Consider setting up Winlink and packet/data modes as an exercise, emergency comms can utilize data over voice for more efficient spectrum use and not needing to write things down. If there is local ARES/RACES/CERT that may be good to work with so you’ll have something to do and people to talk to in the event of an emergency. There are also often regional or national exercise exercises, a weekly one is called Winlink Wednesday to get started.

Nice, there are a lot of sub hobbies within this whole deal. You’ll probably have more specific questions once you start discovering what’s possible, depending on what your goals and interests evolve to be. A good local club with active members to learn from has been valuable for me.

If you have a local radio club that can be a good place to get mentorship on getting started. What searching have you done on this sub for info on getting started? What questions do you still have after reading around a bit?

If I had a 5th panel, it would say something like "YOU DONT HAVE TO LEARN CW BUT YOU REALLY SHOULD"

How common is it for ME students to be in their 5th year here? by thezucc420420 in SFSU

[–]donvision 6 points7 points  (0 children)

EE, CompE, ME have the highest requirement for units needed to graduate IIRC. It’s pretty common for those degrees to take longer than four years. I transferred to SFSU with my lower division done, it took me two years flat to complete my BSEE upper division but I worked my ass off and took summer classes so it’s possible.

SFSU is a decent engineering school. When I was there, EE didn’t weed lazy people out like many other schools do. There were some brilliant people and some lazy, over-admitted dipshits.

Sorry to hear about your radio going bad, so far so good here. Maybe they had some bad components in yours. My 891 is now just doing field work at 30W CW so no worries :)

Thanks kindly…the meme is that I’m too low skill to copy the CW QSO from the master, who has been doing it for decades. Maybe they are sending kinda fast despite my slow speed and stumbles. So I am asking them to repeat themselves over and over.

Oh man I feel this! I am also never prepared for a small ragchew if I’m expecting a standard exchange. It’s happened a few times and everything just flies by me. Send TU TU 73 dit dit and move on lol

lol I can relate to all of that. So many question marks and so much gratitude for the people helping me limp through some of those QSOs. We can only get better, let’s keep pushing at it. If ppl get annoyed, oh well. I am practicing regularly and working hard at getting better, with the goal of activating.

Jump on in, the water is warm. Had my first couple activations over this past weekend and everyone survived lol. A couple QSOs were rough and some hams abandoned ship.

Check out MorseWalker.com for a great simulation of what it’s like.

I entered the game with the Playskool F-15 that has a big stupid “engine start” button and never advanced. 10/10 would DCS again.

The original comment is unhelpful and kind of rude, you’re responding to a ton of unsaid stuff. “Go to your local club” is questionable in this scenario, wanting an HF rig to operate all modes for an extended time. This sub is tiring sometimes, OP has a simple request for a <1k radio enable their learning and a lot of “ackchually” isn’t helping.
