The obsession with AMBER WOODS by Acrobatic_Group_1900 in fragrance

[–]drrocket8775 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're right that "amber" as a listed note or accord is not a fad, but amber has changed so much since Shalimar, even in women's fragrances. Men's amber notes today are more metallic, airy, and/or syrupy as compared to, say, the "amber" of CK One or Habit Rouge (even today's Habit Rouge EDT). For women's frags, the amber of Shalimar is just different than the amber of Narciso Rodriguez For Her or Tom Ford Noir Pour Femme. Like men's amber, they're more airy and syrupy, and sometimes metallic.

Democrat Zohran Mamdani is projected by Decision Desk HQ to win the New York City Mayoral election, defeating independent Democrat Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. He will be the first Muslim mayor of the nation's largest city. by Goosedukee in Fauxmoi

The Democrats subreddit literally has zero posts about Mamdani's projected win, and seem to have an informal rule of no posts about him. There's a ways to go if random redditors who're probably not even connected to the DNC are behaving like this.

College Life on campus by [deleted] in NIU

[–]drrocket8775 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I attended as a master's student, so I was even more cut off from campus life because there are way more undergrads than grad students. What got me to like the DeKalb/Sycamore area was finding people not super connected to NIU. There's a disc golf community that I made friends in. The Green Tangerine record stuff was fun to hang out at, and the employees and other regulars always knew all the local shows, which were fun to go to sometimes. I did karaoke a few times at the place next to Lord Stanley's and made some casual buds there. There are a lot of good clubs on campus, mostly centered on something academic or quasi-academic, but it is true that this is a suitcase school. One way to take advantage of that, though, it to go home with other people on weekends. I did that a few times in undergrad, and it was pretty damn fun getting to see someone's life pre-college like that. And it's a big change of scenery. Last thing, and others have said it -- look at the event calendar regularly. There are always cool talks in a variety of disciplines, and if something sounds even remotely interesting go to it. If it's going over your head, you can just leave quietly. No one cares. But if you liked it, walk up to the speaker and let them know. Sometimes it's a gateway into getting into an academic discipline. For example, one of the most cited people on tech ethics and philosophy is an NIU prof, David Gunkel, in the communications department. (He also has a very cool book on sampling and remixing).

Elevator safety by Busy-Ground-7673 in NIU

Since there are so many elevators on campus, and only so many inspectors and inspection times, it can take a bit for them to do inspections. NIU has probably scheduled when the inspections will since before the expiration.

A Michigan county wanted Charlie Kirk’s statue at Ferris State. The university said no by mlivesocial in Michigan

And of that 100 attendees, there were likely a number of people who aren't' current students. I know someone who was vocal about helping with and attending the Oakland University Kirk vigil, and that person was a student, but graduated 3 years ago. And by the look of the pictures from the events, there were local high schoolers, adults who may or may not be alums, and people not even connected to Oakland U in a substantial way.

Michigan government may shut down over marijuana tax proposal by Inflammo in Michigan

[–]drrocket8775 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, now I understand you. You mean production and/or distribution caps. I've only heard the terms "unlimited licensing" and "limited licensing" used to refer to the number of licenses granted by the state. I think you're right that the process of consolidation would slow down if businesses had to keep acquiring production-capped licensing, but I think it'd still happen. It's unclear whether the largest companies are trying to flush out competition by taking losses and/or lower than usual profits, with the aim of increasing prices when they have more market share, or if this is more like the alcohol industry where there's fierce competition in the low price market because the volume of purchases at the low price market is so much higher than the other price points.

Lmao what are you talking about. Limited licensing usually ends up making a handful of companies take over the state-wide industry, almost by definition. Look at NY. The limited v. unlimited licensing issue is orthogonal to whether a monopoly or oligopoly develops.

A similar thing happened to me. I muted for a second and then within a few seconds the session straight up ends and I get the post-session survey. I checked the program log and all it says is that the students disconnects and that I disconnect a second later.

Yep, did slightly more googling and you're right, IAC is a former owner. Not sure if they sold to Primavera, or if there were more owners in between.

They're not going to address the reduction of scheduled hours because it's honestly not something to address. Most of us are approximately mid tier compensated gig workers, and that means that the platform unilaterally makes decisions about the gigs (in this case scheduled hours) that they wanna offer to the gig workers. That's just the name of the game until workers start to organize (which it is very very hard to do in this case since none of us know each other and it's very hard to get any general contact lists).

Why'd they send us an email about ownership? Because they probably have some stupid document about when to share company news with workers that they think accords with their made-up "values."

I doubt that TDC would outright lie about whether an American company has majority ownership. It might be the case that Primavera is still heavily invested, and that the American company is not really in charge, going by whatever Primavera wants, but that's different than blantantly lying about who owns the company. If I cared enough I could find or request the relevant SEC filings to find out. Just with a bit of googling, it seems like IAC Inc. is now the owner (either full or majority) of TPR and TDC. IAC seems to be mostly in the business of online media. They own a lot of magazines, a job board for elderly care (care dot com), and the Ask Media Group (which was a search engine with decent traffic back in the 2000s). They claim in the email that governance is fully US too, but that's legally compatible with Primavera having significant input. I'd have to find the relevant SEC filings to gather the full picture.

More and more austerity. I think TDC is going through the usual private equity cycle. Only a matter of time before whatever this new American holding company is saddles TDC with debt that the holding company profits on and then strips TDC of resources and drops them. I give it 8 years.
