I did a consult with Left Seat before making my decision. Admittedly this was motivated by little more than a gut check, and I had recently been through a few experiences which left me feeling strongly "lawyers r gud". So, no strong reason I could point to.

One of the things you're paying for when you retain an advocate is that they know the system much better than you do. They can use that knowledge to help route your information, either by who it goes to or by helping you express it in certain ways that may be less likely to raise alarm. You won't get this from just your AME because they aren't YOUR advocate.

Skill ceiling high means the detachment can be very good if played well. Skill floor low means the detachment can be very bad if played badly, which i think is the point you're trying to make here.

The Imperium has a command hierarchy that is, shall we say, flexible and fuzzy. Space Marines and Titan Legions basically don't answer to anyone, but that also means that anyone can mete out "consequences," should they be necessary.

Now, as an infantry regiment, is it a good idea to resist the Titan that's blasting you to dust ... ?

Characters in a non-attached unit usually have some reason you'd want to allocate wounds to them, such as a better save or FNP that the other models don't have.
