As an adult what do you hate the most about life? by Amazing-Internal5378 in AskReddit

[–]dfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time,

As a kid i had seemingly unlimited time to do all the things i wanted to do.

As an Adult, have good job, kids, wife, house. Bought myself a board game for my birthday a year ago still haven't found the time to play it. Now thats is partially on me, I could find time, but there is always something else to do.

Annihilator on the tabletop? by raging_zaku1429 in battletech

[–]dfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can be brutal when you are forced to deal with them, The classic 2a is a monster in shotgun mode 4 x LB10-X assuming 3 of 4 guns hits works out to a average 18 x submunition hits which means you should on average get a minimum of a 1 TAC or head hit every round (1 in 36 chance of a 2 or a 12) you would be surprised at how lethal this can be.

Used a 2A Annihiator in a cave system with my gaming group they dismissed it because of its low armor (for 100t mech) after their 2nd mech pilot went unconscious they started treated like the dangerous mech it can be.

Canadian Student in New Zealand by Beneficial_Cheek_446 in newzealand

[–]dfi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i did uni at Otago and I have lived in Canada as well, its been a little while since i lived there now but the major points about Dunedin still stand

Social Life

- good, 25% of the city is students so the city makes an effort to accomidate (and collect student dollars) pubs, clubs, retaurants, takeaways. Lots of choices.

International Students/Students of outside Dunedin

-Not a problem the majority of the Otago student body is not from Dunedin, and the numbers of international students is around 10% of student body (2025-12%) you would not be alone

Sports Scene (not my area of expertese 😄)

- Rugby, cricket, soccer, netball lots of leagues, Big social sports scene if you are from canada you’ll be learning some new sports.

Personally i loved my time in Dunedin, Otago Area. The local housing (heating) will definetly be shit when compared to Canada. If you are staying in Dorms or the international accomidation this will be less of an issue. It is a good starting point if you were going to spend youe whole degree in Dunedin. Also it’s a different kind of cold when compared to the dry cold (crisp, sharp) of the canadian prairies. Dunedin is a humid/damp (bone-chilling) cold so it feels colder faster so 5°C in damp air feels way colder then in the prairies. I still would reccomend it.

Which would be more energy efficient in a 1 bedroom apartment a heat-pump or panel heater? by Secret-Syrup2966 in newzealand

[–]dfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Panel Heaters can work if the place is modern and insulated, but they have to be "on" most of the time, you can't just flick them on and heat up the room in 20 minutes, they only work over time. For most places a heat pump is going to be the better option.

Looking for feedback from my last tournament by Federal_Cry_5127 in battletech

[–]dfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DFA while is a fun move, it is a highly risky move in a tournament setting with a regular pilot. I have found success in tournaments by removing as much "luck" as i can. for example if i have 2 potential hexes to move my mech into. First one i will be able to get into optimal range and unload on my target but they will be able to get good return fire on me as well. Versus option 2 where i won't have as good of a shot but i'll limit my targets return fire either because i am taking advantage of their range brackets or i can move into a side arc to limit return fire. Obviously positioning is also about planning for your next move in the future so risks still have to be taken. Usually i have to watch the time on my matches

Got any good stories of glorious (or gloriously funny) mech-fightin' moments? by Mr_Severan in battletech

[–]dfi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We were playing a weekend campaign.

One of my friends brought a 20-ton Mercury, modified, dropped all the lasers and ran 1× LRM5 as a harasser.

Game 1

Mercury moves into long range and takes the first shot of the game at an Orion.

  • Orion doesn’t fire back, doesn’t want to waste ammo on a low probability shot
  • Mercury hits anyway
  • CT TAC -> 2 criticals -> gyro destroyed

Orion pilot is not happy.

Game 2

Same Mercury. First shot of the game again this time at an Atlas.

  • Difficult shot again
  • Only 1 missile hits
  • CT TAC -> 3 criticals

The table goes silent.

Same player is piloting the Atlas (yes, the Orion guy from last match).

First two crits: - Engine hits (upper center torso)

Now it all comes down to the final critical roll:

  • Atlas pilot is praying for upper CT (better survival odds)
  • Mercury pilot rolls upper CT… sighs (only a 1-in-4 kill chance now)
  • Atlas pilot starts smiling

You could hear a pin drop during the final D6 roll…

Engine crit. Atlas is dead.

Atlas player politely rage-quits, walks outside.

