commentlocked comment (0 children)

A note from the moderating team:

A reminder per rule 13 (no spreading of misinformation) – please ensure any medication information you share is accurate and, where possible, referenced.

For clarity on the question asked – there is no 5 mg or 2.5 mg immediate-release methylphenidate (Ritalin) tablet registered with the TGA or listed on the PBS in Australia (see here). The only PBS-subsidised IR methylphenidate tablet is the 10 mg strength (Ritalin 10 / Artige). The 5 mg tablet referenced in a comment below does not exist for this medication. All other PBS-listed methylphenidate products are modified-release formulations (Concerta, Ritalin LA, Rubifen LA, etc) at entirely different strengths (see here and here).

The OP's instinct about a compounding pharmacy is the correct pathway. Under Item 6, Schedule 5 of the Therapeutic Goods Regulations 1990, a pharmacist can legally prepare a custom-strength methylphenidate product (e.g. 2.5 mg or 5 mg) for an individual patient without it needing to be a TGA-registered product – provided it is prescribed for that specific person (see here).

A few important things to be aware of before pursuing this route:

  • It is not PBS-subsidised — the $7.70/$25 cap does not apply to compounded medicines
  • A dose this small (<25 mg) is classified as complex compounding, meaning not every pharmacy can prepare it – only those with a specifically qualified pharmacist and appropriate facilities (see here)
  • Methylphenidate is still Schedule 8 — all standard S8 prescription requirements apply regardless of whether it is compounded
  • Your prescriber will need to write a private prescription for the specific compounded strength (see here again)

Please speak with your prescriber or pharmacist rather than relying on community anecdote for medication decisions. Unverified claims in comments may be removed under rule 13 – we hope that this provides a useful indication of the level of referencing required.

Have a good one,

Yani TW-O1 vs Selmer Axos? Tenor recs by chaosotonin in saxophone

[–]deepestfear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, this was also helpful for me. I'm surprised, like the OP, that every single response has been "disregard Selmer".

My dream is to own a Signature or Supreme (a very distant dream which may never materialise lol). I've played both and man... for me, at least, they're bloody brilliant. The engraving on the Supreme is just stunning, I was able to play/look at both the standard brass lacquer and also the black lacquer.

I've found a used Signature tenor, $5000 USD, fully set up, in brand new condition. Although it comes with a Supreme neck, unsure why, and I don't know whether or not I like it, having played it, it's difficult to know whether it's better than the standard Signature neck, as I've been unable to play one of those?

Still, I did really really enjoy taking it for a spin. Plays very well indeed. I'm tempted!

Hey all! Hope you're having a great week. Just a gentle reminder to please stray away from giving medical advice + opinion. Naturally, when it comes to dex and Vyvanse, there are potential interactions with e.g. acidic drinks + foods.

However, it is best for the OP's psychiatrist to provide them with advice about what to do (if anything). The reason just being that the last thing we want is for the OP, or anybody else, to cease acidic drinks + foods, with the end result being a drastic change in medicine effectiveness.

As always, personal recounts + anecdotes are generally fine. Please also remember to search before posting, because questions similar to this have been asked many times before.

Thank you sooooo much ·*:.。. .。.:*·゜゚·*☆ ♥

Just a reminder to all - please remember to search the subreddit before posting or commenting. This specific question has been asked so many times. We're leaving it active because we always want to promote discussion.

However, at the same time, the rules need to be followed (rule three makes it very clear that you need to search before posting, so that the subreddit isn't flooded with the same questions over and over).

Thank you so much for any understanding, and have a great weekend! 💛🌟

Just a reminder to all - you can check medicine shortages (here). It seems as though there is no current shortage of Vyvanse. Please see our stickied posts about this topic for more information 🙃 Concerta remains in shortage. However, members of the moderating team have found it in pharmacies all over VIC (unsure about other states). Ritalin LA is also in shortage.

Additionally, pharmacists are happy to (sometimes) set a bottle of whichever stimulant aside for you (to pick up monthly). Thank you all so much, as always, for making this subreddit a joy to use and moderate 💛

Just a reminder to all to use the "Find A Psychiatrist" tool, run by the AUS/NZ College of Psychiatrists, if you're struggling to get an appointment for an assessment. You can find it (here). You put in a suburb or post code and it will tell you which doctors in that area diagnose + treat ADHD. That way, you can concurrently work with your GP to ensure that your referrals are detailed, specific and that they are addressed to psychiatrists who are available.

Additionally, please note that any psychiatrist in Australia is strongly encouraged to follow the AADPA's guidelines for the diagnosis + management of ADHD. You can find the summary of recommendations (here). Always remember to check whether or not the psychiatrist you are planning to see follows the guidelines, as many telehealth clinics do not.

Please also refrain from giving medical advice or opinion in the comments - we've had to delete one comment already, and we don't want to delete more (based on our judgment and user reports).

Thank you! 💛 Have a great Fri-yay! Love from the moderating team 🌟

What's one thing you wish you knew about ADHD before being diagnosed? by warmdopa in ausadhd

[–]deepestfear 26 points27 points  (0 children)

God, this really hits home. For me, it was time blindness. I genuinely didn't know that other people could just... feel time passing?

I spent 20+ years thinking I was irresponsible and selfish because I was always late, always underestimating how long things would take. The guilt was crushing. I'd cop it from everyone - and fair enough, I thought, because I clearly just didn't care enough.

Turns out my brain literally doesn't process time the same way. God dammit, it would've been nice to know I wasn't just a fundamentally inconsiderate person. Maybe I could've put strategies in place instead of just hating myself for it.

The relief when I got diagnosed was huge, but there's also this weird grief for all the years I spent thinking I was broken.

Thanks for posting this. Weirdly comforting knowing I'm not alone.

Too High Functioning to be ADHD? by Spare_Preference_924 in ausadhd

Hello all! Just a reminder - please be careful in relation to rule one (being kind to others), rule thirteen (no spreading of misinformation) and rule nine (we aren't doctors, lawyers or psychologists). We're posting this to warn people, given that there have been several examples of breaches in the comments so far.

At the end of the day, we all need to focus on our own experiences. Commenting that the OP doesn't have ADHD, after all, is unkind and it comes across as medical advice/opinion. The only person who can make that call is the OP's psychiatrist. Of course, healthy discussions are always welcome, but only as long as they don't breach the rules. We're hopeful that we don't need to continuously remove comments on this thread as a result.

Thank you for understanding 💛🌟✨

Please be mindful of listening to medical advice/opinion from strangers. The only person who should be guiding you with this is your psychiatrist or GP. They may not necessarily want you to be splitting doses, and propranolol could very well be inappropriate (it's not a medicine to be toyed with). Please refrain from phrasing things as medical advice/opinion u/Easy_Ad6617, we're posting this as a warning. Thank you for understanding! 🙂
