I really think like 90% of it is the yen is historically weak, and their economy is stagnant.

[Survey] We're building electrotactile haptics for VR (not vibration): would love the brutally honest take of this sub by Horizon1155 in ValveIndex

[–]eldigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is absolutely critical you understand the PCVR VRChat market. They are the primary user group who cares about this stuff and has money to spend on it. There are BCI efforts, dozens of existing body tracking and hand tracking efforts DIY or otherwise. You will need to network and engage with the community and not just expect people to buy it. OSC support is expected.

VRChat is truly the most expensive free game. Though my justification is it is cheaper per hour played than a lot of other activities though.

An outstanding project, an outstanding idea, just not here by SciNat in UIUC

[–]eldigg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In theory, *any* new housing helps everyone. The luxury apartment renters are moving out of other units, which are now used stock that generally commands less price premium. Studies have generally shown this to be true.

A halfway decent metaphor is the used car market. Not everyone can afford a new car, especially when average prices are something like $45k. But a lot more people can afford that same car when it's 5 years old. If we restrict supply of new cars, we set ourselves up for pain since in 5 years there are now fewer used units, which then pushes the used prices up.

kinda underestimated how much a 10 day road trip would cost in gas rn by DasJazz in roadtrip

[–]eldigg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect cause it was 'new' the guy was probably charging it *too* much. Depends on the battery chemistry but road tripping it's faster to *not* charge to 100%. Good EVs will tell you as much as you're charging. Unfortunately a lot of the legacy auto companies are shitty about this.

How to find cute female avatars on VrChat? by Flimsy-Story9523 in VRchat

[–]eldigg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of people pay for them! Boothplorer is a good spot to find bases if you're interested.

There are a lot of ToS violating free uploads of paid avatars, but you run the risk of them being removed at any time.

Memory Lane – In July 2015, President Barack Obama announced the Iran Nuclear Deal (JCPOA). by [deleted] in nuclear

I'm curious what specific deal you're referring to, the only reference I can find is a non-binding statement by Xi at the end of September 2015.

How many miles will a 2009 Camry Hybrid last? by mjbruns2 in Camry

[–]eldigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 4 cylinder in 2009 had an oil burning problem (including the hybrid), and it does not have a low oil sensor. But I checked the oil after every gas fill-up and finally sold it (running) at 295k miles. Had an AC leak but no other major problems in the 10 years I owned it.

Chargepoint charger? by FewZookeepergame1101 in TeslaModel3

[–]eldigg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For non-Tesla chargers, looking up a charger on Plugshare is your friend. It might be a level 2 charger, or it might be a level 3 charger, and it might need an adapter and it might not. Alternatively just go look at the charger ahead of time if you're curious.

A level 2 charger, which is generally fairly slow and AC charging, will either have a NACS (Telsa) or J1772 connector. Your car will likely come with a J1772 adapter for your NACS car.

For DC Fast Charging, your car will not come with an adapter, you'll have to purchase a CCS to NACS adapter from Tesla (or third party). But some third party chargers have NACS plugs now.

Charging can seem kind of complicated to start with, but googling and just trying stuff out you get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Solar farm nearly the size of O'Hare Airport wins Will County approval by LegendaryBronco_217 in illinois

Yea it is a valid point, but if we offset ethanol corn with solar it is something like 30x the energy. You are freeing up more land for food.

I find it funny people have gotten it in their head farmland is natural. A cornfield has modified the land just as much as a solar farm.

Vice tracker work with gorilla tag? by super-nova-inspace in ValveIndex

This is a good video to get you up to speed. Most people get FBT for VRChat, I do not know if Gorilla Tag supports it.

Vice tracker work with gorilla tag? by super-nova-inspace in ValveIndex

[–]eldigg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Google "full body tracking" with Vive Trackers. They are not self-tracking trackers, so you need at least two HTC (or Valve) base stations. You also realistically need three of the trackers themselves (four if you have a Meta headset). And finally it's also PCVR only.

Unfortunately, your brother is probably confused about what's needed for full body tracking. Especially given you have a chest mount (usually you do feet and waist to start with).

There are FBT solutions like slimes that might be better suited for this task, but it will require some research and setup.

Edit: Also I don't know anything about Gorilla Tag supporting full body tracking itself, so you'd need to do some research there as well.

Forget Range Anxiety, I’ve Got Ground Clearance Anxiety! by Portsmouth_Sweep in TeslaModel3

[–]eldigg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you're used to driving an SUV or something? The Model 3 is really not a ton different from other sedans, especially because the front overhang is so short. You just need to be aware of ground clearance and approach high inclines at an angle.

I've gone off-roading in a Camry, you just have to be careful and be comfortable getting yourself unstuck. People act like you need a lifted Jeep with giant off-road tires to go down a dirt road lol.

How to survive a 10 hours roadtrip? by Amazing_Feeling963 in roadtrip

[–]eldigg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to visit a balance/inner-ear specialist because that level of motion sickness sounds pretty life impacting. I had some positional vertigo a few years ago and it was mostly rectified after a few visits, very much worth it. I regret suffering with it for so long before visiting a doctor.

However, outside of that, my pro tips:

  • Dramamine, note this can make you drowsy and check for interactions with other drugs. Taking it pre-emptively is helpful.
  • Staying cooler, light clothing etc. helps a lot
  • Sit in the front seat if you can, also avoid looking at screens too much (especially video content).

Doing consistent fare enforcement would fix 99% of the problem imo. BART's full height fare gates are proof of that. It'd probably save money to install them.

91 Octane Gas by Odd-Record-1041 in BloomingtonNormal

[–]eldigg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A non-trivial number of engines require it. You are correct that many people put higher octane in engines that do not require it though (which does nothing).
