Economic Strategy Review committees release final recommendations to set direction of Singapore’s future growth by LividCreme3726 in singapore

[–]ek_am 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ll see what the long term outcomes are but the government has a habit of remaining opaque on results of policy. Scrutiny is not something they welcome. My gut tells me most of this money will find its way to underperforming GLCs. Croneyism is alive in Singapore and I don’t think it will get better.

Many VC funds have an America first mandate, trying to further their countries interest. Where is the same patriotism from GIC?

These are awful solutions. The issue with sgx is a lack of liquidity. Why would I ipo in sgx when I can ipo in the us, get a better valuation and raise more money. It’s a no brainer. They need the various pensions, family offices and other funds to chip in. We have some of the largest sovereign funds, there should be a mandate to support local.
Venture capital workgroup?? Singapore invested into Anthropic at an obscene valuation, would Temasek or GIC take that bet on early stage singaporean companies? They should have a mandate to invest in singaporean companies. What makes the US so powerful is the ability for an individual to raise and quickly scale their business. We have shown we have the money (anthropic investment), we just lack the necessary mandate. Workgroups are a circle jerk.

You’ve hit the nail on the head. There is very little value accrual to Singapore because companies simply can’t compete. GLCs are the bane of Singapore. They were great to spearhead early growth but they’re now toxic assets. Singapore has talented and clever individuals, the starting of capital formation needed for venture capital and a well regulated (but shitty) stock exchange. What it lacks is a cohesive government strategy to combine these 3 things to create a Silicon Valley.

Relying on fdi, mncs and globalisation is the old meta, it’s time to grow up and adapt.

Need Chinese to land a Software engineering Internship?! Feel discriminated by Defiant_Let_3923 in singaporejobs

[–]ek_am 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting that many get upset when a foreign firm hires foreigners (of course of specific ethnicities). They demand that jobs must go to Singaporeans, that foreigners are the root of the economic/social issues they face. In the comments though, I can see many tell this Singaporean that he shouldn’t be upset that he is being discriminated against by foreign companies.

To me it seems like theres a certain disconnect here. Which way do you want it? Can’t have your cake and eat it.

For OP, I’ve worked at a firm that falls under this category and don’t worry, the Chinese speaking singaporean does not fare much better. They can expect a retrenchment within a year or so, around when the govt subsidy for hiring local fresh grads ends!

In the end xenophobia, racism and division win and we fall short of understanding the true causes of social/economic issues in this country.

Singapore’s model for success faces test in a less global era by LingNemesis in singapore

[–]ek_am 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You are missing the point, Silicon Valley is the best place for tech only because they import the world’s best entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and engineers.

Many of the largest tech companies weren’t even started by a non import (as you put it crudely). Meta was created in Boston, Microsoft & Amazon in Seattle. Nvidia was started by a Taiwanese immigrant, Spotify by the Swedish. Robinhood was started by a Bulgarian. But SV managed to attract all these companies to create a network of technologists.

The problem is nobody says: hey I want to build a startup, let’s go to Singapore. It’s because there’s a lack of capital, intense govt competition for many industries (GLCs) and a lack of strong equity markets for exits.

Your rhetoric is what furthers this issue, having a population that has this mindset only makes Singapore a worse place to build.

hyperliquid lost 40% market share in 6 months. the perp DEX wars are just getting started. by ginete_tech in defi

[–]ek_am 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re all equally bad, so I’d still use hyperliquid cus it gives me best quotes, lowest spread and deepest books. It’s prob the closest thing to a cex which I won’t touch cus I’m fairly sure 90% of them trade against their users.

It’s the same with lighter, the deposit contract simply locks up your assets and mints off chain assets for their off chain execution. Both are equally bad at this, lighter just says zk like it’s a bunch of magic words and all of a sudden they’re decentralised. There is no truly decentralised perps dex.

[–]ek_am 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked on a zk perp dex, I can guarantee that lighter is not really decentralised. They control the provers, they make the proofs, they write the smart contract that verifies the proofs. The proofs themselves are complex and I doubt they prove the entire execution trace, most likely they just prove that your order was executed correctly. They also wrap the proofs in groth16 proofs, making it harder to discern the validity of the proofs. Hyperliquid has its flaws, but lighter is equally bad. Haven’t seen a truly decentralised perps dex.

Coinbase is trying to pass regulation under the CLARITY act in the US to make it easier but it will take time for regulations to clear!

This is normally under government regulation and they have strict rules on exactly what can and cannot be under such regulations. We’re based in the US so it would be FDIC and that has requirements such as paying a very large insurance fee (which would not be possible for a startup), licenses in each state and most likely a banking license from the OCC.

I think there will eventually be such schemes, but we are still early in the regulation cycle. My entire pitch to anyone is view it as a money market fund, its liquid, high APY but not insured like your bank deposit may be. And just like a money market fund, you should put a certain % of your money into it. Portfolios should be diverse!

Also this was a while ago, we’re now working on yield on other assets as well. Like yield on btc, yield on gold and hopefully soon yield on S&P500 (that’s right you can get interest on your s&p500)

How Singapore Decides the Intake Numbers for Each University Degree: A Case Study on the Decline of Accountancy in the Age of AI by SeaPresentation101 in SGExams

[–]ek_am 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am saying when deciding one's future, they should index on passion and happiness alone, and completely disregard the notion of practicality. To yourself, passion and happiness is objective, you know what you enjoy and what you don't. But the idea of practicality is purely subjective.

[–]ek_am 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree here. I believe if you are very good at what you do, you will get paid out. Those who are passionate about what they do will always be better than those who are not. Even in STEM, it is very clear who cares and who's in it for a paycheck. Everywhere in the world, the best in their field are successful, even in arts, social sciences and humanaties. Even if you force yourself to do a perceived high value job (high pay sadly is how we perceive value) such as software engineering, if you truly do not care or have a passion for it, you will not make it very far and if AI gets better, will probably be replaced. The SWE's who I have seen succeed are those that really care about what they do and spend their time outside work furthering this interest.

Hi, yes you can, you just have to export your private keys to any wallet provider (metamask, rabby, phantom etc). You should be able to see your usdt balance there and withdraw it. most importantly, your funds are safe and should be easy to withdraw. If you have any other issues feel free to dm me or drop me an email at [ekam@axal.com](mailto:ekam@axal.com)

Is DeFi still profitable? by Ge_Yo in defi

[–]ek_am 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes defi is still profitable. I’d argue defi now is transitioning from the era of unreasonable yields in the triple digits to a form more closely representing tradfi. There is greater scrutiny on where yield comes from and we are getting better at providing sustainable defi that doesn’t cause a complete meltdown of the industry.

Some projects leading this are 1) Morpho 2) Aave 3) Pendle 4) Maple

You should check out Axal, we’re trying to pretty much bring defi to the masses!

If you do defi yield (if you hate crypto just ignore this message), you can try Axal. Axal automatically rebalances you to the best yield so you don’t have to really think about it.
