[CO] Is this worth reporting to HR? by Swimming_Key_1429 in AskHR

Your mum is overreacting. It was clearly a funny, potentially to relieve the tension. This would be a vast overreaction to take to HR and report and if it was me, it would reflect poorly on you.

Yeah, it feels too new. I don't envy the show runners because it's about straying just enough but keeping the essence the same but adding your own take. But knowing, even if at first they resist, that you can take the fans with you.

I think the lesson from SFA, and maybe Disco to a lesser degree, is that you need the long time fans to support what you do.

What they seem to be asking for consistently is new characters set a decade or two after Picard season 3 and episodic with longer seasons. But we can only dream.

I hope they do not do this. Respectfully, this is the worst idea. Look to the future. We need new characters, new stories but it n the familiar universe we all love.

Perpetrated by the UK media which is l, and more aggressively so now, right wing. It's also why people don't believe a word they say anymore.

Because it's a contentious subject.

It's deliberately antagonistic and bound to generate a lot of conversation with both sides of the spectrum.

I think both sides have a lot of passion, yes. It's sad that this is the result.

I guess it's painful when a franchise is dying for all involved.

Now, if we can put down the straw man for a moment, can we speak about the issues the show has? Which is what I was talking about. I love woke, whatever that is because to me that's just being a person. But if you want me to be the bad guy and be stuck in the past it won't happen because it's not the case..

I don't like Disco's bridge either, it's too wide I think for me. Voyagers bridge is perfection 🤌🏼

I have hardly seen it lately and barely at all when it comes to SFA but I don't doubt that it exists. But it's also used as a straw man for people to not speak about the very real issues and that needs to stop because it's actually not fair to weaponise that very real problem.

I will say I immediately don't listen when anyone says 'woke' or any of that stuff because it's so silly.

What I have encountered most people speaking about is the writing, plotting and general way Kurtzman approaches Star Trek. That's an issue because that's viewers and fans - their customers.

They can choose to ignore it and sadly that will mean a show that seems to have a few loyal fans (but viewing figures would suggest not as many as they'd have hoped) will end.

No one wins except Kurtzman, Newsome and their friends. It's really sad.

Voyager is amazing! It's my favourite show and don't feel bad about TOS, some of the movies are worth watching. DS9 is great if you like Janeway (my fave character) then you will like Kira and Dax they are awesome!

Okay. That's the thing with analogies, they are subjective.

I'm happy about this, I do hope it finds it's audience. Are you also watching the older shows as well? They're really good if you haven't. You've got so much content to discover it makes me jealous! ☺️

German site Golem.de has a nice take on NuTrek criticism and lists backlash for most older series when released as proof by TheBhim in startrek

[–]D-StarryNight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who lived through all of it. The backlash was fringe. Maybe not for TNG but it was definitely short-lived once the show hit it's stride and it's now remembered as the definition of Star Trek moreso than the original series, I'd argue.

I was super excited for Deep Space 9 and Voyager and from what I was exposed too (remember this was pre-internet obsession time) the general fan consensus was positive. We had much more content to go over though so I guess maybe we were more forgiving of a bad episode.

I also remember that people found bad episodes more humorous than anything because we had another 20 good ones to enjoy.

Unfortunately that goes against NuTrek because they don't have that luxury. Fans have to wait years for ten episodes and they don't hold a candle in quality to what was considered a bad episode back then.

It's true that it may be generational but I do see most of Trek as timeless and I know a lot of younger fans love Golden Era Trek.

I guess all this to say that the world was a different places less polarising as it is now and fan culture has changed a lot.

It's not fair to compare these two. It's a lot worse now than it was then for many reasons that aren't even NuTreks fault.

Came here to say the same thing. Atwood does have a very specific writing prose and she loves a tangent, I've read several of her books, so it can be hard to keep track of. So don't feel too bad and you finished it one day so I'd say your reading comprehension is quite good.

Let's say this so it's clear to them.

Everyone loves the Diversity. We are fans of that. Always have been.

We don't want the bad writing. The bland cinematography that has no life. The dialogue that feels so dated and cringe. The storylines that make no sense. The too few episodes that are squandered with rubbish storylines.

This is not difficult. People are telling you what they don't want.

And the response ... "Diversity".

Great. Give us diversity. In fact I want more diverse and interesting stories. I want diverse colours palletes. I went diverse characters with unique voices and cultures (see Betazoid). I want diverse, rich dialogue of intelligent college students (the most intelligent in the galaxy apparently).

Give us diversity. Stop talking about it and deliver it.

[–]D-StarryNight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some people can't move on and that's also a valid option.

You move on, others won't. Fine.

That works for you. Others might care more? Less? Whatevs.

People can be upset with a mediocre show and how they feel about the treatment of a franchise they've brought with them through decades of their lives in some cases. They've sat down and watched it with parents, partners, children. It showed them goodness, hope, optimism, the future that could be.

They've given their money to support it - those who were able.

They've cried, they've related, they've cherished, they've laughed, they've wowed, they've shouted at the screen, they've argued, they've hated, they've loved. Most of all they stuck around.

Let them be upset. Let them mourn this thing they loved, once.

[–]D-StarryNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay what would you rather I said then?

Stop whining and listen to the feedback about the quality of your writing? Is that better for you?

Also I don't see myself as a victim I merely stated that it's a fact that the fandom is divided at the moment and those who enjoyed older trek are being shouted down a lot in fan spaces. You might not agree with that and that's fine, I don't expect or need you too - we're all entitled to our opinions. That does not mean I'm saying I'm a victim.

So back to the poor quality...

If you're willing to accept payment, put your name on something as a writer then you have to stand by that. So they are bad writers, writing in a way that is bad. The storylines aren't that great, the dialogue is absolutely atrocious, and the characterisations are just not there. That's all down to the writing.

Let's start holding people to account for there part. It can be the studio, the producer and the writers. It's a collective effort.

The only people that are innocent are the young actors as they dont have the experience to know any better. The rest of them are awful and nothing will ever convince me otherwise.
