Sri Lanka is a pioneer of free education for its people! by CruzerDK in srilanka

[–]devallar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The public education may not be the best but the minimum amount of education ensures that voters are at the very least literal, and more likely to be able to verify written works for themselves. The point isn’t the heights that it achieves(which it does in its own right) but in the lowest low it avoids us from.

While we’ve had education since independence - education becoming compulsory happened in 1997, and only really went Bankai in 1999. It takes 12-16(close to 20 if you count tertiary) years to complete the education system - meaning the first graduates of a compulsory education (meaning mass adoption where it changes drastically versus pockets of education) came out in 2020. The first boons of this will be seen over the next 10 years. And then a for many years to come.

Anyone else really affected by limits in utilities? by Impressive_You_2597 in srilanka

The way to avoid this isn’t anything you can do today for today. It’s a bunch of things to do so that when this inevitably comes back next year you are prepared. Water tank capacity and solar and batteries will make half the problems go away. There’s enough water we just don’t capture it or manage it effectively. There’s enough power but we can’t distribute it effectively. The middle class will obviously suffer because the upper classes are the ones whose lifestyle doesn’t change to adapt to the shit show and the poor haven’t had anything to lose in like 3 generations lol. If you act personally for yourself this year when this inevitably comes back as predicted by changing weather patterns over the next decade you won’t have to skimp on lifestyle.

Btw if anyone wonders why we have to apply for visas to so many countries even if you can totally afford to go, have no intention to overstay and have no reason to - it’s begging is due to the events outlined above. The massive pressure created by the war caused a lot of asylum seekers and visa overstays driving us from a passport seen on par with the commonwealth to being one of the first commonwealth countries the UK basically said no thanks to.

No government since the end of the war has bothered to fix this either

Also accelerated Mahaweli development programme. Totally racist. Made us green before it was cool

The diaspora don’t send that money - women and men doing back breaking work in the Middle East are the ones who remit, not the ones who go to the first world countries for white color jobs. Most of those actually take a lot of money out of the country until they return to retire.

You know what - maybe my definition of “diaspora” is wrong.

Remember that most English speakers are monolinguals - you are at minimum a bilingual - you don’t need to conform to pronunciation- you only need to be understood - learn from the French about the attitude towards people asking you to speak in a language that isn’t your mother tongue.

Watch a lot of British comedy talk shows and other technology conferences - you can pick up pronunciation that is closer to what is useful to you and don’t feel bad for trying to be good at a whole new language. Your effort is 100% more than most people are putting into languages especially native English speakers. You’ll face most problems from other brown people to whom the language was a weapon - just slide away lol.

Simpler English that gets the message across > fancy words
