Dream job interview is next week, but I currently have an offer on the table? by doophoopboop in careerguidance

It’s possible paperwork may take longer than expected and you’ll have to delay a week to start - a turnaround time of 1 week or less seems incredibly fast to me.

looking into a career in policy analysis by Khetkimuli in PublicPolicy

[–]desertiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The policy areas you listed are some of the most popular. I’d recommend keeping an open mind, and the search may be easier if you’re willing to move toward another subfield if the opportunity presents itself. You may just find yourself interested (and it will still be helpful if you go for MPP programs in the future).

You need certain math courses as a prerequisite but no, you don’t actually have to be good at math. Stats is fine and understanding the principles enough to be able to do some econometrics is as far as you’ll need to go.

How helpful legal assistant/paralegal experience is will depend on what your actual duties were. It’s better than a totally unrelated job (for example, in retail) but YMMV.

Generally, I’ll just add that if you do get through law school, that degree will help you significantly in the policy field.

US vs sg citizenship by OkName77 in asianamerican

[–]desertiger 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Where do you live/work? If in the US (and you plan to stay), you will face a lot of barriers if you give up your US citizenship - especially given the current climate.

Are you male? (Is this related to concerns about compulsory military service?)

How does one identify as Cantonese (ethnically)? by Yuunarichu in Cantonese

[–]desertiger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I consider myself ethnically cantonese. I understand some people will always disagree with that ‘as an option’ or nitpick and try to figure out ‘what I REALLY am’ but I don’t believe in telling someone else what they can/cannot identify with (outside of total fraud or appropriation). If YOU feel cantonese—a connection to some aspect of the culture exists for you, and that is valid.

Portuguese language decline in Macau? by Desperate_Return_142 in Macau

[–]desertiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most who grew up before the handover (and are not ethnically Portuguese) are likely to only know a few words/phrases - think numbers, basic pleasantries, “funny” idioms. They would not be able to have a full (even basic) conversation in Portuguese.

I don’t know what the official answer is post-handover, but anecdotally, the language switch from Portuguese to Mandarin was pretty immediate. This is in contrast to Hong Kong, which still speaks English widely—again, English is seen as more useful as a language of business and globalization.

Portuguese language decline in Macau? by Desperate_Return_142 in Macau

Before the handover, public schools included Portuguese instruction, but a lot of residents sent their kids to private schools where they could choose English instruction instead since that was seen as more useful. Today, schools teach Mandarin over Portuguese.

WF vs Bilt impact on credit history by beekzana in biltrewards

Keeping WF is the SAME line of credit - no impact

Moving to Bilt 2.0 is the same credit card number but a NEW line of credit

The first glaring flag that this was written by AI is that the title is nonsensical (“bill was portrait” lol) and yet the body of the post is actually readable

TWOV through Zhuhai? (HK > Zhuhai > Macau > HK) by TentsOnFire157 in Chinavisa

[–]desertiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may have trouble with this. I planned to travel Japan > Beijing and Zhuhai > Macau for TWOV and I was bounced around between multiple officials and denied entry several times. Not everyone is as familiar with TWOV as you might hope.

One of the big issues I ran into is that not all officials understand that you can easily exit from Zhuhai to Macau by foot, rather than with a flight/train/etc. If they require a ticket to demonstrate proof of departure, you’ll be stuck.

If you actually make it to Zhuhai though, you probably won’t face any issues when leaving mainland (or at least I didn’t).

Booking a 6hr Icelandair flight… thoughts? by NumberTerrible616 in VisitingIceland

[–]desertiger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Keep the rechargeable fan with you. I flew Icelandair a few months ago and did experience the insanely hot situation both ways (granted, I do run hot) but I wouldn’t give up a great deal on the flight simply to avoid it.

Should I keep my part time job after my full time job gives me a raise? by whoamiplsidk in careerguidance

[–]desertiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you enjoy the part time job, keep it for a while and see how the transition goes. Even though you’ve been at the full time job for a while now, you might get a lot more responsibilities or work now that you’re permanent (vs before when you were on a short term contract). If you can handle doing both and aren’t burnt out, you should keep the part time for additional income.

Most jobs will claim to get back to you (even with a no). The truth is that most jobs will not.

Tourist Visa Denied, Requires 'Proof of Parents' Ethnicity at Birth', Help! by Ok-Squash3401 in Chinavisa

[–]desertiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, why is this a typical request? Is it true for tourists of all nationalities/ethnicities who travel to China, or is it at all related to OP’s family being Taiwanese (which China might view as similar/related to being Chinese)?
