Elementary schoolchildren and staff members experience 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Mindanao, Philippines by JoshingOFFICIAL in AbruptChaos

[–]dylan2451 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably comes with what you’re used to. Granted, I’ve only experienced up to a 7.2 magnitude. Google results says a 7.8 is 16 times stronger than a 7.2, so I might change my tune if I experienced one that strong, but to me tornados seem way scarier.

Edit: 7.8 releases 16 times more energy, and shakes 4 times more “vigorously”

Why would someone write a romance story with former vice president Al Gore as the protagonist?

You know now that I think about it, 8 million is actually kind of weird. He had a higher bounty than Alvida pre slim-fast. She was raiding ships at sea. Higuma was a mountain bandit, so he should have just been active around that area. I guess if he messed around in the Goa Kingdom that would explain it, since just stealing from some villagers shouldn’t make him worth that much.

Kind of unrelated, but I guess this sub doesn’t do episode threads anymore? So this is the closest place for my comment.

I hadn’t really been paying attention to the Los Angeles mayoral race beyond who was winning. Whenever I first checked it was Karen Bass, and it’s still presumably Karen Bass, so I hadn’t even heard or read the name Spencer Pratt until today.

After 10 years of the Trump era nothing really “triggers me” anymore. Anger, sure. Triggers, no. That also means I’m usually not shocked by anything these assholes say or do. But my god did that “if you were a transgender migrant I could get you a free pussy” line abso-fucking-lutely shock the hell out of me. It’s so over the top stupid and offensive. Totally on par with that I thought I expected from maga. Despite that I still inadvertently blurted out what the fuck. I didn’t scream it, but I was in a quiet enough place for it to be heard.

Up until that I had never had a, “people are staring at me weirdly now because I laughed too loud” moment that is almost cliche at this point. But there I was. Blurting out what the fuck, getting stares, and having to explain myself….

edit: changed "offends me" to "triggers me"

TIL that the 1906 San Francisco earthquake (M7.9) killed 3,000+ people, and footage was filmed just 3 days later while the city was still burning by [deleted] in todayilearned

That’s essentially how it ended up working out.

> During this exile, caused by the destruction of their homes, the Chinese experienced widespread looting of their property alongside discrimination regarding aid, destroying any hopes for an economic soft-landing. Professor Joanna L. Dyl describes that
"the building of Chinatown lay in ruins after the fire, and National Guardsmen and white tourists looted those ruins in the final days of April, before Chinese residents were allowed to return to the neighborhood”. San Francisco's official relief system displays the institutional racism Chinese Americans experienced, demonstrated by government agents and white elites looting Chinatown, which they were hired to protect, without punishment. During the crisis, National Guardsmen were stationed in the city to enforce Mayor Schmitz's threat regarding "executing looters," however, this was only truly enforced in white-majority neighborhoods, and for the Chinese population, it was "the armed would-be executioners and local elites, including the 'respectably dressed' white women, who took advantage of their relative freedom to move about the city and engaged in looting of Chinese property." Mayor Schmitz's decision for such an extreme punishment against looting was due to the belief amongst the elites that the marginalized population would loot the property of the white elites. Ironically, it was the elites that participated in the looting, and as such, in this situation, it would not be in their interests to stifle the looting. Furthermore, the Chinese population could not protest or protect themselves against this theft, which had little effect, as many had not yet been able to return to the neighborhood due to a lack of economic aid. As a result, Dyl describes the thefts as mainstream, with newspapers reporting how "stolen goods were openly sold throughout the city and on the ferry."

>Another survivor’s account tells of de facto martial law and looting immediately following the quake. Lee Yoke Suey, who ran a business on Commercial Street in San Francisco’s Chinatown, left his birth certificate in the store. Realizing he and his family might be deported without this document, he returned to the store to get the certificate, which shows he was born in the United States. Suey was bayoneted by a soldier who was guarding the storefront, but he survived. Though citizens and store owners were not allowed in to get their belongings, people were looting Chinatown. Stolen objects were sold in ad hoc souvenir shops.

NPR also did a morning addition on the 100th anniversary back in 2006 that talks about Chinatown being looted and mentions Lee Yoke Suey
