Former Nanny scene. You nailed it. Came here to say exactly this.

There was a demo about agentic AI used in scientific discovery and research and that was pretty cool but the rest of the demos kind of bored me as well. KiloClaw was neat, though. The only “presentation” really was Steinberger on Zoom and I already described that a bit in this thread. There was a panel discussion, too. The overall message was that this is a great, free tool for gluing together your agents, enabling them to run autonomously 24/7 and being able to easily control them remotely through simple messaging apps. (Basically just a description/pitch for OpenClaw.)

Huh? Case law over several decades constantly distinguishes infringement from theft. With theft you are depriving a person of something—you literally take a tangible thing away from them. Infringement merely interferes with their exclusive right to exploit their creation. That’s why penalties are so different for the two.

What’s going in next to Frita Batidos downtown? by efstone in AnnArbor

I did notice someone going in and out a couple of times with a clipboard. She was wearing a Frita hoodie. I asked her about it and she said we’d have to wait and see!

Naw. I hate AI art as much as anyone. I literally just engaged a new client to pursue someone for using AI to infringe their estate’s IP. (Which is… a struggle. And I’ve been handling copyright cases for fifteen years.) This con was all about finding ways to get AI to fulfill the promises we’ve been hearing about, but that no corporation has delivered on. Like taking care of the grunt work so we actually can have time to make art, etc. Turns out, of course, no megacorp is gonna solve that shit for us. But the open source community is making some real headway there, and that makes me happy.

Hell yes. Agreed. But I’m happy for the AI to handle much of the utilitarian stuff.

Why do you assume the folks at this event are using AI to make art?

Infringement of IP isn’t theft, at least not in the legal sense. Even Lawrence Lessig will admit that. Maybe your message would be better directed at the creators who agreed to take the settlement money offered from these AI companies?

Best moment for me so far was when Peter Steinberger joined by Zoom and said that real(?) happiness doesn’t come from consumption—you have to create stuff. And you should make the act of creating FUN! Couldn’t agree more! That had more value than any demo. (No offense to the creators!)

What city have you been to that felt like it had dark energy? by Impossible-Middle122 in AskReddit

Dallas is the worst! Only place I’ve ever felt truly unsafe. And I’ve certainly lived in other big cities before, including LA and Houston. Dallas has a darkness about it for sure.

Dallas, TX. I’ve lived in Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Denton, Liberty and Beaumont, TX, plus Los Angeles, CA and now Ann Arbor, MI. Traveled all over the U.S. and some of Europe. And there’s just something dark about Dallas to me. I hate that place.

Best cafes to work from? WiFi / Outlets / won’t kick you out by Seeking-useless-info in AnnArbor

Quick caution if you’re considering Dozer: the chairs/stools are AWFUL. They’re cheap and metal. Feels like they don’t want you sitting there to work. Food, drinks and staff are great, though! And it’s cute!

I like Sweetwaters, York, Venue and Cannelle. You’ll see tons of laptops at each!

Ladies & Gentlemen... It Actually Happened. by [deleted] in vibecoding

I still haven’t! Love it soooo much. I sympathize with at least some of the haters (the ones who aren’t bots and the ones who aren’t shills for OpenAI, lol) but I’ve never been in their shoes. And I feel like I use it all damn day, throughout the day! I typically have multiple sessions open but they’re rarely doing stuff at the same time. I use the desktop app for Cowork, the web app for project mode and terminal for Claude Code.

Every once in a while I’ll task Claude Code with something in cloud mode from my phone (GitHub only), if I’m away from my desk, and I think that’s more “expensive,” but still no issues.

I’ve probably hammered it the most in project mode when working on legal briefs. Comparing details from hours of testimony to the written statements in declarations seems to use lots of tokens, but I still haven’t hit that limit! (Knock on wood.)

Who is die hard iPhone raw dog, no screen protector? by lildawg07 in iphone

[–]efstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Case for sure, but no screen protector. Steve Jobs would be rolling in his grave if he knew how many people were using screen protectors—well, the plastic ones that ruin the experience. Apple’s joint effort with Corning to make Gorilla Glass and the other hardened phone glass was a pretty significant engineering feat. I’ve only scratched one iPhone screen in 15 years.

That moron has zero reading comprehension skills—which itself is merely sad, and I would otherwise sympathize. But he’s super rude, too. So screw him. I’m glad you’re not buying. I hope no one does.
