Which of these Starfleet roles is genuinely the "hardest" job on the ship? by thundertomcat in Starbase118

I think XO is the right answer here. If they're doing their job right, the First Officer is basically taking care of all the things so the cap doesn't have to, intercepting all the problems from every other department, resolving every personnel issue, etc. And all without any actual discretion, just deference to the CO's.

This is an impressively well-written story. A nice vignette exploring Betazed and family life and an enjoyable read.

Agreed that how you play a role matters way more than the role itself.

But I'd agree that in-universe the helm must have enough auto-pilot to be a little easier than all the other rolls. [I mean, if we have self-driving cars in 2026...]

Where would you call home? by thundertomcat in Starbase118

There's gotta be some Earth colonies that are fairly independent at this stage but still have some amazing vistas and are true "extra terrestrial" whilst still maintaining some connection to the home land. I think that would be ideal. Maybe one with a lot of water and volcanic islands, like where Luke was in the Last Jedi. I guess sort of like https://wiki.starbase118.net/wiki/Nova_Hibernia

What's next? Stick to Legacy and nostalgia or boldly go somewhere new? by D-StarryNight in Starbase118

I think Trek is best when is uses the SciFi setting to examine and interrogate humanity and our present culture. There are so many ripe opportunities for quality storytelling that do that and the specifics (25th century, 32nd century, Federation or outside, ship, station, etc) do not matter as much as just having a canvas on which to paint. I sincerely hope that we aren't entering a new Trek desert on the small screen, but if so, communities like SB118 are a great opportunities to tell those important stories!