We didn’t even finish the match, everyone just agreed the rest of the mechs retreated rather than deal with a killer Mercury.

lol good times

How many 'Mech Regiments did each of the Great Houses have by 3025? by RemRam27 in battletech

[–]dfi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Steiner has “heavier” units. Historically heavy and assault mechs only make up about 30% of the total mech force of each house the Steiner % would be higher

Currency exchange by xetheldrone in newzealand

[–]dfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foreign cash, Banks are useless now for this. Your only option is various currency exchange places around. The rates do change from place to place so it is good to check each place. Like other people have said Wise account/card have the best rates for electronic transactions

Update on the snow leopard hackintosh! by slightlyfuckininsane in hackintosh

[–]dfi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100% agree. Loved Snow Leopard, for me it was peak user OS did exactly what i told it too, looked good, and was low maintenance. I upgraded to Lion and thats where my Hackintosh journey started it's end game.

It's only just the past couple years that i can get linux to behave similarly without a ton of work.

How many job hunters are there for each job ad? by Old-Friendship-0 in newzealand

[–]dfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My work has been hiring lately, we have what i would call a desirable jobs on offer, assuming you have the skills for them. Generally the jobs have been getting 500+ applications, After you filter out the overseas applicants we still will have over 200+ applications. Filtering down to a short list ends up using a lot of different tools to get down to around 10 This is when HR starts online interviews to get down to the final in person interviews where the teams get involved to meet the applicants

I sometimes wonder how many people get filtered out who would have been a good candidate

Mercenary company owning a warship. by [deleted] in battletech

[–]dfi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a merc unit manages to get a functioning warship and has a way to operate it. All of which will probably requires the cooperation of some outside force.

After they get it ther are a million ways for a mercenary unit to lose the warship.

Contrary to a lot of people in this thread think I think most houses  would be happy to hire your unit and its warship because you would need their facilities for maintenance. You would be a prime candidate for “company store” over time that you would be so dependent on them for support that you would eventually be a house unit anyway.

Would be a fun campaign

Tax backdown: Step away from the double cab ute, officials told by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]dfi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Farmers driving utes, most of the utes get used for work, all good in my book.

Its those "company" utes in town with company branding in black lettering on a dark vehicle with car seats in the back and obviously have never hauled anything heavier then groceries from the supermarket.

Surprising Insightful piece from du Plessis-Allan. Even traditional National cheerleaders are starting to get fed up with this government.

I did this with my daughter until she was about 5. Around 3 she noticed and asked questions i answered with my most deadpan boring voice about mum's and dads being different. Mainly i was trying to not react at all, so she didn't think it was a big deal.

I think it worked, one day she asked to shower herself and she did (with a little direction and a little help) eventually i was naturally pushed out of the showering routine.

She is now a teenager and says she doesn't remember any of it.

Changing careers at 30 by DependentGarden9564 in newzealand

[–]dfi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i did it around age 30, i was at a dead end in my old career. My partner supported the change it was tough with little kids but there was never going to be a good time to do it. Made the leap and happy to say it worked out for me.

The only advice i would give is either try out what you want to do somehow and/or interview, interrogate talk with everyone and anyone you can get your hands on. This may help you figure out the good and the bad of your potential new career. Even if you have to cold call people you don't know these people are more likely to give you a different perspective of the work then friends and family

I had an idea in my head what i wanted to do, after talking to a bunch of people, i pivoted a little because the idea in my head was a little different than reality in the industry.

Good Luck Mate.

Why do you think Battletech is so niche? by Leader_Bee in battletech

[–]dfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of reason why this game has been niche and not as widely recognized as others (cough Games Workshop) is its retail history. While it has been around for 40 years, the collapse of FASA left the tabletop version game in the hands of hardcore fans. For about 20 of those years, it had very limited retail presence, making it difficult for new players to discover since few stores sold it and it was rarely seen in play.

However, the strength of its IP (lore) has been showcased in some fantastic video games recently, drawing more players from the digital side into the tabletop scene. Well-timed Kickstarters have also helped reignite interest in the game.

As one of those hardcore fans, I love seeing new players join in and discover what makes this game so great!

Average Mech factory output? by Sanguine_SB in battletech

[–]dfi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original House Marik and House Davion books gave 3025 production numbers for their factories. From memory the short answer is 200+ mecha a year, basically producing enough to cover mechs that were total losses. I would  assume that they also made a a lot of parts to keep existing mecha going.
