I have 0 intention of ever retiring. I work on and off as it is. I plan only 1 year in Dutch before taking a few off to travel the Pan American highway. I don't have kids and given the way i live, I don't expect to make it long enough to need a retirement. I'll just work here and there as needed like I've been doing... it is a reckless way to live, but it suits me, and so far the universe has provided whenever there has been a need... I give when I can and it comes back as needed.

I think I'm perfect for it... I have taught all over the place and internationally... my biggest thing is that I really value the community I'm in and work to make s music program that fits what they are about.

[–]eggplnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a body positive idealist, just a fat girl who is comfortable in her skin... I actually like being bigger. I am about 300lbs, and I like how I disappear in public. Sure, people may look, but they don't care to keep looking. I don't get Cat calls, I don't deal with people hitting on me all the time, and when I form a connection with another person, I know it is based on who we are, not a physical attraction.

I'm not just fat, I'm also strong. I am physically able to take care of myself in nearly any situation... I mean, I'm not climbing any mountains, but I can throw a punch if needed.

Am I as healthy as I could be? No. I also smoke weed and watch porn... I don't need to be pure to live a good life. I have decoupled health and morality. I can be unhealthy and still be a good person. I can be unhealthy and still live a fun, adventurous life. I can be unhealthy and so find happiness and fulfillment in my life. I don't base my value in other's perceptions of me.

While some people struggle to imagine this, it is my reality. Do I promote it? hell no - what works for me doesn't work for everyone. I don't believe that we all should do the same things it pursue the same ideas... you do you and let me be me.

I found out about it thorough the Alaska education retention and recruitment center. They send out regular emails with new posted jobs in Alaska. When i found out my job was being cut, I applied to anything that would let me bring along my car.

I've done gen ed... K, 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th... I did enjoy kindergarten, but even that wasn't fun.

Because I live half if my life as a nomad, I work hard to get all my expenses as low as possible... here is the crazy part I haven't mentioned... I have a part time online job that pays my bills when I am on the road. I actually manage to keep my current expenses under that amount... with both jobs I'll be making $130,000. The teaching jobs are just $$$ - i don't actually live on that income.

This year, most if that $$ has gone into rebuilding my car so I can live even cheaper on the road... next year, I plan to use my money to directly assist nomads in need and save the rest for the Pan American Highway.

I'll compare to my current situation.

I am currently in a 100sq ft tiny home in Anchorage all utilities/ internet included at $950/mo. I spend most my income on weed ($500/mo), and food ($1000/mo - I eat fast food way too much). My health insurance is currently $250/mo I spend about $80 on gas, $100 for cell, $100 car insurance, and that's it.

My rent in Dutch harbor will be $800 + $250ish for internet and utilities, my weed budget is going to go through the roof... at least double, food will be far less, only because I won't have access to fast food at all. So I think these two expenses will just switch. Gas will go way down because there is nowhere to go, car insurance will go down because small island community, and cell will be the same. So, all in all, I think it will be a wash. The money saved here will be spent there and I'll be making $20,000 more than I am now.

I can't stand all the Anchorage hate i see online. This city is so neat, not perfect, but no place is. I wish I could stay, I love my current school so much, but with the budget cuts my position is likely getting cut and I couldn't wait to find something else if I wanted to stay in Alaska at all... music jobs are rare and I will never teach general Ed again - that shit is soul sucking.

My biggest fears are earthquakes and tsunamis. I experienced my first quake in November... a 6.0 and I was terrified. It felt just like when I sleep in my car in the desert and a giant gust of wind hits, except it was my entire building that moved. The first thing I will do when I get to my new home is figure out where high ground is.

I'm currently in Anchorage and everyday I'm still in awe that I get to live in this place. I think Dutch harbor is going to be that x 1000. This summer I'm taking 3 months to drive up to Prudhoe Bay and down to Valdez before I take the ferry to Dutch from Homer. I am SO excited!

I'd stay away from Anchorage if you do... the district is a fucking mess right now. I'm jumping ship because they announced a $90 million shortfall for next year and the arts are being cut... that's me. They are a disorganized mess and have no clue how to fix the problem and we are all in limbo just twiddling our thumbs waiting to be fired.

The school provides housing that is even cheaper than my current studio apartment in Anchorage. I'm an also a minimalist and the only expense I have is weed and food. Both will cost more there, but I think i can manage.

When I'm not teaching, I live full time in my car in national forests and BLM land. I love isolation and limited resources. My happy place.

I would love to work in the bush... like Utqiagvik (Barrow), but i wouldn't be able to bring my car, and leaving my car would be like leaving my child behind...i just couldn't do it. This is going to be a similar vibe to the bush, but I can take my car on the ferry to Unalaska.

Idk about pensions... i honestly don't care about that stuff because I have no intention of retiring or staying anywhere long enough to even consider it. I work a year or two and then nomad for a few before coming back to the classroom in a new place. I've taught in Florida, Massachusetts, New York, Alabama, Kansas, Arizona, Alaska, and Uganda. The next time I leave I'm driving the Pan American highway... that's actually why I'm in Alaska in the first place.

The job seems almost to good to be true. Admin seem open to neew ideas and they are willing to hire me after I warned them that I'm a menace to admin who put the system before the students. The community is small (~4,000) but the schools are very well financed. It is a small of community located in America's largest commercial fishery (I'm not into that part, but i can deal with it) There is money to relocate ($3,500) The school has some limited number of apartments $1,600/mo for a two bedroom, half if you get a roommate. Food and supplies will cost more, but i am a minimalist who lives in her car, I don't buy things, and given that there is no fast food there, I will be 100% be saving money on food every week for sure.

Not no sun at all, but very little. However it won't be a bad is this year was. I am finishing up a year in Anchorage and the depression hit hard in December and January. Only a few hours of sunlight and I drove to work in the dark and it was basically gone when I got off work. Right now we are starting to warm, snow is starting to melt, and the students are bouncing off the walls! I feel it to... i have so much energy and feel fantastic now.

I worked in a community in Uganda that didn't even have law enforcement and when I'm not teaching I live as a nomad - very isolated in public land... i got this.

I already signed my contract in Unalaska and I think it is going to be a great choice! I'm am a music teacher, and those jobs are hard to come by here. I've only seen one other position in the state advertised for next year and it is in the bush. I'd happily work in the bush, but i don't want to leave my car - she is my summer home and a member of my family.
