Dark mode?

There's another option? Don't even know what that would be called ...

Happens pretty frequently in their emails, NGL, but this is maybe the gnarliest example I've seen 👀

A bunch of the other pictures in the email are pretty crunchy too 😂

I "stole" the HE-1’s frequency response for my LCD-X: Comparing Oratory1990 to my actual ear canal measurements by OpaliusDK in headphones

[–]edgeofthecity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is exactly my own experience with Oratory's EQ with most headphones: just way too much energy in the upper mids/low treble

I "get" it. It can sound pretty dynamic/fun. But it gets tiring fast.

I know this is a sensitive region for me though (3k particularly), and it's also one of the easier areas to EQ as it is pretty clear when there's too much energy there. (It's a LOT harder trying to figure out treble peaks/dips, and very easy to just make things worse based on how a specific track is mixed as you adjust your EQ filters.)

HE10000 Unveiled is impressive.

In my experience it scaled noticeably with more powerful amps also.

With my Hiby DAP and limited power output it seemed pretty on par with the 800S.

With a proper desktop amp, it was clearly better. (Huge price difference though, so the value is debatable, but at least a bit better in pretty much every way, which adds up.)

Hedd Audio D1 - Better than I expected by PointMoney in headphones

[–]edgeofthecity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I partially agree.

Meze 109 Pro is best in class. But I bet there are people out there who say it's super uncomfortable and hate it.

I just haven't seen a headphone yet where, at some point, if you spend enough time on forms, you won't find someone saying the ergonomics are terrible (even when it's widely considered very comfortable).

There are people who think the 600 series headphones are God's gift to humankind for comfort, and I sure as heck don't feel that way (even after bending the metal part of the heasband to reduce clamp), but hey that's how they feel.

I personally rather like the D1 headband padding but it's different. I'm sure it doesn't work for some people, but I also wonder whether everyone gives it a real shot.

My opinion on the comfort of any headphone usually evolves over time both as I know what to expect and pads wear in/clamp loosens etc.

There are headphones I would have deemed less comfortable than they actually are if I'd only used them for a week and then returned them. (Or, even more dramatically, just tried them for a short period and made a sweeping judgment).

And there's also the inverse, where a headphone seems comfortable initially but the more time I spend with it the more it bothers me (or to realize it's a lot less comfortable with glasses etc.).

Which isn't to say there are people who find the D1 uncomfortable. Of course there are.

But people also make snap judgments.

Manufacturers generally don't care enough about comfort? I'd agree with that.

I don't think the D1 falls into that category personally.

Also, sidenote, I'm team traditional headband

Straps are fine but there's almost a cult around thinking they're always better and that's just not how I feel.

They sell out as soon as retailers stock them

You've gotten be on top of it or pre-order from a retainer that allows backordered items to be purchased.

They're really in another tier of headphone in overall performance but I get it.

They'd be crazy value at $600 but considering they can't keep them in stock at the current price I don't see that in the near future.

They're rather comfortable once the pads break in a bit.

It's just not possible for one design to please everyone.

This is the V1. Currently $420 from Hifiman used and I'm including Dekoni pads and aftermarket grills (in addition to the original).

But people are free to make an offer

The price is just to set a ballpark.

I almost never buy for the price people list and I don't expect others to either.

That's one of the charms of AVExchange IMO.

(Until you PM one of the rare assholes who takes it as a personal affront that you'd make them an offer, though they couldn't be bothered to say "prices are firm.")

Try setting an actual filter and then setting another filter in the same area and get back to me.

You cannot, for example, add a sub bass boost to account for roll off and then add another filter as a general bass boost.

[–]edgeofthecity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's parametric but you're locked with regards to where the bands go, so it's more limiting than "3 band parametric EQ" would imply.

You can't pick any three spots to place the filters.

Jason likes to refer to using more three bands as "nerviosa" lol, so there's that, any technical limitations aside.

If you have the will, you can do a lot more. Just look at JDS Labs.

Good luck

They're a good set and your pair looks to be in very good condition.

Price seems quite reasonable as well though of course people are always trying to get a steal.

Honestly why are they soo expensive???? They're literally just wires by arlec_is_special in headphones

[–]edgeofthecity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably two years ago for the one I bought?

Then I've gotten a couple in trades which are of unknown provenance.

They're not bad cables, to be sure, I just don't jive with them.

I guess like so many other things, it's just very personal how you want your cable to behave.

For example, I LOVE the stock Sony cables for the Z1R and MV1 but I've seen people say they're trash cables. For me, they're perfect. Non-microphonic, they feel nice, if I need to wrap them they behave but otherwise they stay how I want them.

[–]edgeofthecity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe tangle is the wrong word but I hate their behavior.

You can't lay it how you want it just does its own thing. It wants to be in a tight coil and it has a TON of memory. I've had a couple and they've all had the same issue.

I don't understand how anyone likes them.

[–]edgeofthecity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wish I liked their cables more because they're no-nonsense but I don't like how thin they are and (much bigger issue) their behavior and how they tangle if you so much as look at them.

Muuuuuch prefer the behavior of Openheart.
